SilverStarApple 850 September 7, 2014 Share September 7, 2014 (edited) Geass (ギアス, Giasu) is a supernatural ability which certain people can bestow upon others. C.C. is the most prominent character who grants the power of Geass. The Geass manifests differently in each individual, possibly related to their inner desires and personality. The power of Geass increases with use, and should the user lack the willpower, they may be consumed by it, which was the case with Mao. C.C. calls Geass the Power of Kings, and though she is unable to use the power herself, she is immune to the power being used on her. In the final episode of the second season, Lelouch states that the Geass is a form of wish (referring to himself and C.C.). However, people who have Geass are not immune to the Geass effects of others. The Geass is represented by a glowing, bird-shaped symbol. Every Geass, while powerful, has its own unique set of restrictions, limitations, or idiosyncrasies. These factors allow a Geass to be defeated, or its power limited, by someone who is aware of its characteristics. All Geass abilities that have thus far appeared within the canon of the television series have been related to the mind, influencing such things as will, thought, memory and perception. Geass abilities in the alternate universe manga Nightmare of Nunnally have no such limitations. All Geass, regardless of user, appear in only one eye in the initial stages. Eventually, assuming the user lives long enough, the Geass will eventually begin to grow until it shows on both eyes, seemingly as a result of repeated use, or pushing the Geass to exceed its own limits. However, overuse and/or mental instability can lead to an affliction known as "runaway Geass" that causes the user to become unable to control their Geass, making it become permanently active. Source: If any pony got a Geass, what would their ability be? What would Twilight's, or Rainbow Dash's, or Lightning Dust's, or Pinkie Pie's be? Keep in mind two important rules about Geass: 1. Geasses are psychic abilities, and they cannot affect the world of the living. 2. Only one version of a Geass ability can exist at any one time. So no, Twilight Sparkle will not get a replica of Lelouch's Absolute Command Geass. Make it something original, something that fits the pony while also playing off wishes, and "Be careful what you wish for". 3. Which power each person receives depends on their state of mind and what they want the most at the moment of binding: Lelouch wanted to change everything and got the absolute order power, CC wanted to be loved and got absolute love Geass, Charles probably had too many painful memories, Marianne was likely discontent with her own status (or maybe even body), etc. One more thing is that in the manga, Lelouch receives a different power under different circumstances from CC. It is also interesting that Lelouch is apparently the only Geass user with a limiter (one order per person), an early foreshadowing that he will be the only one to not succumb to it completely. This is probably because his subconsciousness always knew that giving absolute orders is wrong. Also... Lulu, who reveres the human will, gets the power to crush it? Chuck, who despises lies in all their forms, gets the power to lie on a whole new level? CC wants to be loved... and gets a power that makes her completely unable to discern whether someone actually loves her or just got mindwiped? Even Bismarck's geass seems to fit the same rule, considering he avoids using it when possible. Still, it's definitely a manifestation the person's true desire at the time of receiving the power of Geass. Geass is actually wishes (see episode 25 of R2), and as we all know, Be Careful What You Wish For... Actually, it sounds feasible, too. In any case, the nature of one's Geass power always depends on one's own personality and desires. Jeremiah's geass to cancel other geasses fits this pattern too, seeing as Marianne, the driving force in his life, is essentially just a geass suggestion at the point he receives it. So... Which pony would get what Geass? I'll start: Pinkie Pie's Geass would be the power to force everyone to smile, be happy, and lose all sense of individuality, free will, and the ability to enjoy themselves. They'll become brain-dead smiling sheep, a la the Newfoals. However, this smiling ability also makes everything seem like a good idea, so organizing an epic song and dance routine would be much easier. Hopefully, it's not permanent, but knowing Geass, it probably would be. Edited September 7, 2014 by Asquerade 1 I was dead until the moment I met you. I was a powerless corpse pretending to be alive. SilverStarApple 850 November 24, 2014 Author Share November 24, 2014 I think Twilight Sparkle's would be some variety of Mind-Reading ability. Unfortunately, it only works on one pony at a time, and gives you their full mind at once. So if you point it at someone dumb, prepare for an onslaught of stupid thoughts. Point it at someone evil, prepare to have unspeakable things done to your brain. And to add insult to injury... Point it at Celestia, and hear nothing, because she'd probably be immune to Geass. Pinkamena-Pills 6,840 November 24, 2014 Share November 24, 2014 Pinkie Pie's Geass would be the power to force everyone to smile, be happy, and lose all sense of individuality, free will, and the ability to enjoy themselves. They'll become brain-dead smiling sheep, a la the Newfoals. That doesn't make sense. You say her Geass would be to make people happy, yet in the same sentence you say they would lose the ability to enjoy themselves. So how are they happy if they aren't enjoying themselves. Wut. If you meant because they aren't truly enjoying themselves due to being forced, you sure about that? Is it really wrong to force someone to be truly happy? And at that point does it being "forced" or not really even matter since they