I am going to ship out to boot camp pretty soon, and after I am in Basic Training for a few weeks I am going to ask if anyone in my platoon is a Brony.

Got any advice for asking Army folk if they are bronies? or any advive for asking them? (I am going to wait at least 2.25 months before I ask, so they get to know me.. but you guys got any advice?)

Hmmm try to see if they recognize references, then try to slowing make a display showing that you are one. That how I came out the Brony closet and how I got a bunch of bronies to come out too. But you're playing a dangerous game my friend rennet that.

A brony friend of mine is in the Marines. He treats it like the old "Son't ask don't tell" thing. If he admitted to being one, they'd make fun of him for it.

I'm sure that if you are talking to somebody who is, I dunno, more internet culture savvy they probably wouldn't care if you ask them but I'm not sure about anyone else. My step father is an old marine from the Vietnam era, and when he saw me watching the show he looked at me as if I was the biggest sicko on the planet. Can't wait till he eventually sees me on an MLP forum!

I don't care about being made fun of. Thats really not a problem for me. I am still rethinking this though XD. I don't want what other people think to stop me from being who I am.

I have put a lot of thought into this over the last few days, and I do agree I would have to be very careful about the matter o-o.... Proper planning. I have a few tactics in mind, but I at least wanna make sure I have a decent image going already before I try anything like that.

Everyone in my Future Soldier training already know about it, but don't really think anything of it. (They see my Rainbow Dash keychain all the time) But I see them all the time, so they know who I am, my personality, etc.

Ah well, I'll see what happens XD. You guys will probably hear about the results one day.

I wouldnt stereotype that to the armed forces, i have many mates in the air force who are devout bronies and pegasisters. Im not saying go up to anybody and hugging them while crying out "love and tolerate!" but dont assume the worst of people either. My advice to NOvaBioField is to just pop in references about bronyhood, just little things and see if they are picked up on. The way your planning on it sounds like a safe bet.

You might want to be a bit careful about that. Normal haters are okay to deal with, but it's much harder to ignore a hater you're going to be living with for months. You don't want any tension/hatred between you and your comrades, considering you might be fighting in combat together.

I'm non-combat.

I have pretty much given up on this entire idea, unless a legitimate opportunity presents itself. Knowing me its gonna slip out anyway X_x. I already tried to keep it a secret from my friends and my dad but that did NOT go well at all XDDD. Everyone and their dog knows now.

Most people don't care if you aren't pushy about it, if you don't make a big deal of it they probably won't either. Of course in light of the above comment hiding it would be no small task, but even if they do find out you could always remind them that it is just a TV show.

Be careful with that. Judge on whether or not to do that based on how they seem to act in general. It's impossible to classify people in the Army as "mean" people, that's like saying all lawyers are crooks, or all police officers are apathetic about their jobs -- you're going to need that "2.25 months" of time to be able to put them in either the accepting group, or bashing group. And then, if you're in a group of at least 50% accepting people, start throwing out a few "20% cooler"s.

You'll know how to go about it. Just get to know everyone first, and see where it goes from there. Chances are, you'll get more people to join if you tell them about the user-generated content, rather than the show.

Actually, that might be the only way to get people to join...

Anyways, show them cool pictures or videos (like movie trailer parodies). That's usually how I introduce myself as a brony to others.

Good luck!

If you are doing basic training soon, it is generally advised to remain as aloof as possible. Military doctrine generally frowns upon fraternization between soldiers during recruit training and indoctrination, so it's best to keep pony-related discussions in the bag until you are a real soldier who has earned his rank. Then, when you are serving at a military installation, it is perhaps safer to ask your fellow soldiers and officers if they are bronies or not.

I know a fellow on another MLP forum who claims to be an active colonel in the air force. Claims to fly in an A-10 squadron in Georgia. I also know of another guy on another MLP forum who claims to be an infantry sergeant in the army.
