I know I can do the URL, but I'd prefer to have the GIF itself in my post, no link-clicking required. Is that possible? If so, what do I need to do?

On your right next to the URL button/chain button is an icon of a little photo. Click that, and paste your image link. This'll work for GIFs, PNGs and the other well-known image formats.

The same method used to link images is applied when linking GIFs.

Also,you can also use the BBCode,in case of you using a mobile phone,for example:
