When I really thought about it, the two episodes reminded me of the fan-game 'Story of the Blanks' (you know, about Cutie Marks being 'bad' and all). 

 

Then that got me thinking.......

 

Here's my theory:

 

Starlight comes from a small village that isn't on Equestria's map, where a Unicorn rules over them similar to how the village is run in 'The Cutie Map'. Anyone who had a Mark was turned into a Blank Flank, and anyone who came into the town met the same fate. 

However, the Unicorn soon was getting very old and he couldn't do the spell anymore. So, Starlight was taken under his guidance and he taught her about the spell....But the training was never complete as the Royal Sisters stopped his reign and the village became nonexistent with the residents spreading across Equestria. Starlight ran away, hiding in the old unicorn's house trying to finish her training.

 

Unfortunately, she couldn't completely remove the Cutie Mark and instead it was replaced with the '=' sign. She of course was sad over this, but then she decided to follow the old man's steps and start her own community.

 

So, anyone agree or have something different?

I'm still struggling on whether or not Starlight Glimmer was sincere or has some ulterior motive. Just what was her "cause"?

 

Assuming that she really does want nopony to be better than anypony else and considering that her special talent is also magic with a cutie mark similar to Twilight's...

 

It makes me wonder if she herself applied for apprenticeship under princess Celestia the same way Twilight did but just fell short because "some other pony" did better than she did. She never lived the resentment down of being denied her perceived destiny and has been chronically jealous of other ponies since.

 

Did anyone else notice how upset she got when Twilight blocked her magical attack and then whining about how much she studied? She really seems to hate it when another pony outperforms her, especially in the field she specializes in.

 

Jealousy coupled with ambition is just a recipe for disaster when somehow she found out that cutie marks could be removed and all special talents along with them. If all ponies in Equestria can be "equalized" then nopony would be better than anybody else and her jealousy issues would no longer be a concern to her; she could finally become happy and by extension, everypony else will. This is how she will bring harmony to Equestria.

 

Well, that's my theory anyway. Mostly speculative, but hey.

I always thought that she was never satisfied with her cutie mark and it would always bother her. Eventually, it got to her and she starts to hate cutie-marks and that is when she learns how to remove cutie marks by using dark ancient magic and uses it on a village to make them see things from her view.

I'll admit I'm eager to find out if she was just power-hungry or genuinely thought she was in the right. I'm hoping for the latter but we'll have to wait and see.

She has so much potential as character to fill in a very intriguing back story to help explain her motivations and intentions and lead her to commit to her actions. 

 

I just really hope they don't screw it up when she re-appears to explain it.

 

Anyways, I was thinking if she had a falling out with possibly Celestia's school for gifted unicorns or some other unicorn schooling institution.  Starlight Glimmer's magic is most likely not of the ordinary and is very powerful, on the level of an advanced unicorn with some fair amount magical knowledge. 

The question arises, where did she learn it?  Her magic seems to powerful dark magic, it if it has the capacity to rip off one's cutiemark - I doubt those spells were created with the intent of bringing peace to Equestria.  Who could have developed such dark arts and for what exact purpose, one wonders?

Maybe she did learn about it from a highly advanced unicorn, that was very knowledgeable but was rejected out of typical unicorn schooling institutions because he didn't agree with their other views (again, why would a unicorn try to create such powerful magic that would remove a pony's cutie mark, and apparently, some inherit individuality of that character).  

 

Or maybe Starlight is self-taught.  What exactly does she want to do? lead a drastic revolution against Celestia's ruling power?  She seemed to display a bit of a messiah complex when trying to conduct her social experiment.  The type where she believes she has to the standout who leads the revolution in order for it to succeed (whether she ends up joining her ponies if she succeeded is also another story).  

 

There's so many things I'd like to know about her motivations and intentions.  I can't wait to see her come back later (please let her be written well).

I like the remarks The Pony One and pony.colin have stated, I wonder if that's the case with her character on the show. Hopefully they'll address more into her if she appears again which I hope she does, I like her as a villain and a character.

I'd guess that there's some bigger thing going on and Starlight was/is just one part of it. And all those pancakes MUST have something to do with it....some kind of pancake conspiracy maybe

I have to believe that Starlight is under the authority of someone else, and is spreaking a philosphy that she has bought into. For all we know this could be a grand scheme by Grogar, Sombra, or whoever as a subtle way of gaining influence.

 

Oh, I can't wait to see more of this.
