I started off on the sidelines, being among the many people who looked at Bronies with confusion. I recall having first heard of a Brony and laughed at the idea. Later, I watched an episode of Tosh.0 that depicted Bronies as pony porn enthusiasts, which I found to be quite wierd. Why would a grown man be interested in a cartoon for little girls? It wasn't until I researched Bronies online that I came to understand this. I was genuinely curious.
There were sites to rifle through but I wanted answers quickly. My search soon led me to youtube, where in the comments of one video I watched mentioned Derpy Hooves. The name alone intrigued me so I entered it to see what came up. To my surprise, several videos popped up. The one that caught my eye was Save Derpy. A fan made work of the sad little pony apologizing. This brought me to tears because I was laughing so hard. This is a fanfiction, right? They didn't make a "special" pony for the show, did they? I embarked on another search to verify this pony's existence.
Again, to my surprise, she was in fact part of the show and her name was derived from the fans themselves for her derpy appearance. My continued search led me to her first dialogue in the show. When she spoke, I thought it was the most adorable thing I'd seen and heard in a cartoon. (Never thought I'd describe anything as adorable) Then I understood why she needed to be saved. Knowing she made her debut in episode 1, I pulled it up on netflix and watched. After spotting her I was satisfied, then the show ended with a to be continued... I was curious to see how they succeed so I watched the next episode. All the while I found myself amused and laughing over the subtleties that go over the heads of younger audiences. And then, I kept watching...
After watching the first few episodes it becomes clear that Ponyville isn't all rainbows and sunshine-happy land. There are monsters and dangers. A hierarchy and upper/lower classes. Commerce, jobs and common issues that everyone can relate to on some level. I've come to agree that the show IS well written, voiced and animated. Just as so many have stated along my quest to understand Bronies. And then there is the life lesson at the end. I recall a show from my childhood that did something similar. Remember this line: "Knowing is half the battle." ?
Okay, so GI Joe didn't lead up to the lesson through the show, but we remember it because we watched until the very end. Some of us may have even learned something from it. MLP FiM does this quite well. I don't need a cartoon to teach me how to be a better person, there are works that have existed for centuries that teach this: Religious texts.
As I write this, I am about halfway through season 2. My favorite pony is Applejack for her honesty and hard work ethic... and her cute southern accent. I now consider myself a Brony. As for the less savory aspects of Bronies, to each their own. What kind of Brony would I be if I didn't accept people of a different mindset? Better yet, what kind of human being would I be?
In closing, I'd like to apologize for being an uninformed douche. MLP IS great! I have a best friend who has been my best friend for over 20 years. That has to be some kind of magic in itself. Thank you for letting me share my story!
