Malachi took another drink to calm himself a little. "Magnum's right. Enough about talks of war. How about we end our meeting here for now and go get dinner. I'm sure you're both could use something to eat.  Lucky enough my mother happens to be cooking tonight at her restaurant.  She makes the best creamy tomato Alfredo you'll ever eat." 

 

He stood up after finishing his glass.  He then head over to the coat rack. "And I won't take no for an answer, you're my quests. So everything is my treat. Though I get to eat for free." He laughed.

In essence, if your nation ever got attacked by outsiders, we would send our armies to help defend your territory and sovereignty, and we would expect you to do the same for us. Since we're in such close proximity to each other, it's likely that an attacking horde would target both of us anyway, so I think it wise for us to present a unified front to any invaders."

"Yes... i guess it is useful at cooling down drinks and such... but ther than that... its more of an obstacle... Slows down fishing... ruins land... and the central heating in that area has a lot of trouble keeping up."

@@Skullbuster, "Well that's the way to do it if you want it done quickly. Rather risky though, especially if you don't know your opponent very well. It's one thing to beat your opponent fairly at a designated location where afterwards the loser can accept defeat, and something completely different to basically grab them by the throat and say what they say goes. A society that does not feel defeated does not give in, and attempting to execute control over them can only lead to a chain reaction where the end result is something nopony wants their hooves in. I'm curious though. What reason would they have to invade? And why only one city? That seems rather pointless unless it's a key point that grants you access to something in particular." he said.

"Well it started when one of our scout ships was stolen by them and taken against their will to be given a tour of their nation, the ship was then taken, and my diplomats sent home on one of their ships, however the crew vanished in a storm, a week later, the ships arrive, we managed to destroy one of their airships before i was forced to stand down when they threatened the city, they said they wanted a foothold in the south as their nation is some where to the far north"

@@Skullbuster, The captain got a stricken look on his face. "Airships?" He said slowly and in a way that made it obvious that he was holding back a very strong reaction. "Pardon my abruptness your highness but there is something that demands my immediate attention. If you'll excuse me for a moment " He said with a nervous smile. He got up and went to his currently dancing first mate and tapped him on the shoulder, jerking his head to the exit. They went outside and after half a moment, "PREPARE THE SHIP FOR DEPARTURE! NOW!" could be heard shouted very loudly. The captain came back in, ruffling his wings as he did so before rejoining the Queen. "You shouldn't have to wait for the Kaiser nearly as long now that he is to be informed that there is a hole in our defenses. Now I sincerely beg of you, please tell me all you know about these Ponssians." Two different bat ponies came in each with note pads and stood either side of the captain. "Congratulations your majesty. You just became Abendstern's highest priority." He said in a grave tone.

"Well" the queen started "They are highly advanced and have problem with showing off" a nearby pony coughed "They are ruled by a king, who lives in a huge multiroom palace, they seem to be too big for their own good and have some sort of need to conquer to keep them selves stable, apparently any pony less advanced then them are seen as barbarians, and then act like that gives them the right to trample all over us" The queen started getting irritated at talking about them, now finally having a chance to speak her mind "I didnt work all these years running my country just for some bare backs and unis to come in like they own the place just because they have bigger weapons!" an assistant ran over and started rubbing her shoulders as she sat in her chair "My queen please calm your self in front of guests" Salazaria closed her eye and took some deep breaths "I apologize for my outburst..."

Now if you or somepony else here happened to get a good glimpse of both their regular seaworthy, and their airships, I'd like to see if we can sketch some example images for comparison purposes. The assistant responded "Uni is short for unicorn, and bare back is our term for ponies with no wings or horns" Salazaria took a deep sigh "I can draw it" a blank scroll was handed to her by her assistants and a writing utensil she drew what the airship looked like, a wooden ship with 2 large balloons holding it up, then drew the larger warship, a metal vessel with large cannons on it "There" she gave them the scroll and started to eat a piece of fruit

"That is what i said, the fact that we never lost a war made us getting used to getting what we want, when we want. Also, by the tone of your diplomats his manesty had the impression you wouldnt be willing to sell it. Howeve, i have heard news that a western conquest against primitives has been successful, opening a large area of new land. Maybe this will finally meet our expansion needs."

After getting his hat and coat back on, he picked up his steel bat and rest it on his shoulder.  He then opened the doors and took lead. Along the way he said good night to most of the workers in the building till they were out the door.  Outside it seemed to have gotten darker, which made the city really light up. 

 

Malachi led them to a restaurant not to far from the Dons building. Out side it was rather big and had a sigh lit up with magic. When they walked though the doors, they were greeted by a few of the staff. After saying hello to them all he led then to a small table with comfortable chairs. On the tables were menus and a basket of freshly made garlic bread.

 

 

Malachi took a seat after giving the coat check his coat hat and bat.

Are your racial demographics different from each other and is there a lot of tension in your nation over race? And you know of their king's palace. Does that mean you've been to their nation?" he asked.

