"Thats all well and good, but what happens when the leader dies? it seems like your troops would panic, unable to think for themselves,  see heres the thing, great leaders are strong and full of courage, and know how to lead troops we train that into the soldiers, they wont question the leader because of his or her strength" the captain swung at the last manticore, but got hit by the swipe and sent him flying, losing grip of his sword, his armor saves his live and in retaliation he zooms and drop kicks the manticore face stunning it long enough for him to grab his sword and stabs it in the face, killing it "hmm, im going to have to mark off points for getting hit...what do you think?"

"Each soldier has a IQ test that determines his possibility of thinking. If the commanding officer dies another from the regiment will take his place in extreme cases. Usually another officer is commissioned to the regiment during battle. And our soldiers know nothing of panicking, they would either receive a new leader or join a nearby unit. And besides, no matter how strong a leader is, a speeding bullet will make him just as dead. Let me in that ring with my own weapon and ill take down 5 of them in seconds. As i am not accustomed to these battles, i do not know what the norms for points are."

"Well, there are no points per say, but its just an evaluation on his performance, he did very well disarming the first one and he killed the second one easily with grace, very impressive, but one got a hit on him, if it werent for his armor he would of been killed instantly, and those things are just wild ones we captured 2 days ago and starved, trained manticores are much more deadly and wear armor, how do you think he did?"

"That... Was grace? Im sorry, but that seemed pretty brutish to me... It is remarcable that he did that, again im not really used in seeing this sort of... Entertaiment... So id good, but again i find killing three beasts like that pretty well done, however i have no idea how others have acomplished."

"Well, ive seen battles lasted longer, Ive seen shorter, a lot die, one applicant killed all 3 but then sucummbed to the poison from a sting he got at the beginning of the fight, but just because he kills all 3 doesnt mean he gets promoted, for example, one warrior spent the entire fight in the air only coming down to quickly stab and then fly back up, the fight was long and drawn out, his tactic wasnt cleaver, and showed no courage, so i declined him, but this guy has potential, so I think he should be promoted, if you want, you can go down there and interview him"

The most they've done regarding foreign affairs is provide some aid to those in need, and it's very rare that they do so. But I'm most interested in the princess selecting you. He smiled. "Well of course. But even if no one new she was my mother they would stall gather from miles to eat her cooking. You would wear that it was made by a saint." He chuckled.  Just then a older mare came towards them. Her mane was brown with streaks of gray and she was wearing a plane but nice dress with an apron with one or two stains on it.

 

"You speak too highly of me, figlio." She said in a thick (Italian) accent while hugging Malachi around the shoulders.  He hugged her back with one arm. "I can't help it, ma. You're cooking's the best." She smiled and playfully smacked his chest with a hoof. "Oh stop. Since you're hear it must means you haven't eaten yet. I bet you even skipped lunch again."

 

He shrugged, "I had work to do." She frowned. "Sciocchezza. You need to keep you're strength up. I don't care how old you are you're still growing." Malachi sighed and stood. "Ma, I'd like to introduce you to our guests from they other nations I told you about.  Kaiser Magnum Howitzer of Abendstern and King Ludwig Hoofsburg of Ponssia. "

 

Her eyes went wide as she whipped off her apron and gave them a polite bow. "Saluti, il signore. Welcome to my ristorante."  Her eyes narrowed at Malachi as she smacked his chest again and spoke to him in another language. She didn't sound very happy. Then she walked off. He chuckled. "Sorry, she's a little mad that I surprised her by bring you two over without telling her. She'll be back with the food in a bit. I bet she's gonna treat us to something really special."

And if your assassin becomes the ruler, wouldn't that mean your guards or whomever would immediately have to stop persuing them once they accomplished the task? Or do they serve only to protect the nation and you have to protect yourself by personally hiring others to protect you?"

@Skullbuster, "You'll have to educate me sometime on this Lixin for it baffles me. And trust me, I've witnessed something similar to know how horrific it can be. A pal of mine years back during one of our training courses got seriously injured. The goal was to capture a flag at the end of a hallway designed to be like a maze in how it was filled with debree. All while unicorns were casting beams at you. The beams themselves wouldn't actually do much to you if you were hit, but they wrecked havoc on everything else. Anyway one of the beams struck a clay pot right by his head and the pieces of course tore into him. He wasn't directly struck in the eye, but one of the shards sort of got behind it and made it pop out. He survived the ordeal, but he wasn't the same after that. Not like upset, bit he craved the danger. Before that he always velt safe. When he learned that things could harm him he took up the challenge for life to throw what it could at him, and now serves in a unit that handles only extreme situations. He actually holds the record of helping kill more dragons than anypony else. He's earned four Iron Crosses total for it. It's funny in a way since I switched over to the navy so I could relax more. We still talk he and I." he said smiling.

