Della Duck was rarely mentioned in TV media, and in the troublesome trio’s first short, Della asked Donaod to take care of them. In other media, same thing. Her lack of presence was a mystery, especially in the first DuckTales. The new DuckTales, however, went into a really bold direction.

1. In the first episode, they establish who their mother is to everyone’s surprise. From that moment on, the new DT underwent a different direction compared to its predecessor.
2. The show establishes Della as Donald’s twin sister and sticks with it. The comics tried once before, but backtracked due to continuity concerns. However, DT 2017 is a brand-new continuity, so they can mold old and new materials into their own.
3. The Duckcrew worked with the Amputee Coalition to make her a positive role model to handicapped children, especially those who need prosthetics. Della needed to saw off her own leg to survive on the moon, recreated a metallic leg with spare parts, and make sure there’s an impact while not degrading her.
4. Della’s desire for adventure separated her from her kids ten years ago. But her desire to return home and reunite with her family is why she spent long, tiring hours working to fix the Spear of Selene. The show established that she made a really serious mistake, however worked to rectify it.
5. While most Disney canons lacked her presence, DT 2017 committed ten years of her life to reunite with her family and meet her sons. Her disappearance and pursuit home matter. The Duckcrew/Quackcrew didn’t let part of the McDuck family tree hanging. That, along with her lack of presence with her kids for over eight decades along different canons, helped shape their long-awaiting family reunion. Now that she’s back, she has another goal: to be a good mom.

Combine her radical redesign, and this path to make Della important when most Disney canons ignored her took a ton of guts. And it’s paying off!
