Phoenix Flair 332 October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 (edited) So I was just browsing on Deviant Art, checking out some MLP artists and whatnot, and I noticed a lot of them make "adoptable" OC's. Now this just seems bizarre to me. I get that you might want to commission an artist to draw your OC, but why would you outsource the entire creation of an original character? Is that how it works? I dunno. Have any of you ever adopted an OC or made one that was or can be adopted? How does that work? What do you guys think about the process of adopting OC's? Flutter's lover <3 8,206 October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 (edited) This has been done in the Furry fandom for a long while, and other fandoms I'm sure, but to me it seems like a silly thing. Especially when the artist says "Your'e free to change whatever you want on them" . If I'm "adopting" a character, I can do whatever the hell I wan to do it, it's mine now, not yours.Besides, if I'm gonna change something on it....why don't I just make up my own? Which, to me personally, is what I'd do vs using someone elses design. Some artists even charge money for "adopting" these. It's bizarre. Not to mention, there can only be so many OCs before some of them start looking the same. The only reason I can see of getting an "adoptable" is to fit it into a story or other art of some sort. Otherwise the idea of an adoptable, to me, is kinda silly. But even then, while making a story, I'm gonna make my own characters...or if I'm making visual art, I'm gonna put in my own character ideas...not someone elses. Pat.Rio.T. 305 October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 What if they did everything, including the backstory? I might actually enjoy making those. (Avatar drawn by Inky) My OCs: Pat.Rio.T. & River Serene
aoEAF2FBvC0MIo2Q 3,673 October 18, 2014 Share October 18, 2014 (edited) Making an OC in general seemed more like a personal endeavor where the person has to figure out how to integrate and interrelate the different traits (appearance traits, the author's own ideas and impressions, personality traits and backstory for that I can name) into a solid, cohesive whole. Though I guess not everyone's experienced or interested enough to make such whole characters and need to start somewhere. Or maybe they don't want to put in the effort and just carry around an avatar or ponysona that they like. Or maybe if someone needs disposable characters for a story, have someone else go through the trouble of making some quick designs. Admittedly, this is mostly speculation. It just seems so impersonal... Making a request to someone where you only have a description is still somewhat personal since the person does have a look and feel in mind. SunsetShadow 37 November 3, 2014 Share November 3, 2014 I never even considered that but its a good thing for people like me I guess because I'm not very creative anymore. It took me like forever to create mine but I'm yet to finish my backstory. It could be a good thing but its healthy to do things for your self but that's just what I think. Castle_Cross 331 November 3, 2014 Share November 3, 2014 I've adopted 2 but on draw cast, it's like deviant art but in cellphones xD, it's kind of fun sometimes
Invincible 2,091 November 3, 2014 Share November 3, 2014 Eh. I'm not much of an artist or a writer, but a character iv'e created that has been regurgitated and modified extensively after iv'e placed it for adoption appears like a waste of time to me. My OCs for Roleplay purposes: o Lit Fuse (http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/lit-fuse-r6608) o Dust Devil (http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/dust-devil-r7357)

Tao 7,917 November 4, 2014 Share November 4, 2014 Sometimes I can see if you get say well tired of the fandom and put a lot of time into a of(s) and want them to live out, i can see giving them away to someone else long as they keep key traits of them.
