Sterling left the top of the ship and trotted around, looking at how everypony else was doing... He could see Red Talon helping the ship set sail... He could see Clover using her magic to keep the sails going as well... The same went with Steel... North Light and somepony who seemed like his sister was also having fun on the ship... Even Blue Note was probably back at her cabin doing some composition... 

 

Sterling trotted around sadly back to his cabin... He felt alone... He didn't have his Evening by his side to love and cherish him... For all he knew, she could be on the brink of death without him knowing it at all... The cabin felt emptier than ever to him... He could only see his bunk bed, the window, and some of his personal belongings as he trotted towards the bed... 

 

Sterling slowly placed his saddlebag onto his bed... And all he could do was flow his tears... one by one... While everypony else seemed preoccupied with their work, all Sterling could do was give out one tear at a time... His aides seemed healthy too, so they didn't need his medical aid... Now he was all alone... lonely... Everything felt dark to him... the starry night only added to the effect...

Chronos noticed Clover casting the spell to create the magewind , watching in amazement at her power. Talking with her seemed like a sensible approach now. "Umm... Excuse me, Princess!" Chronos mumbled. "I was wondering if I could talk to you about magic, since you're the Princess of Magic and all. It's just..." Chronos blushed, struggling to say it. "I... I... I never... learned how to use magic..."

@, Clover was surprised to hear a unicorn admit this; it seemed to her to be amazing! "I could teach you, if you like," she offered. "Back home, I took in private students to teach magic and saw some surprising results, even from unicorns who were unable to even perform the slightest spells."

"Th...thanks..." Chronos said, now feeling more than a little embarrassed. He knew it was odd for unicorns to be unable to perform magic, but then he still hadn't even gotten his cutie mark after all this time! He felt a little better knowing that the Princess of Magic herself would be teaching him magic!

Blue Note sat quietly on the ship. She was useless, as usual. Canterlot was looming over her thoughts; that was the last place she wanted to meet death. When she could escape Canterlot, death still remained. Klackon appeared every time she closed her eyes, so she resolved to look at anything and everything else. She didn't want to think about what might happen next...

DJ raced up the steps to Canterlot Castle, Vinyl and Chronos behind him. He hoped they weren't too late! What if the madpony had beaten them there? Currently , everything looked normal, but they wouldn't know for sure until they reached the throne room...

They were now entering Canterlot Castle. It was a dark, moonlit night, but it didn't matter that it was dark to Sterling Crimson or anypony else for that matter. He didn't have any time to think about anything else but the mad pony who wanted to take over the world. Not even the thought of Evening's condition could worry his mind... all that he could think of was saving the world...

Steel was right behind his captain, already he had his weapons drawn to bear. From the looks of things, Canterlot seemed all right. He prayed to the Princesses that it would stay that way, but he was ready to defend his home tooth and hoof if he had to.

As he burst into the throne room, DJ prepare himself for a fight. Inside...everything was normal. Princesses Celestia and Luna, who were in the middle of a conversation, stopped talking and looked at the centre of the commotion. "Oh... Everything's ok...?" DJ asked, confused.

 

Celestia nodded. "Everything's fine," she replied. "Why? Has there been any more news on the Nightmare Spirits and Pen Umbra?"

DJ nodded as Steel answered the Princess. When it came to him, DJ spoke up. "We now know that the Darkstar is in fact the gems we found on our journey, and that we are indeed the bearers. Chronos is the one chosen to unlock it's power, but how, we're still not sure. Apparently there's another gem, for our new ally Nightstrike." He nodded to the assassin pony as an introduction. "Though we think it may be in the palace somewhere. And the main problem is that Callaloo thinks that Pen Umbra may come here to wake the Nightmare Spirits!"

 

Celestia listened carefully to what DJ had to say, nodding as she listened. Finally, she spoke. "Callaloo's grandfather came to me many years ago, looking for the Darkstar fragment. He felt it would be found on Luna's balcony at the top of the castle, the place where Starswirl defeated the Nightmare Spirits. However, he did not locate it. If you wish to look there, neither myself or my sister would object to it!"

"So I guess we should look up on that balcony first then..." North said, looking up into the ceiling.

"Aye... I bet it be great for gliding from..." Midnatt replied, mimicking North almost identically as she too looked up into the ceiling.

"Of all places, the very top of the balcony?!" Red responded to the Princess in disbelief. "You gotta be joking! Thousands of years and it hasn't been found up there?"

To Red, none of this seemed to make sense. "Why wouldn't anypony have found it by now?! I'm tellin' ya, this journey just gets weirder and weirder, man."

