Sombra's origins

The IDW comics have cleared up a few things about King Sombra.  We now know that he was not king proper.  He proclaimed himself king, likely after taking over the Crystal Empire.  He was also relatively unknown to Celestia and Star Swirl prior to his rise to power.  Finally, his powers came from some outside force that made him all the more evil.

My thoughts on the matter:

Sombra was an ambisious, but weak unicorn.  Her could handle simple spells without trouble, but was unable to acheive impressive works of more well known unicorns.  Envious of their power, Sombra sought out the alicorns, thinking they could teach him spells that even Star Swirl had never heard of.  However, the alicorns could sense darkness in his heart and instead tried to teach him how to care for others.

Believing they were just depriving him of the magic he felt he deserved, Sombra saught to teach himself.  In his studies, he learned of an ancient monevolent evil that killed the gods.  When he found out the alicorns and draconiqui sealed the evil away long ago, he searched for the seals.  With even a fraction of it's power, he'd be more powerful than an alicorn, let alone a unicorn.

However, when he absorbed magic from the Bane of the Gods, it amplified the darkness in his heart and killed what good was left in it.  His frustrations turned to anger and he moved against the alicorns, slowly causing them to become extinct (except for Celestia and Luna, of course).

My thoughts on the matter:

I want Sombra brought back and given proper respect as the epic villain he easily could have and should have been.

On Topic: I don't really agree that he would have been a weak unicorn, not all powerful, but not weak. To me he comes off as someone who would be already fairly good and well studied in magic, but out of greed would want even more power, and willing to get it through any means he could and thus delving into dark magic because he would not fear the 'repercussions' that would be voiced by Celly and Lulu,Star swirl also.  He most likely just tapped into one of the negative elements, like fear, and embraced it(which would be this outside influence you spoke of).

I doubt their was a corruption as i feel he would already have been 'corrupted' long before he dove into the more hardcore dark magic.

Interesting theory, though I always imagined him as a straight up military commander who conquered the Empire using strategic prowess and powerful dark magic before he was taken down by the Royal Sisters for his tyranny. I also imagined him as being straight up evil; conquering the Empire for power's sake. He then lived on through a combination of willpower and dark magic.

Personally, I like to see him as a male Twilight. In that mean they were likely of similar power before their rise fall as eventual alicorn/dark lord. Big difference is that unlike Twilight who found a deeper meaning behind her calling, he went the other direction and gained his power through dark magic, deception, and fear.

A personal head canon I have been working on involved bringing Grogar into the mix. At their kingdom of Tambelon, Grogar ruled and was similar in vein to Melkor/Morgoth of Tolkien-fame with Sombra as his chief lieutenant, similar to Sauron.

Grogar had visions of bringing the entire world under darkness and he envied the power of the other kingdoms. In his lust for conquest, he sent Sombra to take over the Crystal Empire, but while he was gone, the royal sisters arrived at Tambelon with the elements of harmony and doomed Grogar while Sombra unknowingly took the Empire for his own.

It still needs some work, but I'm pleased with it so far.

Darn! I really want to read the comics, but they're, like, $3.00 per comic! That's way too much to spend on a comic book!

Yo! I'm Shenron00, but you can call me “Shen” if you want!

Thanks to WheatleyCore for the sig! BTW, yes, I do realize that's Carnage and not Shenron.
