Good to know they haven't left derpy in the dust since that stupid "making fun of retarded people" thing happened. This episode is by far my favorite episode of the season and really had some great RD character development with the wonderbolts! I don't like how they have changed Spitfires character per-say but i still loved everything about this episode!

Its really not bad writing, they explained it at the beginning and its not hard to figure out that the babies have no control over when it happens, its easy to say they are doing it without control as rarity and rainbow dash said. Also scoots isn't handy cap...there are things called late bloomers. Theres no reason to argue this, its stupid and seems pointless. 

I really like they are starting to try and appeal to bronys more and more.

I actually have a similar topic with this. But here's something that could trip things up. What if there were only earth ponies and trisomies popped up causing the sprout of pegasai and unicorns? Like if one set of chromosomes in a karyotype was responsible for determining that the pony would have a horn or a set of wings? Have you also considered how an Alicorn is made genetically?

In science you make hypothesis and go on from there, this is merely if the races are determined by alleles and not chromosomes but it could also very well be sex linked or chromosomal. I explained my hypothesis on Alicorns in the idea that they are decided through either a genetic change mid life (twilight) or by having the alleles for a unicorn/pegasus and also having a extra set of chromosomes for being able to display both traits, kind of like an adapter if you will. (Cadance)  So when you think about it i believe its Allele based and not chromosomal based on the fact that Mr. cake basically said its because of his heritage and we could easily use a pedigree if we knew how much family he had to figure out where the path led. Also judging from the mane six's reaction in the episode its clear to me its normal for races to have the same type of race, making the idea of it being more of a parental thing more likely. Of course you can have parents passing down their races through sperm and egg and the respectable halves of the chromosomes. But i find this being allelic more likely than chromosomal.

I kinda learned this stuff in 7th grade, but then forgot about how to understand and do it, so I might not say much, but it would seem accurate if the Earth Pony got higher-rated in potential genes because it seems that Unicorns and Pegasi got it easier in survival; I was mainly supporting natural selection.

That would be a good theory but you have to remember earth ponies are the only race to be able to grow food, pegasi are the only ponies to be able to control the weather, and unicorns were the only race to make it night/day so in theory natural selection was completely even in these 3 races as they needed each other. I'm not saying natural selection does not exist in this world, but i do believe we are yet to see a pony race that was not favored by natural selection. 

I guess we can agree on that, I just felt that they didn't explain it a bit more clearer.

yes i would have really liked them to explain it a little more but what they gave me was enough to formulate a hypothesis on the very very basic makeup of their race genetics. so i'll take it! 

I'll go out on a limb and say that the Baby Cakes episode was the first step in confusing some people about how pony genetics work. Those are some good possible scenarios, at least it explains it better than the episode rarely did.

Actually it probably clarified it more than confused us. If you think about it, without the episode we wouldn't know if it acts more like it does on earth or if its a completely new system. This way though, we have confirmation it behaves more to earths rules. 

You would also have to consider even more variables as ancestry also matters. As Mr. and Mrs. Cake make a prime example. Both of them were Earth Ponies yet they had a Pegasus AND a Unicorn. Ancestry is obviously a large key factor. So that being said, there'd be about 9000 different variables to deal with. Also, where would Alicorn's go? I would think Earth Ponies = aa, Unicorns/Pegasi = Aa, and Alicorns = AA. Or vice versa.

 the only problem with that is AA is dominant and as we all know if dominant is showing then it means its going to express the dominant trait so it wouldn't make sense for Alicorns to only express in the AA but no the Aa, also alicorns are very special and we only know of 4, one of which was genetically altered mid life. I hypothesize that Alicorns are a mutation displaying a dominant allele but also having an extra chromosome somewhere in there. It could also be sex linked as the only alicorns we know of are female. Either way they are definitely not just AA or Aa (they must have something extra in chromosomes or where the magic is centered). Also earth ponies can not be anything but AA and Aa due to 2 earth ponies who were carriers have a unicorn/pegasus (which is what i was saying from the beginning with ancestral heritage. If earth ponies were aa then it would be essentially impossible for the cakes to have a unicorn and pegasus. 

 How would aa be both Pegasus and Unicorn?

the allele "aa" just shows it is expressed when it has no dominant alleles (A) whatsoever. Its just a representation, but i hypothesized that the wings/horn is decided through some sort of crossing over and/or sex linked as well, i could do another representation with sex linked but i could have to do some research. Either way the races for pegasi and unicorn are both homozygous recessive and the earth pony race would be heterozygous and homozygous dominant. Going off of the baby cakes episode where 2 earth ponies had a pegasi and a unicorn. Any other way would not make sense.

