Do private security officers have the right to detain people? I literally got in trouble with the security guard at Wal-Mart because I took a picture of a nice looking car in the parking lot. He kept telling me that I couldn't go anywhere and that "I was detained until the police arrived". Needless to say, I told him to get a life (I was a lot ruder than that lol) and I just walked out.Β

Only if they believe you have broken an actual law. In which case it's using the same rules as a 'citizen's arrest', as long as you are on the property of their employer. Which means they *have* to call the cops, and a cop has to come to formally arrest you. If they don't do that, then the detention is illegal and is effectively kidnapping.

I kind of hope they called the cops just for them to hear how ridiculous everything is. All I did was take a picture of a Dodge Charger Hellcat that was parked there. I didn't even take a picture of the license plate. I still walked out just because the employees and the security guard were simply wasting my time over this.
