Alicorns are shady

Alicorns of MLP might not be natural creatures, but 'created' with magic as shown with Twilight and Cadence. It'd be crazy if the same force that created Discord has an opposite that created Celestia and Luna.

 

Personally i think the Sisters were created though experimentation with the Elements of Harmony, combine this with the fact there is no mention of Alicorns before the unification where each race had its own ruler (Puddinghat, Platina and Hurricane). With racial tensions resolved only now would we see cross-breeding within the tribes that might possibly explain how Alicorns came to be.

Equestria has magic everywhere, The Everfree itself is powered by the Tree of Harmony for example. The frozen North seems to abundant with minerals that have even transformed the ponies themselves, The Crystal Heart seems to be Similar to the Tree. Its possible that opposites to this powerful artifacts exist beyond Equestria's boarders though to date the Alicorn Amulet is the only 'Dark Artefact'  to be confirmed.

 

The positions of raising the sun and moon have always existed though it took dozens of unicorns i concert to achieve. The fact that a single alicorn can it must have been a shock to them. I'd imagine Celestia and Luna probably earned thier positions because basically, I don't think a unicorn could stop them, even if they all tried. Also given Celestia is 1000 years old, her raising the sun became a fact of life for all ponies after that, its even a celebrated event during the solstice.

 

Discord might have been originally a much more melevelent (Celestia's description of him dueing his rein implies this) but I think being in Equestria so long has actually diluted his magic and personality, creating the whimsical embodiment as we now know him.

Maybe I read too many fanfictions.

(I am glad only one comment veered into the "its just a kid show" direction. Its a boring pedantic stance that kills discussion, get your imagination flowing!)

Alright say that the two sisters are just REALLY long lived, would that mean they eventually would have to hand off their power over celestial bodies to some other pony? If they don't then badness befalls the land

Why are no more alicorns being born? If two accended alicorns had a foal would it be a full blown Alicorn?

Also the sisters themselves have clearly shown that there is more going on they they would like ponies to think, unless we all forgot that whole Nightmare moon/Luna banished by Celestia for a thousand years(or however long it was) and then they are totally cool with hanging out together thing. if you got more life sentences then you could shake a stick at from your older sis, would YOU want to hang out?

I had a thought
Maybe Celestia is getting weaker in her old age... That is why she brought her sister back and assended Cadence and Twilight. She is getting to the point where she cannot do it on her own anymore. That became clear when she lost that fight and refused to even challenge Tirek.

Oooh I like that idea.

I am not a huge fan of this trend by some fans that the alicorns are secretly evil or Twilight and her friends are secretly evil or the villains are secretly the wronged parties and so on. It makes me think that this MLP universe bores them and they have to come up with weird ideas to make it sound more interesting. I believe that Celestia is good, period. There is no evil in her at all and there never was. It can really be that simple and it likely is. I don't even know if they are really serious or not. How can Celestia be evil? Unless you bring fan fiction into this.

I think even the characters in the show forgets that Luna was gone by then. Only Nightmare Moon remained and it was she that was banished. Not Luna.

Bores me? Quite the contrary if it bored me I wouldn't be talking about it at all. What IS boring for me is accepting everything at face value with no delving deeper into the story. If Celestia was simply good and nothing else wouldn't that make her a flat character?

 

Wouldn't it be more interesting and logical if she had to make tough decisions, keep big secrets, and do things that in some ponies eyes would be evil FOR What she thinks is the greater good? Did she really have to lock her sister up that long or did she THINK she had to? By questioning her motives you are trying to find inner depth they cannot really get into in episodic timeframes. But only taking it at face value says to me "I am not interested enough to find out more about you"

She might be a flat character but she also represents a higher ideal to some degree that the other characters are meant to look up to. Celestia has been shown to have problems emotionally regarding her choices...at least with Luna as she believes that she could have done things differently and the comics do help to promote this idea. But the comics at least show that her banishment of Nightmare Moon wasn't a secret. Ponies knew about it and she likely was quite open about what happened, at least that is what I feel about it. The crystal empire was just forgotten to a point where even she forgot about it. I think if she keeps things secret, it is to protect Equestria like from dark magic or something. I do like to learn more about the characters but also feel that throwing the canon on its head to assume the worst is what some people want to do. It is fine if Celestia being shady or evil or whatever is pointed to but I don't feel that this is the case.

As @PathfinderCS mentioned, the Tale of the Two Sisters goes into their backstory explaining how they became Princesses of Equestria. The book also implies

 

 

 

 

that Alicorns are not immortal, and that there were more Alicorns previously as the Sisters were taught by them.

I also agree with what you say. However its the sharing of ideas and theories that makes the picture clearer. So far we have come to the conclusion that Celestia and Luna were chosen for their roles because of the fact that they represented all the pony tribes. For the longest time Celetia was the only one in charge making tough decisions and facing many threats over the millenium. Celestia appears to be weakening after all this time however. She cannot stand against every threat like she used too and sees that the time for a replacement is at hand. She takes Twilight Sparkle under her wing and teaches her, having her form friendships and the elements of Harmony. She brought her sister back to take back her role of running the lunar cycle to lessen Celestias load. However the canterlot wedding attack proved to her that her power had waned when she was defeated in combat. So much so that she didnt even try to fight Tirek. That job she gave to her young apprentice who was made an Alicorn by this point. She even gave her a test run of raising the sun and moon. Celestia is reaching the end of her rope and is making preperations for the next Equestrian ruler, that is what all this is adding up too.
