Did Lauren Faust get inspiration from Digimon when creating gen 4?

Think about it.

- All the heroes are young

- Each hero represents a virtue

- Each hero has a special item they get. Each hero's item gets it's power from an episode where they learn a lesson.

- Each hero's item ends up getting activated (although in Digimon, they're activated one episode at a time for each Digimon).

- 2 of the main characters have a younger biological sibling (although in Digimon, the younger siblings are part of the main group)

- Both have a villain who ends up reforming (Ken from Digimon Adventure 2, and of course, Discord, from MLP)

- 3 different types of Digimon (data, vaccine, virus), 3 different Pony races (Earth, Pegasus, Unicorn). Although the pony races were established long before Digimon I think.

Maybe I'm thinking too much :)

While that is a good theory, and I did draw parallels to the shows myself ( I loved Digimon in the day and it still has a special place for me), but if I remember correctly, Faust based FiM on stories she came up for her own MLP toys. I don't know about the Anime influence myself; I do know she looked at old-school Fantasy books like LOTR, Chronicles of Narnia, and Alice in Wonderland for inspiration though.

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees.
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still receive your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

I don't know. I've never seen Digimon. I've heard it's good but I never saw it.

Are...are you kidding. You've seen one of the most well known anime? Like not even a clip?

How?

The things you just described are very very common and can be found in pretty much dozens of shows/cartoons/movies out there. Siblings, representing virtues, items of power, reformed villains... That's like all of shonen mangas

@, as the discussion of your thread relates to Friendship is Magic, I have moved it from 'Sugarcube Corner' to 'Show Discussion' where I feel it is better suited.

I'm uncertain whether Lauren took inspiration from Digimon, but the parallels are apparent. My sister cited many of your examples when she compared the two (she suggested that my love for Digimon perhaps explains my love for FIM on account of their similarities).

There are a lot of tropes in Mlp that are similar with anime. Personally I see a lot of parallels between Mlp and Higurashi.

Chuunibyou Alert.

I see Sakura Trick has much more similarities with MLP. Six girls vs Mane six and what have you, and they're both yuri...

LOL, kay I was asking for that >.>

No but seriously Higurashi has so many parallels with mlp its scary.

Its got the tom boy who lives with her siblings and grandmother and leads them in the family business

The girl who represents and works with something akin to a deity to save their people  through the power of friendship (I shit you not)

The fun loving bubbly girl that wants everyone to smile and be happy, smile and have fun, but can go psycho on a dime

The sweet shy girl who becomes frightening when the object of her affection is threatened or she is rejected by it

The fact they live in a rural village outside of major cities but has ties with some major power and influence

And the overarching story that friendship and forgiveness is the magic that can overcome any obstacle

I am talking about both series at the same time here, sure there are differences (of course there are, one is effing scary at some parts) but the similarities are to numerous for me to write off.

Digimon, at least the anime, is kinda like the Pokémon manga (although it doesn't have gore or cursing). The earlier parts of the anime are pretty lighthearted, but when they get to the Dark Masters arc, thinks get turned on their heads, and there is a lot of mention of destruction and death. Digimon Adventure 02 was pretty dark as well, and I won't spoil anything for you, but the plot is extremely good, and has many twists. Digimon is basically a more mature version of Pokémon that isn't afraid to tackle the big issues. If you watch it, I recommend watching the subbed version when watching Digimon Adventure 01, because the English version ruins the mood with cheesy jokes at the worst possible moments, and the Japanese writing and VAs are far superior. If watching Digimon Adventure 02, Tamers, or any other season other than Digimon Adventure 01, I can definitely vouch for the English versions of those, because either another company did those, or they learned from their lessons and stopped trying to cram so many jokes in each episode (still plenty of jokes from Terriermon though, but those jokes don't really ruin scenes that are meant to be serious, unlike in Digimon Adventure 01).

tl;dr

English dub (especially Digimon Adventure 01) if you prefer comedy

Japanese version if you prefer drama and good voice acting

I think the real question is did she get inspiration from DBZ for the finale of Season 4? lol

Season 4 is way after Lauren left the show.
