In the show, while he doesn't really do that much, he's one Princess Cadence's Royal Guards. I wonder if they did have significant plans for him but instantly regretted such things when supposedly a lot of the Brony fandom exploded wit unbridled rage, a lot of people didn't want a love interest for Twilight Sparkle as it almost defeated one of the main points the show began with. Suffice it to say the character himself is not horribly bad (just faceless), it's what they were trying to do with him that got people upset.
