It was another day in Equestria.  The sun was shining, the birds were singing; everything was as it should be.  Everypony went about their business as usual, whether it was putting on a show for other ponies, delivering mail, writing or playing beautiful music, or just visiting with other ponies.

Then, for seven ponies, that changed within a fraction of a second.

In the middle of whatever daily activities they were performing, they were yanked out of their place in space-time, and dragged through a vortex, their surroundings changing rapidly from natural beauty to the inside of a downtrodden building.  One at a time, not all simultaneously, they appeared with a noise similar to static on the radio in a large, open building that appeared to have been forgotten about for at least a year.  Boxes were stacked in several corners, the ceiling was high, and the room was large.

Once the seven of them were there, there was a moment of silence, which all of them took to realize what was happening.

Then, there was another static-noise, and a piece of paper that seemed to have writing on it appeared in the air next to them, slowly floating down to the ground.

“What surprises me most?  Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.  Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.  And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

Nightlight's eyes widened as the pages he'd been reading seemed to gradually vanish, as winds began to swirl around him. He looked up to see, to his shock, the rest of the world was also blurring and fading away into something else. A high-pitched frequency sounded, causing him to cover his ears and close his eyes.

What... how...?

When he opened his eyes, he was in a downtrodden general-use building lacking any gracious quality.

A-am I...? N-no! I can't be dreaming, this is all too real. He stared at a box in the corner, looked away, then looked back to see it was still there. Dreams are fluid and inconsistent... I was reading a story about mythical creatures, so I couldn't have been pulled into my book... Where am I...? How did I get here...?

Nightlight sighed, shaking his head. "My friends say I'm insane, but this is beyond even me..." He trotted over to window, noting the dreary, gray clouds (where it had been sunny only a couple minutes before) and gasped. "What in the name of Cel--" he stopped himself from swearing by clamping a hoof over his mouth. "By the stars..." Outside the building there was a gravel road with cars driving along it. "I don't think I'm in Equestria anymore... B-but isn't that...?!" He pointed a shaking hoof at the all-too familiar violet mountainside. The floating city of Canterlot... It's even closer here than where I was before... His musings were interrupted by static noise and a bright light...

Having just returned from a job, Mirror Slash looks around his Canterlot apartment. "What a waste, always paying to get something Stupid dumb." As he goes to his kitchen, he hears a static like sound and turns, only to see nothing but flash of light. Sucked in, he lands on a box, crushing it beneath him and Seeing another with him just before another flash of light appears.

Steel was laying in a roof, holding a pair of binoculars to his eyes. He was gathering information on his newest target, when he heard a static like sound. Before he could react he was gone hurdling though space time, he landed in the far corner. Steel stood lowering his binoculars he began to look around, when he heard the static again he turned looking to the center of the room pulling out his daggers.

Nightlight gasped as he saw other ponies entering the room the same way he had. Is this some kind of trap? Am I being surrounded? He glanced nervously from one pony to the next, backing into an unoccupied corner, Canterlot still in his view. The princess... She must know what's going on! ...But these new arrivals are blocking my only exit... Nightlight shrank to his haunches, watching the other ponies for sudden movement, and hoping they would leave him alone.

Sinusoid is playing an intensely loud solo on his contrabass clarinet as he begins to hear the static. "What is that noise?" he asks rhetorically before answering the question himself; "White noise, stereo, around pitch C5. I can't seem to find the source..." He looks around nervously as the noise quickly grows louder, and he begins to shake neurotically; then his vision gets blurry. "This seems off; it must be an illusion generated temporal and occipitally, or I may be about to die." He clutches the two-meter-tall instrument, but it falls through his body to his disbeleif, and everything goes black.

Sinu wakes up in a warehouse, still shaking. "This must be a lucid dream; I have to find out." He says, and takes a timepeice out of his vest. He looks at it, looks away, and looks back; the time remains the same. "This can't be possible... Unless, It could be a magically generated teleport; But where am I?" He looks around, and sees several other ponies throughout the room. He asks all of the collectively; "Excuse me, but do you know where I am?"

Nightlight's eyes widened and lit up. If that pony doesn't know where this place is, then everypony else must have been randomly teleported here like I was! Nightlight slowly stood up, debating weather or not to answer the pony that spoke. We have a higher chance of solving this mystery if we do it together... Nightlight took a deep breath, insecurity making him nervous. He cleared his throat, making eye-contact with the white-furred pony. "I'm not exactly sure where we are, but..." he pointed his shaking hoof once again at the violet mountain visible through the window. "I can see Canterlot from here."

Stepping forward, Mirror Slash looks in the pointed direction. "My apartment is there, I got teleported a few miles? What the hell." Taking a closer look, he sees that it looks different, he can't quite place it but he sees something off about the city. "Any of y'all think something is off here?"

