Remember Hurricane fluttershy? There is a background pony in one of the scenes that is bench pressing what I assume is a thousand pound weight with her wings. If that thousand represents Kilograms then she is benching over a ton with a pair of wings.

edit: Its been brought to my attention that each weight could be a 1000 pounds/kg instead of the whole bar so it would be 1 to 2.5 tons she would be benching

Just how strong are these ponies? Has someone done the math on the average strength of an mlp pony?

If we assume wing strength correlates with wingpower then, that means that Rainbow Dash, who clearly has the highest wingpower in that episode, might be able to bench multiple tons with her wings...

Ponies are easily well above Superhuman level based on that picture, Big Mac pulling casually pulling a building behind him, Maud Pie wrecking a large boulder and causing a nuke with just her pure strength, the ponies pulling the train in 'Over a Barrel' as they pulled a full train and it's cargo a full day and night non stop, Twilight lifting and carrying Tom through pure physical strength alone, Pegasus creating tornadoes through just wing power, and Celestia was shown to be strong enough to easily over power Big Mac in a hoof wrestling competition.

 

Yeah FIM ponies are insanely strong.

Nope.  Just 1000 I think.  They don't look like removable weights to me, so the whole barbell apparatus is probably what's being labeled.  It really doesn't look like 1000 pounds, though.  I mean, that thing would have to be lead or something for that to be true.  Maybe it's 1000 grams, or maybe someone labeled it as 1000 just to impress people and the blue pegasus is actually lifting a really wimpy weight and pretending it's heavy to get out of working too hard.  Sounds like something I would do.

Good examples include that the weapon of choice is apparently pies, according to Over the Barrel, you've got it explicitly stated that its earth ponies with the higher strength(stronger than other races, but I doubt stronger than say, a bull), Applejack having to outwit the Chimera instead of just beating it up(a creature that can't bite through wood),etc.

I don't see how any of the ponies could just beat up a huge monstrous Chimera with their bare hooves, even if Earth Ponies are supposedly the physically strongest of the pony types, so I don't think that is really a good example.

To be clear, you're saying that even in real life, a two hundred pound weight lifter shouldn't be scared of a four hundred pound lion just because it's only twice his weight?

 

Also remember that the Chimera has a snake tail with venomous fangs, horns on the goat head, and massive talons and a tiger head full of razor sharp teeth. I'm pretty sure Applejack has none of those things, thus putting her at a massive physical disadvantage in a straight one-on-one fight.

You missed the point. If AJ can lift 2,000-1,000 lbs, then she should be able to toss three Chimeras easily.

What's to say the Chimera can't lift even more? If a pony of Applejack's size can lift tons, then the Chimera might be able to lift four times what she can. Applejack would know her own capabilities and her opponent better than either of us considering that she knew the Chimera was in the route and came prepared with equipment to counter it.

Not downplaying, Maud definitely punched through a rock, but it wasn't like she was breaking reality with punches or anything(nuke punch)

I agree on that one. Maud seems to be in a league of her own strength wize. It wasn't until supercharged Twilight that we saw anyone else barreling through solid rock.

There are several problems with your assesment:

 

1. You're assuming the chimera's would weigh the same as a real world lion. For all we know, they could be double digit ton monsters or so as there's no evidence to indicate how much they weight and with the only clue being that AJ wasn't going to fight it in melee, indicating they must weigh heavy enough for her to not consider fighting it in melee worth it.

 

2. The Chimera had a snake's head, a goat's head, and a tiger's head, showing that she had the disadvantage of fighting a creature that can poison her, likely out headbutt her, and can maim her with her claws and teeth, adding even more reason for her to night fight it in melee.

2. The fact AJ didn't tried to fight it in melee and with the amount of dangerous heads it has should already be clue enough that it would've been a dangerous task for her to try. She went for the easiest and best option for her obviously. As for being unable to bite a wooden chair, true that would indicate it not having an especially strong bite however.
