14 year olds being 14 year olds. It's definitely obnoxious, but if they only know of big name stuff like Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online, then I wouldn't expect them to know much either. And if they find old stuff boring? At least they're happy to try new things and are discovering a whole new world of shows and movies to watch. at least 14 year olds were sillier and happier to admit they like things than nowadays. frickin ironic weebs are aobnoxious i tell you

This kind of thing is initially what turned me off to anime... These kind of overly cringy anime fans (they don't even get the honor of being called wannabe weebs) really made me not really want to watch anime. But at the same time, my crush in high school was obsessed with anime so I still really, REALLY wanted to watch some, so maybe I could talk to him instead of poking him . He was obsessed with it to the point that he made a list of anime pages long to watch, and he went through at least a couple of pages of it by the time he got out of high school. From stuff like Sword Art Online and Black Butler to stuff so obscure I had no idea what he was even talking about.

Teenagers these days are only interested in the new popular anime, nothing old that helped make the genre popular in the US like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. You can tell who they are because they're wearing Attack on Titan jackets or cosplaying as Kirito at conventions. I will be the first to admit that I enjoyed SAO when i first watched it but then realized what a pile of drek it is. Kids today are afraid to spread their horizons in anime and only watch what is popular at the time. Ask them about any movie Miyazaki has done and they don't know who that is. It's very sad.

Well other than this group, me, and a few of my friends, it was kind of the opposite.

is it just me or is it starting to get a bit gatekeep-y in here? The notion that you can't be "a diehard fan" without knowing about [insert popular thing here] needs to die off.

I really don't like this argument. I mean, it still looks bad at the end of the day, regardless of it's justifiable or not.

The same thing applied to the vast majority of the previous generation of anime fans.

I'm gonna assume that, based on this line, you haven't actually talked to any teenage anime fan. 

I agree with what Black Sabbath is saying. I have been an anime fan for a long time(well, not that long...dating back to the old days when they would show anime on Toonami...is that long ago? I dunno) and I still have not seen Akira. I mean I know of the film, but I have no real interest in watching it. The same for Miyazaki's films. I don't think any fan has to necessarily have seen the "classics" to be a fan of the medium. I think people should just watch what they enjoy. If you enjoy nothing but shonen series like Naruto, My Hero Academia, One Piece, etc., then go for it.

However, I don't necessarily agree with the idea that older animation necessarily looks bad. It's purely subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and such. Take Sailor Moon for example, I find the style of animation in the "old" series much more endearing than the "new(Sailor Moon Crystal)" one, but that's just my opinion.

GitS is one of the finest works that anime has to offer 

It's their loss if they cannot appreciate the artistic value of the classic

That's true, but I never said it wasn't. My point was that whether or not you can justify any potential problem is irrelevant because the problem is still gonna be there regardless.
