It is with a heavy heart that Tomas Lindberg, the frontman for At The Gates, the band that kickstarted the Melodic Death Metal movement, has passed away at age 52 from cancer.
in the 90s, if metal wasn't Underground from the grunge movement, it went one of two ways: Nu-metal thanks to Korn, or Melodic Death thanks to At The Gates. People wanted extreme music that wasn't a morbid joke. Something that paired the melody of Iron Maiden with the ferocity of Slayer. And all that came to pass with 1995's Slaughter of the Soul, changeling the course of Metal history. Without At The Gates, there would be no Arch Enemy, Soilwork, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Triuvium, Killswitch Engage, Unearth or Shadows Fall. And it was all lead by Tomas and his voice, which Metal Hammer magazine best described as a 'Flamethrower Howl'. Rumor has it Tomas knew things might not go his way during surgery for his cancer, so he recorded all the vocals for the next At The Gates album.
Rest in power, Tomas. You're legacy is living on.
