Nobody took the Trump campaign seriously, and the Clinton campaign made several key mistakes.

  1. Calling Trump supporters "deplorables." This is her "47%" moment. Here's a tip. If you're going to try to get people to vote, NEVER insult the other side! Romney's comment about the 47% helped decide the election, and her comment ignited a sleeping giant.
  2. Taking the Rust Belt states for granted. The Clinton campaign assumed they had Michigan and Wisconsin in the bag. They didn't. And when they realized it, it was too late. Trump's campaign persisted in getting his message out to the Rust Belt and made late stops in these battleground states. When you work overtime there, you imply to them you care.
  3. She took the young voters for granted. What was the theme of this whole cycle? Washington needs to change the status quo. Like it or not, Clinton resembled more of the same, and it's not hard to see why. Bernie Sanders ignited the young vote because he wasn't afraid to admit that this country should do better, and he was the best candidate out of everyone out there. Young voters have every reason to be apathetic against Washington.
  4. Taking Independents, the largest voting block, for granted. If you're going to try to get people to vote, you must get Independents to vote for you. Trump convinced Independents to vote for him. Even with his blatant nationalism, his message resonated with them. Clinton didn't do that.
  5. Her skeletons were exposed. What she didn't wasn't criminal or illegal, but the fact that her email security was that damn poor tells people she's detached from modern technology and has trouble with security. In turn, this implies she can't keep America safe.
  6. "It's the economy, stupid." Trade hit blue-collar voters hard, and many believe trade cost them jobs and growth in the places they live in. Trump claims to be anti-TPP (though Pence is pro-NAFTA), but Clinton was for the TPP until later in her campaign.


If anyone here is going to scapegoat third-parties and young voters/millennials for being apathetic about the election, don't! You'll repeat the same mistakes as Bob Dole, Kerry, McCain, and Romney. Focus why Trump succeeded in areas where she failed. Again, is he better than Clinton? Not even close. But does it mean he can't sell himself as better than her? No. Trump was able to rally people into voting for him and excite them. His campaign team sold the idea that Trump can improve America better than Clinton. The purpose of a campaign is to sell a message. Trump sold his message better.

 

Clinton's campaign repeated the same mistakes as Romney during his campaign. Like he, they cost her the election.

She had a fake personality, with Trump you could at least trust how lame he is going to be lol. Also I think a demographic of voters were split between her and the third parties.

Like it or not, Trump is an honest politician. So much so that he was just a tad too honest. You may not like his opinions or ideas, but they were still truthful ones, while Hillary was pretty much the poster child for two faced politicians everywhere. 

Either way, this was gonna be a loose/loose scenario for America. But at least we got the lesser of two evils. Heavy emphasis on the word 'lesser.'

Like it or not, Trump is an honest politician.

There's nothing honest about him. He's a habitual liar and lies in his lies. Lies so much that he gets "Pants On Fire" ratings from Politifact. On top of this, he may be a sexual predator.

 

Yet, Clinton sold her candidacy worse than Trump and took the Rust Belt for granted. They didn't take him seriously, and those voting for him wanted to vote for any change even at the cost of their own country.

What a shocker, but this is where complacency gets you. Clinton is the poster woman of a society so high on social liberalism, culture wars, and delusions of its own righteousness that it believed it could snooze its way to victory. Its brush with Sanders was the first indication that something was wrong.

 

Though I favored Clinton for her policies, she never struck anyone as an exciting candidate. Obama was exciting. Trump was exciting. They both were something different. The only people I could see that were excited for Hillary were mainly the college-educated identity politicians who are much smaller in numbers compared to what the media megaphone makes them to be. On top of that, she could never stir the minority vote the same way their predecessor did, another major shock that Trump did so well with.

 

A protectionist message resonates so well with people who have seen their livelihoods gutted by the inevitable march of globalization and the availability of cheap supply, shipping, and labor. I live in the only borough of NYC that went Trump and I can tell you it feels exactly like a Rust Belt city here; blighted post-industrial neighborhoods, deteriorated infrastructure, and a massive drug epidemic. The economic policies, though Reagan-like, make some sense; replace the messed-up tax code here with tariffs for outsourcing.

 

After so many years of projecting power towards the outside world while rotting within, as nationalist movements swept so many other civilized nations over fears of destruction by overpopulation and the working people of this country felt disenfranchised by both moneyed and social special interests, change had to happen. This isn't exactly the kind of person I had hoped would bring it, nor did I vote for him, but the possibility of a total cultural transformation of Washington and this country keep me optimistic even amidst fears of losing funding for social programs and losing international alliances.

...No, she lost because America is sick of lying, corrupt Democrats.

 

Hillary actually still won the popular vote and only lost in Electoral votes....So America's population as a whole actually preferred The Democrat Candidate over Trump.