Sinu looks out of one window, and says; "I notice that Canterlot has a few new buildings that seem to be constructed with concrete and metal. I haven't been here for several months, but that seems to be a lot of superfluous construction for such a short time period." He stops talking for a moment to look around like something is behind him; "I think that it would be a good idea to look outside and find out what has happened." With that, he walks to the door and opens it. After marveling at the new "futuristic" additions to the city for a while, he turns around and says; "If you think that what has just happened is strange, come and look at this."

Zephyr shook her head as she adjusted herself to the unfamiliar atmosphere, awoken by the muffled voices that found her ears. Groggily she opened her eyes, only to be greeted by the silhouettes of dark walls rising up all around her. Upon further inspection the diminutive mare began to notice the forms of other ponies, moving around the murky darkness of their enclosure like ghosts. Groaning she began the harrowing struggle of standing up.

"Oh this is worse than the time I got hit by a bus" she mumbled to herself as her hooves shakily found their footing beneath her. "I may have tried some freaky stuff with my brothers, but this tops 'em all!"

Starchase was, for the lack of a better word, scared. His head darted around, seeing his new environment for the first time, all a dark blur to him. He felt compelled to curl into a ball but slowly decided to get up and stop being a wuss, letting his eyes adjust. His curiosity got the better of him and he took small steps. He looked up to be faced with a high ceiling akin to those he'd seen in a cathedral or town hall.

"Hello?" His voice bounced off the walls. He shook himself out of his initial shock and began to wander around. He deduced he was in an abandoned building of some sort, left for nature to reclaim. But everything else remained a mystery to him.

Since the building was on the outskirts of Ponyville, just barely, one could see the lights of the small city from the door or open window (It was nighttime).  'A few new buildings' was putting it lightly, as the previously small town was now sporting several 10 to 15 story buildings, as well as other structures entirely unfamiliar to the group.  The sound of automobiles thrummed gently in the distance, also unfamiliar to the ponies assembled.  The gravel road outside the building was lit with electric streetlamps.  It was, overall, very strange and different.

Meanwhile, inside the building, the note fluttered to the floor, untouched.

Steel sighed, he was watching the other ponies as they conversed. He flapped his wings, lifting a few inches off the ground, and fly over to the paper he put up on dragger and kept the other in a defensive position as he picked up the paper. He looked at it reading

"I've seen these lights in their experimental phases; instead of running on chemical combustion to generate light, they use the movement of energy through a piece of wire, called 'electricity'" Sinu explains, oblivious to whether the other ponies were listening or not; "And those incredibly tall structures look like they're made of solid stone, but are in fact composed of countless miniscule stones held together with an adhesive. In theory, they could support many times more weight than the standard wooden scaffolding that we use." He then looks back to the room and scans it for anything that may seem out of place, something that he can do quite well, and notices a piece of paper on the floor. He walks to it, on his way straightening some boxes that are at a slightly different angle from the other ones in the stack, and steps back as a graphite-colored pegasus crosses his path to pick up the paper. He hesitantly walks up to the pegasus and asks; "Excuse me; could I see that note too?"

The front of the note reads, in curling, handwritten print:

Six to save Equestria
from a death undeserved
Six to stop the story
Before it is finished
Six to confront fate
And undo the work of one

One to make a crucial choice
One to crush all beneath their hooves
One to wipe out all that is known
Or to save it

At the moment of choice
will the right one be made?

I am the Gatekeeper.
I will be watching.

On the other side of the piece of paper, there seems to be a newspaper clipping attached via transparent tape.  The headline:  "Witnesses insist disaster is the result of Unicorns".

It goes on to say that witnesses had seen a unicorn and 'a bunch of monsters' fighting near the building, but the writer says that this story had little to no credibility, and police suspect that a gas leak caused the large explosion that had resulted in the collapse of a Ponyville building.  (Fortunately, nopony had been injured; the building was evacuated by a brave, well-prepared citizen.)  It was most likely a mass hallucination, perhaps bought on by the gas that had been leaking.

"OK, ominous much? That note mentions seven, there are seven of us. So my guess is that one of us is gonna screw everything up, how fun. Six of us to save this place? Soooo, who plans on paying me, and how much. Sorry, fate of the world or whatever, I still don't like being dragged around randomly."

"Why is it that so many things need to be written in poem form? It seems that it would simply make interpreting the message more difficult." Sinu says after reading the note; "So, my guess is that we have to work together to reverse the effects of one moron, so we can save equestria, and failure could ruin everything. I hate pressure like this, but I get this urge to 'save equestria'. And this news article, it's lacking consistency and doesn't make sense. Does anypony else agree that the formatting is terrible?"