"Luckily for me, the knife was too short to damage my brain so I was able to pull it out and slit my attackers throat" she said rather calmly as if it hardly affected her, "occupational hazard I guess" she sighed a bit then perked up " so when do I get to meet your leader?"

"A monarchy... Since we will undoubtedly be meeting with your king, is there anything we should know about him?"

 

"Hm.. That sounds very equal and good. We haven't really met anyone for years... So having alliance would be great... Just make sure you will not leave us alone with troubles, like our last allies did years before." Blue Crystal said, while remembering those times.

Silver Gleam smiled radiantly. "I'm glad you think so. Rest assured that we will not abandon you in your time of need. Now, that we've agreed upon that, I have another proposal. I have been told that no unicorns live in this land; I would be delighted to help solve this situation. We would be willing to emigrate some unicorns from our land to your land. These unicorns would follow your laws and learn your customs, they would become your subjects. In return, we would want some of your earth ponies to help us establish a farming colony to help us feed ourselves."

The airship descended into port. A formation 20 soldiers stopped beside it and saluted. The port was full of ponies. Giant cranes loaded ships or even picked them out the water. massive cargo ships left port regularly. Soldier patrols marched regularly while others manned the defenses. The entire coastline had been highered and fortified, making the harbors the only land-able places by sea. This was built in order to have an edge from a naval enemy. Each 100m of sea wall were followed by a fort, manned by 100 soldiers. The walls and the forts were all armed with cannon batteries, ready to blast any incoming hostiles. A horse-drawn carriage (yup horses... Ponssian-unique) drove in order for the diplomats to get in.

And I am not sure does anypony of us remember: How to work with unicorns... And what comes to our earth ponies: they are expert at farming. We have many farmers feeding our 5 cities and using greatly their resources. Even though farming is not our best skill, we are still good at it." Blue Crystal said to Silver Gleam.

Claria began laughing, "no no, you see, the air core live full time at the fortress with the rookies, so there's a good chance that we will run into some, and your uniform will remind them of the airship crews they cut through and the ship crews that killed their friends, heck I was up there fighting in the airships and when I first saw you it took a lot not to gut you right then and there" she pats him on the back "but don't worry you'll be fine" she then says under her breath "heh...trainees into battle..."

"But, isnt the difference obvious? Navy uniforms are dark navy blue while this one im wearing is obviously Prussian Blue, as most officers and land units are, the foreign legion currently stationed in that fort is wearing red, i mean every branch has a different uniform... Its not me im worried about, hell during the Saxnonian campaign i went through one of the worst cicumstances a regiment could ever be. Stuck in a jungle, isolated from the rest of the army, no supplies and surrounded by hostiles. I mean i worry about theor survival. Anyway, im up for it, anything to stay away from that desk."

"Its more of the style of your uniform, it gives them bad memories, while im still on the subject, the crew employed on the airship werent very experienced were they? It was strange fighting a frightened enemy, I remember the face of panic they had when their rifle missed and an enemy was speeding towards them, also they need to be trained in close quarter fighting, they rely too much on their rifle and their sword skills were just sad, all i had to do was fly erratically until they shot, then land on the ship and start cutting them up, I was able to clear the deck of one ship in 3 minutes" they entered the fortress, and were on their way to the traniee room, members of the air core glaring at the duke "Although from what i heard, they crew of the larger ships gave them a good fight, a prevailing rumor is they only lost because other ships dropped off more crew onto the deck of that ship"

"The airships are a pretty new thing for us. We literarly took old ships that we were plannimg to scupper and made them fly. We had no crew trained for them but there was a massive voluntary movement among the youth. Most of the lads on the airships were just teens. Just finishing high school, never yeilding a real weapon before. I think they had what... 1 week of training. And if u recall none of the ships fored first, they were never meant to battle. The ships we brought were supposed to simply be phsycological while the ground troops dis the work. If they would have been expecting an attack, the cannons would have been loaded when u attacked and most of you wouldve been mowed down before even coming close to the ship. I doubt it. They were all underdeck, you were attacking one of the best trained crews, they were all underdeck to hide their true numbers, that ship alone carried 600 ponies, 100 of which top notch marines. Ships arent made for close combat anyway, theu are meant for bombardment but the river gabe little choice, as you may recall as soon as they hit open water it became a massacre... For you."

Claria just chuckled "you dont give us enough credit" she pats his back with her wing and they enter the class room, inside were about 15 ponies, both mare and stallions, aged about 15-16 years old, upon seeing Claria they all stood up from the large table they were sitting "Alright, this is the Duke of Uxibridge, he has been put in command of this squad and will accompany you during your final test"

 

One of the trainees spoke up "isnt this a little short notice your honor?

 

"Yes, but dont worry, your in capable hooves, hes got plenty of experience and should be a help you" she turned to the duke "Do you have any opening remarks before they are sent out?"