are happy now? If i used the Geass on you and told you to "Be joyful the rest of your life", how exactly is that now 'take away your ability to enjoy yourself', ive done the exact opposite, now you'll enjoy yourself, forever. If you're concerned about morality: Who cares about "morality". That fact you even have a Geass means you're personality often most likely raises you above the notion of morality anyways. And as far as a Geass that forces joy upon someone: Morality is completely invalid, as far as im concerned. am i suppose to feel bad that i made you happy, for the rest of your life? I think not. As far as you're 'brain-dead' comment: Why? Because you said so? And what do you even mean by such a broad statement? Are you saying they would be considered "brain-dead" because they would be incapable of being unhappy? How is that "brain-dead"? Well, let me override your assumption and insert mine: They would not be "brain-dead" underPinkie's Geass, or happily jumping off buildings because they are happy about dying, or it 'seems like a good idea' as you said ect, they would still be sentient as they should be, just incapable of feeling negative feelings -- cheerful, even in the face of unbelievable despair. They can see despair, but not let it take control of them, or affect their performance or abilities to deduce a situation and solve it. And before someone makes the assumption they would lose the ability to see empathy due to being in a state of permanent happiness: They would not, its just that empathy will not turn into something that will deter their happiness. Just because you touch a blade, doesn't mean it's going to automatically cut you. And Pinkie's Geass would be able to instill the ability to touch the blade of sorrow, and not get cut. Point it at Celestia, and hear nothing, because she'd probably be immune to Geass. ...Why? Because Celestia reasons, right? Meh. Im not knocking your assumptions on a fictional Geass, but i figure Celestia would not be immune to such. If i've disregarded your rules in some way on how Geass's work or don't work, then owell. Oatmeal, are you crazy?! "Silly, you are already under my control."- Pinkie Pie Signature made by me, because resistance truly is futile, silly. Currently still undergoing maintenance. So no, Twilight Sparkle will not get a replica of Lelouch's Absolute Command Geass. Make it something original, something that fits the pony while also playing off wishes, and "Be careful what you wish for". But this is the MLP universe, so why shouldn't they have Geass' from the show? This would make it easier for the mane 6 to have Geass since theirs only so much you can do with the mind. Twilight- Ability to have others focus on knowledge, efficiency and logic over emotions, habits & personal biases. She'll get ponies to act in a rational manner, placing efficiency and organization above all else. She's essentially endowing other ponies with her motivations, building her own scholarly utopia where nothing is out of sync. Rarity- Ability to get others to focus on honing in their own beauty and helping others to do the same, to look and act and feel their best, whatever the cost. Building a society on elegance and class where everypony elevates themselves and eachtoher into looking and acting beautiful. Pinkie- Getting ponies to smile and be happy, enjoying themselves and having a good time, whether the situation warrants it or not. The problem here is that Pinkie is the most short sighted out of the mane 6 with her live for the moment attitude. She'll want everypony to be happy but doesn't realize that there are situations where a pony does need to be serious and that there are times to party and times to maintain the other aspects of your life. Dashie- Similar to C.C., but in this case, she'll have the ability to be adored and admired, a heroes welcome wherever she goes. Everypony will be a fan of her, no matter what she does and they'll be hypnotized to do just the right things to make her ego go though the roof. Flutters- Either the ability to unconsciously avoid Fluttershy, giving her space and drawing all attention away from her, or the ability to make ponies act more animalistic and primal so that Shy could communicate with them on a deeper level. AJ- A bit more challenging since AJ as a character already has everything she wants. It's also challenging since messing with a ponies mind already contradicts AJs values of Honesty. I guess she could influence desire, telling a pony how much they want or don't want something, that way she could control the demand for her farm. Anything for the Apple family right? If i've disregarded your rules in some way on how Geass's work or don't work, then owell. Celestia is immortal, like C.C., so I assumed she'd be immune. If not, then... that's not that big a deal, really. Remember, the Geass is a wish, a corrupted wish. Lelouch, the one who revered human will and individuality, gained the ability to subvert and crush it entirely. Charles, who hated lies, gained the ability to make others believe lies by altering memories. It makes one wonder what Clovis's, or Kallen's, or Schniezel's would be... but that's not what this topic is about. If Applejack had a lie-detecting geass, it would never turn off, and activate even on simple sentences or statements. If Applejack had a geass that forced ponies to tell the truth, they'd be incapable of white lies and also probably find trying to hide anything or spare someone's feelings to be painful, like struggling against your own mind. Perhaps the forced black-and-white-ness of having their minds forced to work in binary true/false AND only be capable of telling the truth would result in messing with the heads of the ponies she'd use it on, and overuse could lead to even the tiniest of problems becoming big enough to break friendships if the stubborn unyielding yes/no true/false nature was forced upon them.
