Pinkie Pie may be a genius.

Pinkie Pie is the kind of pony some people seem to write off as a gag character (including some writers but I digress), however I have a feeling there is far more to her than meets the eye. There are instances throughout the four seasons of the show where she not only displays some unusual abilities but has knowledge of things even Twilight never read about. 

 

Take her knowledge of magic and science for example. Most recently in the Rainbow Rocks movie Pinkie was the only one who actually understood how Twilight's interdemensional portal worked out of the mane six. Not only that she was the one that pointed out that such a thing could be made in the first place. This is just one piece of evidence though, I mean she's been distracted by a simple balloon before how could she be a genius?

 

Well as I mentioned her knowledge doesn't seem to just extend to science but magic as well. Pinkie has performed feats that baffle even other magical ponies and has displayed knowledge on par with Zecora on occasion. One thing to take note of is her peculiar knowledge in the realm of magic involving reflective surfaces. Not only did Twi's portal use a mirror, Pinkie has been shown to know how to travel/Communicate through mirrors , knows a spell involving making clones of herself with a specific place called "The mirror pool" , and a probably others that are slipping my mind. Then there is her ability to slow her decent in mid air , which may I add she avoided answering as to HOW she performed it when Dash had asked her. 

 

Its harder to spot the fact that she knows so much because she is the kind of pony who only shares info when the situation demands it, sometimes not even that. Examples include like how she knew about the Parasprites or when she just so happened to know what page a flight spell was in for Twilight to use. Her great memorizing skills and abilities may indicate that she is actually a genius

I don't know, unless they make an episode that proves she's indeed a genius (which would certainly be a Twilight/Pinkie Pie episode), I still consider her a gag character.

 

But there are more and more scenes that hint she's a genius, like in Rainbow Rocks (as you said), so this isn't completely impossible.

Another thing to point out is her knowing how to play an organ, something that she apparently had no idea she could do.

Yes, I think Pinkie is a genius. And has magical abilities beyond most unicorns. (Though not on par with the higher level unicorns like Sunset Shimmer, Trixie, and the princesses.)

Indeed. Let's not forget that she appears to know the names and dates of birth of every pony in Ponyville, and not only that but can mentally calculate exactly how many days it is until someone's birthday, even if it's months away.

 

Pinkie was my original "best pony". Although Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer have eclipsed her for me, my appreciation of Pinkie has not diminished.

 

Pinkie is still pretty awesome pony.

While Pinkie is no doubt very intellegent, she has trouble applying it to her social skills. Pinkie is also incredibly perceptive, though her focus in perception is rather lacking. In Equestria Girls, Both Pinkies knew what Twilight was doing on either side of the portal without any physical way of knowing such a thing, but in Party of One, she wasn't able to pick up the quite obvious signs that her friends were throwing her a surprise party. In Rainbow Rocks, she understood and translated multidimensional theoretical quantum physics, but in Luna Eclipsed, she couldn't tell when one of her jokes is hurting somepony's feelings.

Heh, this is true. At the end of the day, we're all playing Twilight Sparkle in Feeling Pinkie Keen and my just have to come to the same conclusion: don't try to explain it, it's just Pinkie being Pinkie.

Pinkie Pie is an Idiot Savant.  Most times the accent is on the idiot, but in Luna Eclipsed she figured out the whole 'It's Fun To Be Scared By Nightmare Moon' thing hours before Twilight did (for example) or her existential crisis in Too Many Pinkie Pies

 

Her problem is that she is considered a clown & people do not respect a clown.  It's like in the old song "Everybody Loves a Clown" by Gary Lewis.  You can't turn it off when you want to be taken seriously

This is very true, although she doesn't prioritize when she's doing something strange that's rather important. During Swarm of the Century, she knew how to drive away the parasprites, but didn't tell anypony that the instruments that she was gathering served that purpose, thus everypony thought she was just being weird. If she had just taken a few minutes to explain herself, the problem could've been easily resolved before Twilight had the chance to make everything substantially worse.
