request Help with my OC development?

So, it seems that I am planning on a special somepony for Double Espresso. His name is Lava Lamp, he is a unicorn Crystal Pony, and his talent is lighting spells. That's all I got.

So.. any help here, with either design or backstory? 

PS. I plan on making him an EE pony first, than transitioning him to EqE.

What instantly comes to my mind...

 

Burnt Umber as Coat Color (should come good on a Crystal Pony) with a mainly dark brown, but also some thin dark yellow to dark gold strands, mane and tail. Design of the mane like Comet Tail, for the tail I would think of something longer, perhaps like Soarin - both with the mentionned dark yellow stripes. Eyes perhaps dark turqouise. Magic aura dark red; fluctuating with small brighter red bubbles, like you imagine a lava lamp.
