Is it possible for a pony to get a Cutie Mark that they want/choose?

Hey Forums!

The way the Cutie Mark system seems to work is you find something that you're really good at doing and that's your 'special talent' now that said you're kinda stuck with what you get so if you don't like there's not much you can do. But do you think it's possible for a filly to get the Cutie Mark they want through sheer willpower and dedication? Because if you practice  the correct way of something over and over you'll improve so could that become your 'special talent'?

I think by the nature of cutie marks they can't give a pony a cutie mark that they don't want. A pony's got to be able to display their talent like Twilight or Rainbow Dash, but they also have to realize their own fondness for what their cutie mark would become about too. Applejack got hers after she realized how much she misses Sweet Apple Acres, she didn't get a cutie mark that symbolizes she has a talent for working at the farm during her phase where she wanted to be a city pony in Manehatten.

It seems unlikely that a pony would dislike their cutie mark as it represents something about themselves that they've come to realize and like about themselves. Cheerilee for example said she got hers the day she realized she wanted to become a teacher. Since that's what she loved, it seems unlikely she wouldn't like her cutie mark.

At the very least, I think it unlikely for a pony to find they have a special talent for something they despise doing and go out of their way to avoid doing.

So this last bit of your post raises a different question: How early are cutie marks predetermined by the magical forces that give ponies cutie marks. Is the cutie mark decided the moment a pony is born and given later on in life when the pony realizes there special talent? That would mean that every single ponies life is predetermined. Or is a rough guess made and then refined as ponies life goes on until they find what they're good at/they're special talent is.

You can be extremely good at something but still hate doing it though.

But in that case, if the filly really wants to get a specific cutie mark, I think she would already have got it before even starting to practice.

The cutie mark represents the special talent of the ponies (what they prefer), but that doesn't mean they're already good at it.

I think you must like the special talent enough to get competent at it. Though i do think with DT and SS they may regret their marks when they age. Like a mid life crisis tattoo.

This is a grey area.  I think you get your cutie mark when you realize that this is what you love.  If you wanted one bad enough to practice that hard, I think you'd get one.  I don't think it matters how good you are or are not.  Fluttershy got hers almost the instant she saw animals up close & realized she wanted to be w them.

On the other hand, if your parents are making you do something & you don't really want to, I don't think it matters how much you practice or how good you get. IMO, it doesn't matter how much you want to want it or think you should want it (if you see what I mean).  If you don't truly love doing it, you don't get a cutie mark.

But a cutie mark is representative of your "Special Talent" not "Favorite Activity" which means that it's given to you when you find something that makes you special, typically something you're very good at.

Maybe you are right.  Look at Rarity, for instance. Her special talent is gem hunting.  Her cutie mark seems to indicate she should be a prospector or a jeweler.  She does use gems in her gowns, but it is very marginal to her desire to be The Best Fashionista EVER!

The show doesn't really get into this.  I've seen some fan fics with the Head Canon that pony parents have a mystic sense about what to name their kids.  IMO, it does seem that way & remember in EQ magic works.

IRL, the writers do it (knowing how the character's life works out probably helps them)

My Cutie Mark theory is that is a 3 step process, 1. Finding what you're good at 2. Learning to like what you're good at, and 3. Making a connection between your personality and talent.  Cutie Marks are not predetermined at birth and a foal can bounce back between 1 and 2 for quite some time. Also the third step makes it possible to decide when to get a cutie mark because only that one pony can make that connection, even if his/her friends keep saying (make sure to turn face palm and corniness meter off before reading) "Your cutie mark should totally be taffy, because you are really good at making it and you are flexible!" The pony themselves has to make the connection.

Reading this topic, I'm leaning towards the idea that a cutie mark represents something that a pony really enjoys doing and it is because they enjoy it that they become talented a it. When you really love doing something, practicing is easy so how could you not get better at it? It becomes a passion.

So now I'm wondering: what happens if a pony discovers that they love something, gets a cutie mark for it, gets good at it, and then gets bored of it? Losing a passion happens to some people and it's not necessarily a bad thing. What if for example, Scootaloo got a cutie mark for doing scooter tricks, but later on she learned to fly and the sensation of soaring through the air was so intoxicating that scooter tricks became tame and boring to her? I know the writers would never do something like that for the sake of keeping their metaphor pure, but it could make an interesting fanfic.

But she has been riding her scooter for a while now, and she still hasn't got her cutie mark.

I guess that's because she'll get tired of it after learning to fly (basically, the reason you gave).

Hence she'll never have a scooter as her cutie mark.

(In my opinion, ponies can't get tired of the special talent their cutie mark represents.)
