Fanfic or Canon?

I'd personally prefer to be transformed before attempting that, if it was me.

Are those the ones you prefer? Humans being turned into a pony or something? This should be interesting to hear.

I wouldn't go calling people idiots, just because of a story. But yes, while i do see your point; there are some that i can enjoy.

I never called anyone an idiot.

I can't stand when one story comes out, gets popular, and then twenty other stories just like it are published. It's like a sheep herd over there. Everyone will just go with what everyone else is doing.

I prefer anything non-clop.

So do i, i hate seeing clopfics in general. Why would they do that? I only like romances that involve two opposites(light romance), not the same gender together. ok, i can't find the right words to put it exactly, but just say a love story at best; nothing like those.

I'm a fan of the canon, first and foremost, so I would definitely choose that over fanfic. I think it depends a lot on what fics you read and what you're looking for (from either fanfic or the show), but generally speaking, I love the canon characters (don't read OC fic) as FiM portrays them, so I like fanfic that feels true to their canon characterization. I'm also pretty satisfied with what the show gives us in general - there are one or two moments I didn't like or thought felt OOC, so reading a different take on those can be nice, but nothing really major - so I don't look to fanfic to "fix" the show's mistakes, I guess? And fanfic can also be good for expanding on characters that only had small roles in fanon, but a lot of the reason I read (and write) fanfic is to see the characters in situations canon won't give me (same-sex shipping, fic about minor characters, etc), but it's important that they feel IC and recognizable as the same characters from the show - my favourite fics are the ones I can imagine happening in the show, if MLP took a different direction. I'm not interested in reading about characters who barely resemble their canon selves, or "realistic" violent grimdark Equestria because the fanfic author thinks it's "better" (although there's nothing wrong with people who do like those things, different strokes etc~ :please: ).

As for fanfics being better than canon... well I think "better" is very subjective to start with (and just means "what I like more" - if you want dark and edgy action, for example, of course fanfic is going to appeal more because that isn't what FiM is actually about) but all I can say is you must have been reading different fics from me, because I've seen a lot of awful fanfiction (not limited to MLP) - of course, there are very talented authors out there, but there's also a ton of stories which are barely legible, terrible spelling/grammar, wildly OOC characters, etc etc, so it's pretty funny to me the idea that *most* fanfic is better than canon. But like I said, I guess that just depends on personal tastes :)

I sometimes screw up what i mean to say and mess it up completely. I didn't mean to say one was better than the other, so yes, you're right. If you can actually nail a character like twilight to the letter, then yes, i'll like it; but turn away from that and i just give up on that fic.

I don't like the ones if they put themselves into it, really kills it. But doing the romance thing between a human and pony is just...Bleh.

That's mostly falls on personal fantasies, and while I admit I've come across several I've enjoyed. No way in heck do I wish to see any of that close to the show. So I rarely find myself comparing those to the show.

Oddly enough, I read fan fiction for an expansion of the world, rather than an expansion of the characters. I think fan fiction works better for someone like me, who likes to see a darker spin put on things.

I may not know much about their world, but i've seen enough that i can imagine it; sort of like... um... how should i put this? Hollow Shades was amazing by the people who described it in fics, even the bat ponies are good. Some may argue that they're not exactly canon; which they are not. But i love them all the same; makes them unique in a way. It just seems more suited for them, but i'm not sure if that was even in the canon or not.

It delends.

Some fanfictions are very poorly written with things that I wouldn't want to see made canon.

I agree. It all depends on whether it's well-written, sticks to canon, or badly-written and having "Prince Bloodwingsparklejack t3h Allicron Printz!lololololololol1!"

I prefer the characterization that the canon works give the characters over the ones used in fanfics. That is to say, I disregard any non-canon sources when trying to write a particular character for a fanfic. I'll read fics and enjoy them if the Mane 6 are portrayed well, but I don't read stories centered on OCs. Not because those aren't as good, merely because I personally have no interest in them.

I'm not someone who goes around flaming fics because 'they're not canon', because that would be utterly stupid, but if canon characters are acting wildly OOC I don't want to read a story anymore because I can't relate to it anymore.

Still, if the writers of the show were to use some elements from fics in canon, I'd be okay with that.
