OC: It's Dangerous to Go Alone![/cliché]

I had a moment of inpiration! And let it stew for a couple of days... and then it started to rot... 3 weeks later, I had an opening in my schedule and decided to play with this. It's mainly for me to see how colors go together with the trial-and-error freedom of a computer that I haven't had for so long.

Now, I'm pretty convinced this is terrible. It was soooooo rushed that it's not even funny. There are so many coloring/shading/line art errors here that I will now hide my face in shame :( Good thing I'm not an artist!

Anyway.

SO KAWAII DESU

This is my OC, beta name Iris Azule. She's... well, me. Whatever I am. Except for a guy. Err.

For those who ask, her cutie mark is a Koch snowflake with 2 iterations. Dem fractals.

Feel free to rip me apart. I would like to get better, or at least as far as a I can without any distinct talent or ability. Heh.

If you're willing to take on any criticism, then that's pretty brave for a beginner. Hats off to you. ;)

I will admit that this isn't the greatest piece, but it still has its strengths. I do like the vividness of the colours, although they should be dulled a little bit.

Your main problems that you should work on are linework and pony anatomy. As you pointed out the linework is pretty bad, since it looks wobbly. Depending on what you're using you should always start with a linework tool. The more you get the hang of it the better. Or, if you have a tablet, you should use that over any linework tool as you have more control on the pen pressure. Linework with a tablet takes more practice, but the more you do so the better your results are. Using a linework tool tends to give more cleaner results, however.

Pony anatomy is pretty easy to pull off once you get ahold of the basics. Tutorials are always a must if you want to learn new things about art as you grow faster that way. Here's two tutorials I recommend for you. However, do keep in mind that this works best for specific kinds of art programs, as I'll be talking about now...

You should consider is a good art program. MS Paint isn't the greatest due to the lack of layers and options. I'd highly recommend Paint Tool SAI as it has everything you need for an art program, from linework managing to effects. Good luck!

That's super adorable! It's not a terrible drawing, it's pretty good!

If you used MS paint, it's much easier to just be lazy and use the curve tool for the linework.

I fail to see how that is lazy. The curve tool gives off cleaner and better results most of the time compared to using a simple brush tool. It's also great for beginners who don't have a tablet.

HOW DARE YOU INSULT MY MASTERPIECE YOUR OPINION DESERVES TO DIED IN FLAMES

Hehe, of course I'm open to criticism. How else am I supposed to get better? I commend your bravery...

I used the GIMP, which should be capable of a lot more than I've done with it. The picture was actually pencildrawn, then I took a photo of said drawing and after several failed attempts to extract the pencil lines I decided to trace the whole thing with the pencil tool using a touchpad on my netbook... so thing just went from bad to worse as I got more and more frustrated with thr darn thing. Now, my question is, is there a better way to extract a pencil drawing?

And again, thank you for the pointers! Just like the old saying goes (with some leeway)-

"Así no se construyó Roma, idiota"

Good, gimp is far better than ms paint. XD

Hmm, a better way to extract lines? Well as a tablet owner, I would say it's hard to do decent lineart without one. If you wanted to make your lineart by hand, that is. But instead of buying an expensive tablet you should probably use curve tools and/or try vectoring your drawing?

You should only ever buy a tablet if you're 100% serious about becoming an artist because they're super expensive ;-;