She leans in and kisses him before she leaves

Rainbow Dash begins to look nervous but senses Nova is not buying it

"I wouldn't be so quick as to call him an idiot Nova, i mean..."

She then remembers Rainbow Boom told her not to tell him about the conversation they had

"Uh...actually yeah, buck that guy. I mean he did land you in here."

Rainbow Dash stifles her laughter

"Uh...kind of a long story heh heh."

"But do you remember anything that happened at the party? Like what you said to me specifically?"

Rainbow Dash moves closer and sits on the foot of his bed and touches his hoof clearly thankful that hes awake

Rainbow Dash stands there for a good while with her mouth gaped open

"Nova...I....I..."

As she starts talking a loud sound is heard and then gasps followed by loud shouting

"YOU MOTHERBUCKER"

Rainbow Dash looks over to see a very angry Rainbow Boom barreling towards Nova

"I'M GOING TO RIP YOUR THROAT OUT AND SHIT DOWN YOUR NECK NOVA"

Rainbow Dash flys and tackles Rainbow Boom

"WHAT IN EQUESTRIA DO YOU THINK YOUR DOING?!"

"Get off me Dashie, i'm going to kill that little pathetic excuse of a pegasus!"

"No you aren't Boomie! Your not killing anyone, what the..."

Mr. and Mrs. Cake walk in followed by Pinkie Pie and intervene

"Alright get up you two and get out of here, no violence or alcohol allowed during Pinkies Parties!"

"Nova, you need to get out of here, when Boomie gets mad he..."

Before Dashie could finish Rainbow Boom erupts out from under her and rushed towards Nova at a speed never though possible and grabs nova by the neck

"Have fun back at the hospital Nova"

Before Nova can respond he is thrown to the ground by a raging Rainbow Boom beaten for what seems like hours until he loses consciousness

"Boomie...what...why..."

Rainbow Dash starts cursing as the very drunken Rainbow Boom flys away leaving the aftermath of what just happened with police and ambulance sirens closing in

"BOOMIE GET BACK HERE!"

Just then Rainbow Dash takes off after Rainbow Boom

"What in the hay are you doing Dashie?"

"What the buck just happened back there?"

"I did what had to be done"

Rainbow Boom then leaves Rainbow Dash in the dust as he flys away with the speed from the sonic rainboom he created

"Well...time to get back to Nova then, i'll look for that idiot later."

Rainbow Dash arrives back at Pinkies Party only to find Nova being taken in a stretcher

"How bad is he doc?"

"I'm not a doctor young lady, are you his friend?"

"Well...you could say that"

"Did you see what happened?"

Rainbow Dash though for a second

"No, sadly i didn't."

"Please come with us, we need someone to be marked down as his contact."

"Are we going to the hospital? Is he that bad?"

Rainbow Dash starts to look very worried and beings sobbing again

"I'm not sure whats wrong yet but it looks like hes going to be fine, just please come with us."

Rainbow Dash and co. arrive at the hospital

"Doc we need an ICU room ready stat!"

"What happened?"

"Mrs. please stay here"

Dashie is left in the waiting room while the doctors go into the ICU

"Well he seems to have two broken bones, 4 cracked ribs, both eyes are going to be black, and something we can't explain happened to his head."

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know...it seems as if something knocked his head back into place rendering his wings useful."

"Were they not already?"

"We pulled his records back from 3 years ago and found he had lost his flying ability."

"...and now they magically work?"

"That is correct, we don't know why but it seems he has control over them once again."

"Place him into a bed and let him rest, also let that young lady stay by his bedside...we don't need any more crying girlfriends or whatever she is in the waiting room."

Dashie is told to report to room B17 if she wished to wait by Nova Flyers bedside

3 days of waiting and constant worrying Dashie is finally told the extent of Novas injuries but is also told the good news

"But...thats..."

"Impossible, yes we know but it seems to have happened. Please give Nova 3 more weeks of recovery before we can clear him. Has he awoken at all?"

"No...hes just been sleeping."

"Well you can leave at anytime."

"I know...i will stay here."

"As you wish, he also has another visitor coming up."

"Wait...who?"

"It says his name is Rainbow Boom, are you two related?"
 

"No we aren't."

"Ah well here he is, i have to go, I'll be back in a bit to check on Nova."

Rainbow Boom enters the room leaving Rainbow Dash's mouth gaping once again

"You've really got to stop doing that heh heh."

"what in the hay are you doing here?"

