a program or comptuer that tells people before they post

Sorry I'm pretty sure that's impossible.

Basically, the members have to search on the forums if the thread they're about to create hasn't been already made.

Instead of a program, you mean a message that says, "thread title already in use", indicating that there is a similar topic, just before you post a topic? If so, that would be a great idea, however, im not sure if this site has that function. Halo Waypoint has that feature to avoid members from making a duplicate topic, but lets see wat staff say. Indeed it would be also great to have b/c its difficult to locate a topic and later someone finds it and its eventually merged. Saves time, tbh. Edited by Thunder-Wing

I'm not really sure if that would work because not everyone writes the same title for the same subject and you don't see many of the topics based on the same subject with the same title

Well, that could be true, however, 75% of the time, members will post a thread that has a similar discussion, just by altering the title and adding the same tags.    Like if the feature picked up on the "Title and Tags" and if it reads they are identical, it would alert the member that a thread already exists.

Well there could be something where the website detects a certain word in the title or tags that is similar to an other post with the same word in it but that might just lead to an other list what is what you don't want :/

Yeah, that just hit me, lol.  Yet, I like the idea on having such a feature on here, but indeed there will be some drawbacks to it.

All this would lead to just a shorter list XD

In theory it's a great idea, but ...

You're basically thinking along the line of something like a UNIQUE constraint to prevent adding the duplicate topic to the DB. Yeah, you are talking about a bit of custom PHP changes for the board, perhaps some false positives, and increased lag.

The Moderators can do this with just merging topics, right?

Man, you guys are trying to put me out of a job.

This is currently what is done. I'm not part of the tech team at all in any way shape or form, but when topics are identical or extremely close, we merge them for the sake of organization. Rather than writing up code to check for duplicate topics, reporting them seems a bit easier to me. As Jeric said, false positives could be an issue.

I dont like when someone takes my topics and posts another same theard with the exact same content.

Can I ask why? It seems to me that the discussion is more important than who made the thread.

I don't want to sound like I'm bursting anyone's bubble or anything, but I was under the impression that we had to manually search for a similar topic before posting a new one anyhow...

I guess if tags were able to be managed more efficiently and if everyone did a search before posting a new thread it would probably lessen the likelihood of this happening in the first place...
