New(er) Brony - Father of two little ponies. Reading suggestions?

Hello Poniverse.

I'm a 33 year old father of two, who has (because of his daughters) become quite interested in the show.

We've watched all of the episodes, have seen both EG movies, have a boatload of toys, junior books, coloring books, etc...

However, for Christmas, I purchased The Journal of the Two Sisters for my 6 year old. We've really enjoyed reading it together and it has me wondering if there is more official literature out there that we can read.

Do you have any suggestions? I appreciate any help that can offered.

Thanks!

When it comes to literature, there are also many other books, most notably The Elements of Harmony: The Official Guidebook, as well as Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell. With the latter, the writer (G.M. Berrow) herself has also written many other MLP:FiM stories, such as Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Ponypalooza Party.

There are also the IDW comics, but just to start off, I would recommend a MLP:FiM comic series known as My Little Pony: Friends Forever. It's a simple yet colourful series.

I hope you have a fun time reading these books along with your daughters. ;)

I believe I saw some real world copies of the Daring Do books on amazon as well.

Haha - it just occurred to me how much my post makes it seem like I'm ashamed of my status as an MLP fan.

Trust me, I'm not. I really enjoy the show and it's related content. Heck, I can probably recite the dialogue from most episodes and the EG movies! :)

I really appreciate the quick response and the great suggestions! I will certainly be following this lead.

Thank you!

Heh, you're not alone. I never realised MLP:FiM sold books for a while.

You're welcome. I'm all for helping people in general. :3

Whoa! Another '30 something' dad of two daughters. /)

Anything by GM Barrow is worth reading with your kids. I'll post some links on Amazon shortly, but the tens to capture the feel of the show well.

Welcome to the forum :D

Fimfiction has the most pony fan fiction (WARNING There is a lot of porn on that site!)  I saw a story Pirates For a Day that has Dinky & Pipsqueak being pirates.  Sorry, ICR the author, but it looked like something kids might like.  Also, I think Amazon has all the official pony books.

Well I don't really read that much out of show material, but even though this sounds crazy, you should try some of the fanfics. You would need to explain to your kids that this is separate from post season 2, but you could read Past Sins. It's an absolutely charming tale that emulates all the best aspects of MLP, and really does feel like an official work.

Just type it into the search bar and it should come up.

If your looking for just official work though. I guess Return of Queen Chrysalis could be a good option, but that's one of the few I've read, and it's a graphic novel.

Past Sins is the 1st in the Nyx's Family series.  Basic plot is that some cultists gather the pieces of Nightmare Moon in an attempt to rebuild Nightmare Moon.  The spell is interrupted & it only brings her back as a part grown filly.  Twilight goes out the next day to investigate, finds her & takes her home.

For kids the best in the series are probably Nyx's Family & Winter Bells (a Hearth's Warm Eve story).  They are both about Twilight's family meeting Nyx.  However, they are by different authors & contradict each other on key plot points.

Cheerilee's Class would also be excellent for kids, but AFAIK it isn't finished yet.

Past Sin's is an excellent choice, it's a fanfiction so you'll have to read it online, but it's well worth it. It is only relevant to pre Magical Mystery Cure, but I'd say read it anyway. It is very sad and quite dark, but it's overall a complete masterpiece and a fantastic read for your 2 daughters. I give as much respect to as I give the comics and the novels, maybe even more.
