I just had the privilege to witness Godzilla minus one…IN BLACK AND WHITE!!! …and if you want my honest opinion, it is THE definitive version of the film and I’d absolutely recommend to go and watch it in black and white while you still can. It absolutely fits the setting of the film, right after WWII, Japan re-building itself from the ground up, dealing with a new threat. It really does set the mood and it feels like it was made in the late 1940s. I did watch the original version almost 11 months ago and I did say that I need to watch the film again to give my thoughts about it. Well, this was my 2nd chance to re-watch Godzilla minus one and…yeah, I can definitively say that this film absolutely deserves its praise. It is an incredibly dark and depressing film. It’s one of THE darkest Godzilla movies in the franchise. To see the atomic breath scene in black and white was absolutely breath-taking (it had me on the edge on my seat witnessing it, devoid of colour, knowing the disaster that is about to unfold), and horrifying at the same time. This was definitely the most animalistic version of Godzilla we’ve ever seen on film, and since this was my 2nd time watching the film, I certainly picked up on a couple of things I missed. What a fantastic way to celebrate godzilla’s 70th anniversary. This was a once in a life-time experience and this is something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. To see what shikishima went through, the mistake he made that cost the lives of his men, his PTSD, caring for norkio and akiko, trying to make a living after the war, avenging his fallen comrades (and noriko) and the entirely of Japan fighting for a brighter future…This movie truly is a cinematic masterpiece.
(Now I have this theme stuck in my head again. this is such a hauntingly beautiful track from the film) ^^
