Your thoughts on HYPE?

What is hype?

Hype is basically the amount praise and attention a certain "thing" or "person" gets.

For example, people make allot of hype over the YouTuber, Markiplier.

Now is that a bad thing?

Well, hype can be a good thing because it can give Mark more and more attention, BUT it also can and WILL be a bad thing.

How?

People eventually will find Mark's attention and praise to be a bit annoying.

And sadly in the end people are going to hate him because of all his hype.

Don't believe me?

Look at another YouTuber.

Pewdiepie for example.

I subscribed to him a while back when he had just 8 million followers.

And back in that time, he didn't have such a large ammount of hate built up against him.

Now, even if I just mention Pewdiepie, someone is going to give me a weird look or say that he's overrated.

Is he overrated?

Well, what does overrated necessarily mean?

Overrated is a term used to describe when something or someone has received too much love and attention.

But my question is, who are you to regulate how much love or attention someone or something gets?

Personally, I think if you're just spewing hate at someone or on something just because that particular thing or person gets allot of love, then you're acting like a straight up asshole.

By calling something "overrated" you're making it sound as if people shouldn't like that thing or person, and that it's "uncool" to mention that they even like it.

Why not just say "Personally, I'm not really into that."

For example, I'm not into League of Legends.

But allot of friends are.

Now am I going to say to my friend "LoL is overrated"?

Over course not.

It sounds like an insult.

I would just say "I'm more of an FPS guy, so I'm not really into that game".

It's much more kinder than, "That game is fucking overrated."

So in the end, what can we say about hype?

Hype doesn't kill something or someone.

It's to the fault of the people themselves whom have been *ahem* "disturbed" by the amount of hype that person or thing gets, and as a result they feel as if they are obligated to tell people what they can and can't love.

imo, it's always, always better to be cautiously optimistic about a thing rather than buy into the hype. Hype can create unrealistically high expectations and put a wicked lotta pressure on the creators. Just look what happened with Watch Dogs, Destiny, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Duke Nukem Forever and Titanfall. All were hyped to astronomical levels (how funny, because three of those games involve space) and fell way short of expectations, leaving millions of people massively disappointed.

Nothing wrong about getting excited, but lots of hype can backfire horrifically if something doesn't live up to the hype. Daring's examples with Watch Dogs, Titanfall, and Destiny are perfect examples

Hype can hurt things, especially when fans keep pestering those not interested about how wonderful and great it is and how you must watch it. It can really put one off, especially when you expect it to be so wonderful, yet the flaws simply jump at you.

Just say something is good, not the best thing ever.

Hype can be fun but it also carries an extra risk of disappointment. The higher your expectations are for something, the more disappointment you can feel if it doesn't turn out the way you hoped it would.

That being said, I still think it's worth it to be optimistic, albeit while exercising some caution.

I have a tendency to judge people by their taste in entertainment. And that doesn't boil down to if someone likes something I don't we're done. If you can't adequately explain why you like a thing, I start to suspect you're just doing that thing out of habit. If there is no personal drive in your entertainment decisions, if you are just killing time for the sake of killing time. If you are listless about it, I lose respect for you. So if someone is watching something just due to its popularity, and has no self-awareness about how much time they are spending on it or can't articulate what it is that keeps drawing them back, they are akin to junkies in my mind. Entertainment addicts. The habit got the best of them and they are no longer using their higher faculties effectively.

YouTube has a lot of that. It feeds you short-attention-span requiring tripe and asks for nothing but your time, and maybe some willingness to watch some ads. I've grown very self-conscious about my net habits recently because it preys on this compulsion for being entertained at all times very insidiously.

I was hyped for Halo Reach. Hype was followed up by a fantastic game.

I was hyped for Titanfall. Hype was followed up by a fantastic game.

I was hyped for Advanced Warfare. Hype was followed up by a fantastic game.

I was also hyped for Destiny...that didnt turn out so great  :( Me and my friends were so, SO excited for it that when the game turned out to be the opposite of what we thought and were promised it would be, I now don't get excited over anything. It was such a flop (in my opinion. of course. I know others enjoy it  :) ) I am always so cautious about liking anything new now  :( I just pray that Rise Of The Tomb Raider is everything I hope it will be

I really dislike Pewdiepie  :P  purely because I don't find him entertaining and don't understand his popularity at all. It then depresses me to find channels much smaller than his that are of much better quality.

Hype kills the enjoyment of a game, show, or film for me. When you get hyped you are overexpecting which can hurt the enjoyment. I'm not actually hyping myself up on MLP Season 5 that much mainly because I found some other shows to watch during the hiatus to. So instead of watching Season 5 trailers online all the time, I spend more time watching shows like Gravity Falls, Wander over Yonder, and Doraemon. And I play games on my 3DS as well.