 

@Gloomfury, @Lordav[/b], The Kaiser took a seat and inhaled deeply, his focus for a moment was devoted to the garlic bread. He shook his head and looked up to the Don. "So Malachi, with you being in charge and all, your mother's restaurant must get a lot of business I don't doubt." he said.

The king wasnt used to walking on the streets unguarded. Not that anyone back home would dare try anything... But these were foreigners. He polietly gave his feathered hat and sat down on the chair. After hearing the Kaisers remark, he stated,

"Well, normally they are farmers, and occupy the lowest class, they wanted to be better represented and be more respected so I gathered up the most attractive bare backs in the land and cleaned them  up and put them in the palace as living statues, to show off their beauty, but yes! I have been to their nation, more of I was basically kidnapped when I boarded their ship to negotiate peace, I was brought there, made to sign a document then the sent me back with one of their own to add among my advisers"

When they got to the palace, the duke went to see Claria. He entered her office (i guess) and stated,

"I dont wish to interupt but i was wondering if i could maybe aid i. Millitary matters, as i wish to take a brake from paperwork."

Claria looked at him "Well your just in luck, one of my captains has submitted a request to become a commander! Ive looked him over and he looks good, but we get to watch the final test" She was overlooking a balcony with a good view of the stadium "here" she gives him a telescope, in the ring was the captain in full armor, his cape flowing in the wind, then 3 manticores entered the stadium "To become a commander he has to kill all 3, and then we rate his performance"

"Might i ask, just for a understanding of your military system. How is ones physical capability related to his ability to lead troops successfully? I mean battles are won by well-led armies, not by musculous generals... What would this prove of his commanding ability, other than the fact that he is strong?"

"Well, thats why we rate his performance, the tactics and strategy things are tested when a lieutenant applies to become a captain, in that test, well its a 2 part test, in the first part the lieutenant is placed in a maze defenseless and must escape while being hunted by a hungry wild manticore, then in the second part they must play 3 different games of stratigey  at the same time, if he wins 2 of 3, he wins, so if hes a captain, its already assumed that hes smart" the manticores roared and one launched its tail, the captain drew his sword and cut off the stinger and flew up to avoid the spurting venom

"Again, it tests individual strength. Abd games will never simulate a real army. Also how is he not put to a tougher strategy test for a commander. The duties and responsibilities, lets not talk about how many troops he commands, for a lieutenant is totally different for a commander. A lietenant barely comands a squad and must follow orders while hogh ranking staff must control an entire army. Also, from captain to commander... thats quite a big jump.If i may ask, what kind of millitary education do they go through, or is it independent?"

"Well all soldiers go to an academy, to get trained on how to fight and basic tactics, then there final test is to drop them out in the middle of the desert and survive, if they survive a week, they are made into official soldiers, after that they can go to a leader school to become a lieutenant, then apply to become a captain, then after that commander, and then generals, but they cant even apply for that until theyve spent 10 years as a commander" the captain swooped down and stabbed the manticore in the head killing it

"Soldiers go to officer school? That makes no sense. Soldiers should train as soldiers from the beggining to the end, while officers should be taught strategy from the start. The is no point in an general knowing how to battle. Its is not a generals duty to fight each other, they have to lead their armies. And you tell me these are all your ranks? Lietenant, captain, commander and general? I mean no insult but your system of millitary education needs reworking to keep up to 'proper' armies."

@Skullbuster, "Interesting. I'm not sure how that would work, if they're confined to a palace. We have our "Mares of Abendstern" who are normally used for promoting things, and of course our "Lady of Abendstern" who is in charge of those things. Being the female representative of the nation, and image of perfection aparently requires a lot of skill and not just beauty. We don't have any earth ponies, but we have a pretty small number of Unicorns who all are a part of our upper class. Were there any clear signs of large scale production or defenses?"

"Our military system is put in place to get the strongest, fiercest, and smartest warriors in the land, our leaders are trained for on the go thinking, we do war games constantly in the academy, and during off duty" the captain the swooped under the second manticore sliting through its throat, making it collapse and bleed out

Meanwhile, the ship had gone back to the river and informed the submarine of the news. It then began making the journey back home, whereas the ship returned back to the treasure fleet.

"No,no... A soldiers duty is to obey. Personal thought might contradict orders leading to the questioning of orders. And time is essential, there is no time for that. And soldiers dot have to rely on strength, but coordination. I heard of your fighting style, would have no chance against a properly trained regiment. Here look, and these are poorly trained guards." He points to the window where his guards are waiting, standing in a 5x4 square.

"Form 2 rank, prepare for volley fire!"

They form 2 lines and the front line kneels.

"Present arm, aim."

The simultaneously rake aim.

"Stand down at ease!"

They stand up in their two lines.

"Form square, brace for charge!"

 

They form a square of 2 rows, the first kneeling and keeping their bayonets up like pikes while the second stood up, ready to fire.

"At ease! Back in formation!"

They went back to their original position. All this was done simultaneously and coordinately. They moved as a single unit, executing each order immediately, without question.

He turned to her,

"Thats how soldiers should behave, not run independently, swinging a sword. Thinking is for officers only, obedience and discipline is for soldiers."