Zephyr, still feeling the adverse effects of being dragged through some sort of wormhole, leaned over to get a better view of the paper. "I don't remember hearin' anything about a collapsed building or gas leak around Ponyville, this must be really old or somethin'. What's the date say?" she asked as she squinted down at the news article.

Steel thought for a moment"so six to save eqestria and one to make a crucial choice... I'm guessing that the choice will be made by a unicorn" steel said more to himself than any pony. Steel flew higher up, so he'd be out of reach to the others. Steel didn't know any of these ponies and didn't trust them.

Nightlight gasped as he turned to look out the opposite-facing window to see all the strange buildings and roadways. "I-Isn't this Twilight Sparkle's hometown, Ponyville? Wh-what..." All he could do was shake his head as he looked on in dismay and confusion. He payed close attention to the white pony's ramblings of the current technology, and understood most of it. His eyes then fell to the note the intelligent pony was requesting to see. Nightlight wondered why he hadn't seen it before. He was wary of the pegasus with daggers, but he managed to tentatively walked around the others to read the paper. His eyes widened at what he saw.

Six to save Equestria... There are six of us here... WE are Equestria's last hope?! Nightlight bit his lip. Th-there must be some mistake... Why not Twilight and her friends? Why couldn't--? Nightlight stared into space, realizing his crush and her companions could be in grave peril.

Nightlight was snapped back to reality by "I'm guessing that the choice will be made by a unicorn". He jumped, then stiffened. 'Disaster the result of unicorns', and one to make a crucial choice... A-am I the only unicorn here...? Nightlight frantically looked around, then sighed, relieved to see the white pony he'd spoken to before was indeed a unicorn.

Nightlight felt anxiety build inside him, as the task ahead was great, and he didn't even know how to begin it, much less accomplish it with five other unfamiliar, potentially dangerous ponies. And what of Twilight and her friends? ...What of the princesses?? Nightlight's eyes widened as he came to the conclusion something terrible must have happened to all the royalty in Equestria. He shook his head, speaking softly, more to himself than the others, but still audibly, "Why... why us? What are we supposed to do...?" ...Poetry... who could've written this...? Nightlight remembered hearing the story of the day Twilight and her friends had vanquished a stone being that had come to life. One who enjoyed riddles... "...Discord." Nightlight's eyes narrowed, looking around at the other ponies. He claimed with confidence, "I believe this is the work of Discord, the master of chaos." His confidence faded and he looked down at his hooves. "Twilight and the others are in terrible danger..."

"The date is..." Sinu scans the paper to find a timestamp, and stares for a moment after he finds it; "Almost two

hundred years from 'now'; this must be some sort of temporal rift. I know that twilight was capable of traveling short distances in time as a unicorn, but to travel this far in time would require magic more powerful than that of an alicorn. Now, that brings up the idea that 'the gatekeeper' could be either an alicorn or a user of dark magic; probably both."

"...I still say it's Discord." Nightlight muttered, not looking up. His ears flickered, and he sat down on the floor. Who is the gatekeeper...? The keeper of gates that open to different points in time... He said quietly, "We should call him the 'I'm-going-to-shove-you-through-a-gate-and-if-you-don't-like-it-then-too-bad' Keeper." He huffed, somewhat frustrated.

"Wait a second... Didn't you hear me a moment ago? I said Twilight is in danger! We need to find out what this disaster is and prevent it so we can save her!"

"I already heard what you had said, and I completely understand; Discord may have been the one to cause whatever damage that the letter speaks of, but he would not have sent us here to SAVE equestria." Sinu quickly says to ensure that the other ponies realize that he knows what he's talking about. "But regardless, if this whole thing is true, then I highly suggest that we step outside to investigate this future Ponyville and try to find out what has gone wrong." As he says this, he appears to be completely calm and confident, except for the fact that he was noticably shaking due to the anxiety created by the situation.

"Look, I doubt good old discord is behind this. Like you said, he wouldn't send us to save the world. Second, I doubt twilight is even I'm trouble, nor any of the six. We are in the future, 200 years. Few ponies live that long, and I know one of them would never allow this to go on this long. No, not a primcess, I doubt you know of him." He dash calmly, looking to his training to assess the situation. "We won't get anything done just standimg here though."

Nightlight sat in silence, his eyes glossed over, staring into space. "You mean, where we are right now, Twilight is... she's..." dead? He couldn't bring himself to finish out loud. "I thought alicorns lived forever..." Nightlight couldn't focus on the important task at hand knowing that his crush, the pony he'd been dying to meet since he'd heard about her, had passed away in the few seconds it took to transport him here.

Maybe... maybe there was a chance to get back to reality? To the old Equestria, where Twilight was indeed, still alive? Either way, Nightlight refused to let her legacy die. Her actions would live on through him, as he set out to save Equestria from its dire fate.
