    Just so you know, i don't read every single status update that appears in my notifications, it's tiring going through them all

      On your profile: Edit my Profile -> Notification Options; under 'status updates', remove the tick from 'Notify me when one of my friends updates their status'. I also keep turned off 'Notify me of replies to status updates I have replied to' =)

      That's the only option, I'm afraid, aside from turning them on or off for good. =/ Though I'd still recommend you turn off 'Notify me of replies to status updates I have replied to', if there's often long conversations in status updates you comment on =)
