MLPForums -- IRC Channel?

Hello, Everypony;

 

I noticed the chat window everyone over 5 posts can use here, and I even tried chatting in it for a while. But, I had an idea to add upon the chat window -- how about a MLPForums IRC channel, possibly in Freenode, EFNET, or somewhere quite popular? I'm sure there are a decent amount of IRC users around these parts of the internet, and I would be more than happy to help set one up and draft a few ChanBots for it (of course, leaving mods/admins in control of them).

 

This is just an idea, sorry if it were discussed before; from what I've seen, it hadn't been. What are your opinions?

It's not a bad idea, but IMO we should be throwing admin's work into trash by doing it.

I'm fine with the Skype group and the Chatroom.

i don't see too much of a need for it considering we have the chat room and skype group for that. Besides, the IRC may be an invitation for people that aren't members to spam and not be so SFW. The chatroom is pretty safe for that and aside from the occasional sick joke has no bad content. An irc could bring people from other internet pony boards in that aren't so friendly.

 

So really i don't think we need it.

Meh most ponies here agree that the Forums chat room is sufficient enough.

 

I'm not saying your idea is bad, its just we don't need another chat room at this time!

The thing with an IRC channel would be that people wouldn't need accounts to get in.

people could easily troll and not use their forum account.

Not to mention its just another chat room to moderate, after the synchtube, the normal chat room, skype and I guess the TF2 server would count...oh yeah and the actual forums.

This is too convoluted I feel, Chat Room, Skype AND an IRC Channel. That's just too much.

 

I think we are fine for now.

This is MLP Forums, not MLP Chatroom. Considering that we've almost been forced to shut down one of our existing chatrooms, there is absolutely no reason to add another one. The IP.Chat room and Skype group may not have bots and wicked features like IRC rooms do, but they're really easy to use (especially the IPC room - all you do is click and you're in) and easier to control.

 

What exactly would an IRC channel add to MLP Forums as a community?

 

Currently, we have the following official chatrooms or areas with chat functionality:

• IP.Chat room (on-site)
• Skype group
• Steam group
• Synchtube channel

I think that's plenty enough ways to chat with other forumites here.