"checking on our friend"

"OUR friend?"

"sshh you'll wake him heh heh"

"shut your trap, i should pummel your face in right here and land you in a bed next to Nova"

"You know i don't hit mares Dashie and you also know i won't turn you in so if you feel thats the best way to handle this then go ahead."

Rainbow Boom stared at Rainbow Dash with a cold hard stare

"ehhh....i'm not going to hit you Boomie, you know that"

"Yes i do heh heh."

"Why are you even here?"

"Did my plan work?"

"What plan?"

"Well for starters are you in love with him?"

"Well...i don't know..."

"Oh please, the guy reserves his whole life for you and your saying you don't love him?"

"well..."

"Secondly, his wing power is back is it not?"

"How did you..."

"I knew why his wings weren't working Dashie, its basic biology"

"Huh...what?"

"His brain stem connecting his spinal cord to his brain that allowed information to pass through his neck and down to his brain was never severed, he'd be dead otherwise. It was just an inch to far right, rendering it useless as far as wings go."

"How did you..."

"I'm not stupid Dashie, i know what the problem was i just didn't know how to fix it until last night."

"What?"

"His brain was never damaged either and he never had any mental problems, his lateral ventricles were in fine shape and his subarachnoid space was not damaged or swollen. I know this from the CAT scan performed 3 years ago. I mean these doctors really need better training if they can't figure this out..."

"So wait..."

"Yes i planned all this out Dashie. I knew if he lost it an inch to the right then if i hit him the same way and it moved an inch to the left he would be fine."

"How did you know it wouldn't kill him?"

"Well his Meninges would protect his brain from my blows."

"What?"

"Just now i was the reason he can fly. Well that and my 3 years of studying."

"You spent 3 years..."

"Studying to give him his flying ability back? Why yes i did."

Nova begins to stir

"Well here he comes, i got to go. Don't tell him about this conversation and thanks for not reporting me to the police, i thought for sure i was bucked. Theres a reason i said I did what had to be done Dashie."

"but..."

"See you in 2 months at the competition!"

Rainbow Boom flys out of the hospital as Nova wakes up

"Uh...Hi Nova."

"So what, your just going to go through life only caring about me? Nova, what do you think your going to do when i move away for Wonderbolts training or when we both graduate and have our own lives to live. I'm not going to be around forever and eventually were going to have to move on."

Rainbow Dash begins to sound angry but calms down slowly throughout the rant

"Honestly, have you even thought about what your going to do in the next 3 years after you graduate?"

Rainbow Dash looks around to make sure Rainbow Boom isn't nearby

"You might want to take a look at yourself Nova, sure you can't fly buy at least you know your destiny better than most colts at your age. Not to mention neither of you have many friends, In fact you both only had me until you met each other and don't forget Rainbow Boom was expelled from the only school he ever loved. He hated Canterlot Public but he stays because he there he shines and isn't questioned. I suppose you did get the worse end but Rainbow Boom was still impacted by the clash Nova. He didn't want to get drunk because he couldn't handle this either...if i had to bet i'd say he got drunk in hopes of passing out and not doing anything stupid. Also where do you expect him to go? He has no real friends in this town and Pinkie and your friend haven't been seen all night. I'm just saying go easy on him, he may be a pain in the flank but deep down hes genuinely a nice guy. Why would i be his friend if that wasn't true?"

Rainbow Boom starts to look irritated

"Well i guess your going to be an ass about this."

"Shut up Boomie, Nova...please listen, it is true...BUT I do care for you now. Does it really matter what my intentions were at first as long as i do care about you now? I mean i never did anything bad i just though it was a burden to have to sit there with someone i didn't know, but now its anything but a burden..."

"I just thought you had the right to know the truth Nova...she really does care about you and theres no reason you have to be such an ass to me for telling you the truth."

Rainbow begins to soften up a bit

"So has your life always..."

As rainbow asked her question she was interrupted by rainbow boom's grumbling from behind

"I thought you went to go get wasted like usual..."

"These idiots here carded me so i left... I hate this town"

"Really? Last time we were here you loved it, you even said we should move here one day."

"Eh, whatever...opinions change Dashie."

"Riggghhttt..."

"So did you tell him what happened that night in the ICU or did you give him the usual bullshit story about how we went to get wasted and you volunteered to stay behind."

