I tried overclocking my GPU to see if I could get some more frames in FC4, and I'm surprised by the result. I could increase the clock speed from 850/925 boost to 1045 without even adjusting the voltage, and that gives me an extra 10-15 FPS on average. I bet I could go even farther if I wasn't bothered by the noise the cooling fan makes at even 60% RPM.

But the strange thing is that it doesn't seem to affect the stuttering at all. In fact, now it's even worse. The smoother framerate makes those occasional half-second pauses even more noticeable. I wonder what's causing this... it's definitely not the GPU.

I have that same problem and traced it back to the sustained boost clock. You have 780s, right?

So for Kepler, it'll drop down in increments of 13 MHz, starting at a temperature of 70C. If your overclock put you above 70 at your fan speed, your boost clock is going to jump around.

If that's what's happening, you could try cutting back on your offset to keep the temps down or modify your fan curve.

Mine was around 1180 - 1215 using a quiet curve. Sustained 1228, everything was smooth but it sounded like a leaf blower...

lol no, I have a 7950. :P

I was running in the high 60's with the overclock. The max temperature was like 71C. I could bring that down to the low 60's if I set the fan to 100%, but then it sounds like an airplane getting ready to take off. WHRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I was monitoring the frequency, though, and my overclock forced it to stay at 1045. At stock settings, I noticed that it often drops from 925 to 850. This is backwards. If anything, I'm thinking it might be a CPU bottleneck here. All of my cores run consistently at 70-80%, and sometimes run as high as 95%. Now, if something happens in the game and forces one core to go to 100% for just a little bit, that's going to slow everything else down... I think. Or does it? Could the load just be transferred to another core?

I could've sworn...

Okay, well someone here has em :P

Tried new drivers? Been a while since I messed with my 7850. It's not throttling or anything is it? You maxed the PowerTune slider (iirc, around 20%)..

I completely reinstalled Windows just last week, so the drivers are as new as can be.

There is a beta driver, which claims to improve performance in FC4. I might try that.

800-850 at stock is very telling. It's likely throttling due to hitting its TDP limit. I remember this being an issue. Setting the power limit to +20% should fix it. You can double check by leaving it stock and observing if it stays at 925.

That's exactly what it is, and with the power limit set to +20%, it stays at 925. I figured this out yesterday. That still doesn't help the stuttering, though. I'm begining to think it's completely GPU independent, because the stuttering still happens when I can reach a solid 70+ FPS on lower settings and a steady core clock.

Also, I tried the beta drivers, and that had no effect on performance. All it did was make the game crash after a few minutes of being OC'd.

I also remember tending to stay on drivers I knew worked because AMD, like ATI before them, enjoy breaking things for older cards.

Not gonna pass up a great deal (295x2 for half off, tempting) but their drivers... they've gotten better, but still.

You have a GTX 760, right? If so, try it on the NVIDIA preset, I'm curious how well it will fare.

Not entirely sure. It's a 550 watt, which is 50 watts more than I need to run the card. But it's also going on 5 years old, now. But it's also a Corsair. But I also have my CPU overclocked and overvolted.

Anyway, it's possible I could need a new PSU.

I'm not sure if it's the drivers that caused the crash or what. I was running it overclocked, so some instability is to be expected, right? And besides, my card has crashed in FC4 twice already. Enabling 2xMSAA caused my card to crash, and it did one other time yesterday just out of the blue. So, that's like once in thirty hours of playing.

Lol, it sounds like my card is pretty unstable to begin with, but it's not. The only game that makes my card crash consistently is Star Citizen. I can play less graphically intensive games for hundreds of hours with no crashes whatsoever.

I am tempted to go team green next time around, though.

You won't regret it. AMD still can't get a proper driver working meanwhile Nvidia has made DSR and Shadowplay xD

Shadowplay is the reason all of my future buys will be Nvidia, now that I've gotten a taste I can't game without it.

Could be the card going bad. I just don't think the PSU is to blame here. A 550W Corsair should be a fairly solid unit even if it is five years old.

If you're running 7, some people have had some luck unparking cores, but since this only happens when you oc, not sure if it'll help.

My card has had this crash on occasions ever since I first had it. I got Crysis 3 for free with the card, and that game made it crash once before I completed the game. With other games like Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite, it never crashed.

Also, I have a Phenom II x4, so my cores *can't* be parked. I also had this same problem with my 5770, and it was fixed with a driver issue. It's the same infamous "vertical line crash." It's not a defective card; a lot of Radeons have this problem since the HD 5xxx series.

Now as much as everyone bashes AMD for their drivers, I've used nvidia in the past and still had problems. They're also more expensive, and I like to support the underdog wherever possible.

Had a similar problem with my 7850 where the screen just went to a grayish grid. It took them months to put out a decent driver for the 7xxx. And then there were the multi monitor issues.

I like AMD and their recent cost slashing in response to the 900s got me thinking about a 290X, but eh.

Wait. Dual monitor issues?

I run a dual monitor setup. Not eyefinity, but two separate displays.

Tried overclocking my GPU. Still couldn't get more than a cinematic 31FPS in Skyrim. But I did get 20 more frames per second in other games.

?

I only have a 750ti and it nearly maxes out Skyrim at 60FPS(in exteriors)

Question time(two actually)

I'm having trouble with Age of Empires III, it's got horrible FPS despite the face it's only using 30% of my CPU and 50% of my GPU.

I'm getting horrible lag spikes in Metro 2033 that make it borderline unplayable.

I forgot to mention I was trying an ENB. RealVision. Without an ENB or a performance ENB I get 60FPS.

That explains it, for a minute there I was going "I know Daring has a better GPU than me, he shouldn't be getting half the FPS I do"

Yeah, my bad. I probably shouldn't try fucking with ENBs until I can get my hands on a better card. xD

Oh well, a few years or this one breaks. Whichever comes first.

Mouse cursor corruption. It was fixed, though it apparently happened on 5/6xxx series Radeons as well.

Other issue was flickering on multiple monitors. Had to do with memory bandwidth and sync issues across different monitors. Their solution was to up the memory and core clock to deal with the extra load -- idling high at the desktop.

Not sure how it is now, moved to GTX 670 and it idles low at the desktop with two or even three monitors connected.

Hmm... well, I don't have any of those peoblems. Never did. The only problems I've had with these AMD cards are the vertical line grey screen crashes.

With my old 8600GT, I had all sorts of graphics glitches and driver problems, but none of those caused my entire system to fail. Problems were more frequent, but they were minor annoyances compared to something as severe as a BSoD type of thing requiring a hard reboot.

Hey because I don't know how to @Lunatic Envy and make you know, I would like to ask of how do I custom flash my GPU bios?

Yeah, it seemed like the people with the most problems were running Eyefinity or CF (or both :toldya: ) setups. Not to say I haven't had issues with NVIDIA, just fewer.

There's a post here with info on editing/flashing your BIOS: http://www.overclock.net/t/1467851/nvidia-maxwell-kepler-bios-editing-thread-gtx-2xx-to-9xx-now-supported

Curious, why do you want to flash it?