Sterling heard the conversation that was goin on between DJ, Steel, Princess Celestia about the ninth and final gem that would be needed to defeat the evil pony... Princess Celestia told of how Luna's balcony could possibly hold the location of the final Darkstar piece... It wasn't much of a lead to Sterling, but he nodded in agreement when Celestia had no objections for the group to check there! It could be their chance to get the last piece... It had to be done...

 

"Well, the balcony looks pretty hard to access without wings... but I feel that we still need to get there and see if the last piece is there! Maybe it was well hidden there all this time! Let's go!" Sterling spoke with determination before calling for the others to head towards the balcony...

Blue Note wondered how they would find the last piece of the weapon. She hoped that knew they were coming. It was clear that the pieces commanded a self-aware magic. How else would it have known to call to her? Perhaps the last piece was also looking for them...

"The balcony looks difficult to get to on hoof," Clover remarked, after listening carefully to what Princess Celestia had to say. "Perhaps the pegasi ought to go up first and check it out, before the unicorns arrive."

 

She forgot she had her own wings, before suddenly remembering. "Oh, I forgot, I suppose I could fly up also, tho Red and Steel would have to help me, as I've never flown before."

"While I like the idea, I can't help but get the feeling we should go up together," DJ replied. "Just in case something is up there, it is best we go all of us, though how could we....?"

 

"My guards will provide the unicorns with a means of getting up there," Celestia responded. "They could bring my chariot up to it the balcony so you will all be able to reach it."

 

"Really? Thanks Princess Celestia!" DJ answered. He would feel better knowing they were all together. Turning to Vinyl, he said, "I'd like you to stay behind Vi."

 

"Why? Please not this again!" Vinyl replied. "Do you really think I'm not strong enough to handle myself?"

 

"That's not the problem! I don't want you getting hurt!"

 

Just when their sudden argument looked like it would become a full row, Vinyl sighed. "You know what? Fine... I'll stay.... Captain's orders after all..." She smiled sheepishly at him, and in return, DJ gave her a hug, ending the very unnecessary and strangely spontaneous row.

"Or maybe it'd be safer if some of the other just gave us a push?"

North and Midnatt seemed to be thinking for a bit, before nodding. Just as they did, Midnatt practically grabbed onto North, as she dragged him along outside. "Must be that one..." she said, pointing to one of the taller towers.

It was now late again... Evening couldn't stand not being able to breathe or function for that matter... her suffering was becoming too great... she felt weak... faint... tired... But she still had strength to do one more thing from her hospital bed... Write what would be her last letter to her dear Sterling... it was the least she could do for being so weak... for not being able to stay alive for him... the doctors had only given her one more day to live at most after her pneumonia became so advanced... With that, Evening reached as far as she could for a pencil and a piece of lined paper... and she began to write...

 

 

My dear Sterling...

 

If you are reading this letter, then I am no longer by your side... Fate has stepped between us... I'm sorry for being so weak... My sweet Sterling... please don't blame yourself for anything... You already saved my life... Although my lifetime was short, you have given me so much joy... so much love... Though you will mourn, life is like a tide... Please don't give up on life's joys... for me...

 

Evening wished to make a longer letter, but she couldn't... her hooves were becoming too weak as Nurse Redheart trotted into the room... Evening quickly folded the piece of paper and weakly handed it over to her...

 

"Please... Nurse... place this into an envelope, and give it to my dear Sterling before I move on..." Evening wheezed blood from her mouth as she replied... Nurse Redheart pleaded her to stop talking... she held the piece of paper on her and assured Evening that she would hand over the letter...

"That would be best," Clover replied, glad that Princess Celestia had found a solution. "I agree that it's better that we all go up together; we ought not to separate the group unless we really have to. I can cast a finding spell to make it easier to find the missing gem; the spell will make it glow, if it's there."

"Come then. the chariot is waiting for you outside," Celestia said, beckoning the group. "We had best not delay..." DJ, Vinyl and Chronos followed Celestia out to the gardens, where he Royal Charuot was waiting, with two pegasi guards pulling it. Vinyl and Chronos stepped ino the large chariot, as DJ prepared to fly up to the highest point of the castle with the other pegasi.

 

"The finding spell would be very useful Clover!" DJ said approvingly. "I just hope it is indeed up there..."

@, "So do I," Clover said, fervently. She flapped her wings experimentally, trying them out as it were. The air ruffled the white feathers of Clover's wings as she tried them out, making them feel light, and looking up, she felt sure that she could manage the short flight. And of course, her friends would be by her side. Clover felt a little nervous about flying for the first time, but knew she couldn't really put it off as the more she did so, the harder it would get.

Blue Note followed the other flightless ponies into the chariot. It made her feel a little nervous; she had never been the biggest fan of heights. But it certainly was not the scariest thing she had done in the past few days. And the sooner they found that weapon the better. Anything could happen in the moments they waited, and she would rather not be caught off guard.