"Ok you gave the usual bullshit story...basically Nova, i feel you have a right to know this: Dashie never volunteered to stay behind...the hospital staff said they needed someone to be marked down as a friend to call if something happened or something along those lines, since Dashie was he only mare out of our group we decided she would sign as your friend, It actually worked perfectly to because i doubt you wanted to see me as the person who signed and none of my other friends were willing to do it...her being a mare was kind of a bonus to make you feel better. She also probably told you that we went and got drunk...well we didn't do that either believe it or not. I'll admit the others in our group did but i actually stayed with Dashie, of course i left when you started to wake up because you didn't need the stress that would have ensued if you saw me. Dashie didn't really care for you either, We stayed because we owed it to you and nothing more. You probably know i got expelled from Cloudsdale High the next day, now i'm not saying she doesn't care about you now...she actually started to care about you once i had to leave but before that you were nothing than a near burden to her...I don't enjoy telling you that but its the truth."

"Are you done yet?"

"Now that he knows the truth yes."

"You can be such a jerk, you know?"

Rainbow Dash turned around to face Nova with sobbing eyes but a cold hard stare

"I know your probably thinking of the worst possible scenarios right now but let me explain..."

"It all started back when you got hit, Rainbow and I were with the rest of the team drinking away our loss because of you and Rainbows clash that cost us the win. We got a little buzzed and decided that we should go if you were alright but when rainbow found out you were in the ICU being treated for neurological problems he started feeling really bad so the team and her went to go drink some more. I stayed behind because someone had to and I volunteered, then i started to get close to you and couldn't just leave you. So i stayed and befriended you, Rainbow didn't understand why but after that night he was forced to leave Cloudsdale by the principal for reckless endangerment of another student. He apparently went to Canterlot public and made that school the powerhouse in flying in just one year. I can't even explain how our principal took it when we lost championships to him and he went undefeated every year hes been captain so far. I wanted to transfer there with him but he told me i would have a better chance at Wonderbolts recruiting if i stayed and became the Cloudsdale captain. Obviously he didn't anticipate how good he would get at flying. We stopped talking for those years away and just currently rekindled, also Rainbow is genuinely a decent person. Sure he can be arrogant, conceded, kind of a jerk, and see like an ass at times. But when shit hits the fan hes usually the only one who can remain calm and hes actually extremely loyal. The first time he saw he again earlier this week we got into a fight but eventually he came and apologized with your friend. I don't know if loyalty is a trait Rainbow colored ponies all exhibit but were the only 2 known to ponykind at the moment, with the exception of my father...I've actually never met his parents. Anyways thats what happened, so whats new with you?"

Rainbow stares at Nova looking uneasy

Rainbow Boom turned around to see the cyan-rainbow pegasus standing behind him

"Dashie?!"

"Hey Rainbow"

"what in the hay are you doing here, i told pinkie not to invite you! I didn't even know you still talked to her!"

"Of course i still talk to pinkie, you knew how much i liked her, you should also know pinkie..is well...pinkie. She doesn't tend to listen very much."

"Eh well i'm going to get a drink, I can't handle this sober."

"You know pinkie is to innocent to have beer at her parties..."

"then i'll go to the convenience store nearby, i look 21."

"What in the hay is your problem? First you take Nova here to see Pinkie to i'm going to guess cheer him up, and then when i get here you just want to go get wasted off your flank. What the hay is going on with us, we used to be best friends...you were like my brother and now you don't even want to talk to me..."

"I took Nova here to see Pinkie, not you. You two being together can only end badly for reasons only you and I both know. You want to tell him the reason why you stayed by his bedside and made him feel better? You be my guest, i'm going to get wasted and pass out in the corner, i'll take Nova home tomorrow."

Rainbow Boom leaves to the store nearby leaving Rainbow Dash sobbing in front of Nova

Oh boomie... you don't know what you just caused thinks Rainbow Dashie still sobbing

"How has that worked for you with flying? How does one troubleshoot a problem that can't be fixed, at least from what you've said. Look i feel terrible for what happened. I pissed off my best friend and completely screwed my school over and then proceeded to mercilessly beat them in everything they were known for. I feel like if i can help you get back in the air somehow i would feel a lot better and..."

Rainbow Boom is interrupted by Pinkie Pie

"Hey guys follow me, i got something to show you!"

"I'll tell you more later, where are we headed Pinkie?"

"To the park you silly filly!"

"I'm not a filly but ok..."

they walk to the park 

"SURPRISE!" (Whole town says in unison)

"Gosh Pinkie, are you trying to give me a heart attack?"

"hehe sorry, but i threw this party just for Nova!"

"Ok so were going to go talk over there for a second..."

they walk over to a snack bar

"So as i was saying..."

"Nova?" (the voice sounds choked up)
