You cant have frigates, brigs and man o wars... for two reasons

1. Did the GM approve you this... yes you are supposed to ask the GM first

2. Cannons dont exists... so they dont exist..... what you CAN have are Cogs, galleys.... and maybe longships =p

Apologies to all. For whatever reason my pc suddenly decided to hate my internet browser of choice, and since I didn't have any others downloaded I've had to spend the day fixing it, aside from my regular life obligations.

Cannons... I'm gonna say that they're incredibly crude at this point. Pinkie's example is more like a confetti popper, lower tech than fireworks. There's a big difference between making a bang and trying to shoot a couple pounds of lead/bronze on a predictable line for a great distance. Likewise, firearms are not in play currently.

I suspect that ponies wouldn't have many large siege engines, especially in Equestria where there hasn't been a major war for an extended period. If anything, I suspect it would be similar to bastillas.

Of course, another major obstacle in the way of weapon development is magic. Why research ballistics when you can already produced the same effect with magic? (Dragon Age Inquisition cites this dilemma actually.)

Additionally, I'm going to say that if Gloomfury had started taking down big navy targets, the literal wrath of the Gods would have smashed him to smithereens by now.

So. What? Gloom gets made out to be a lair? Oh, there's no way he could ever take a navy ship. And because it's so damn impossible we shouldn't give him the light of day. That's basically what I'm sure gonna happen. So what's the point then. My idea of a pirate strong enough to fight the navy starting his own colony is now so far fetched that it can't even happen.

So again, what's the point then?

Are my ideas bunck, am I going to have you or someone else tell me what I can do?

Well. I'm the Gm. My entire purpose is to set up the story, define its boundaries, and mediate disputes.

Not all ideas work with certain rule-sets. Most rp's dont allow for OC alicorns because of their OP'ness. Others don't want a dark and gritty character in a light and fun roleplay. Getting angry is just as fruitless and trying to drown the ocean.

Yeah. You can be a pirate. You can be a powerful pirates. I'm just saying the current means by which you're proposing to do so don't make sense in the context of the roleplay. I'm more than willing to work with you to try and get the effect you desire. But you can't fit a square peg in a round hole.

@@HigurSan

So basically we are classical/medieval times.

@@Gloomfury

Actually you dont need to have an almighty fleet to do that. Colonies could be started with as much as 100 people, what matters is how you make it grow. If you are raiding trade ships, you can easily make money. Then you can ise that money to "bribe" pepple in joining you. Though you would have to have small groups of ships scattered around, in order to catch as many ships as possible... And to be hard to catach, as a large fleet is slow... Making an easy target for a navy.

But i ask u... Why would somebody leave his/her home to join a pirate colony... It sounds a lot less secure

Also... Colonies ar very rare to survive... Look at the colonisation of america... Many of the immidiate settlements disnt survive. Sither due to weather, natives. Diesease, lack of law or starvation

And the sailors of the company ships are still civilians... Mostly traders trying to make a bit. There is no way to be a porate without hurting innocents

@@HigurSan,

If I'm gonna keep going with this RP Higuersan, you're gonna have to be 100% fuckin'  specific. What's the time base this is set in, how far technology has come. The state of witch the land is in. Is it like Victorian England or is it like before the French revaluation. Or is it medieval.

Cause you didn't mention jack shit on the first page. Which I will point out is your fault. You need to be thorough. Because if you're not it give everyone else freedom of some things. Kinda like saying it's in the modern age. It's rather vague ain't it?  So that geved others the freedoms to say like oh, my OC is a sniper pony and he carries a gun. But then you say, Oh, there are no guns.

You get what I'm saying?

I like to to think outside the box and use loopholes. But you 're saying that there were things that were in the contract that you didn't write. So to speak.

And that's what pissed me off.

@@Lordav

And I'm very sad to say that in my schools they didn't really teach history very good. Because our education system suck ten pound balls. Anyway from what I do know is that some of the colonies were still able to thrive. It just takes time witch I made clear that this ain't gonna happen in a day. And I also said that they're navigating away from piracy.

They're trying out being escorts, if that goes well then they'll maybe try being something else that'll help them more.

And the fleet is for protection of the colony. And mostly for that. Not to wage war. If a colony cant protect itself then what?

I am reasonable, I just get irritated sometimes.  Which is why I took a bit to cool down and think.

I am also not afraid or too proud to say I don't know about a lot of things. Since you two seem to know more about this sort of thing then I do. At least a little more then me. I'd hope you to can help me to at least get to a point that I'll be a little satisfied.

@@Gloomfury,

I'm going to be really clear about this.

I didn't expect this to be a problem. I thought "The rp community here is pretty solid, they'll be able to handle a little ambiguity instead of being fed everything with a silver spoon. Cause with a few rules but not a ton, some great stuff can come out!' This is steadily making me regret that faith.

The technology level present in this RP is the -exact- same as the show. In large part, the background and history are the exact same, divering a little bit because I've not kept up the the recent episodes. I largely ignored the Power Ranger's-esque table that constantly hauls around Twilight and Company, other than to have it be the reason why they're not immediately present in the RP.

I don't claim to have a perfect knowledge of the show, nor its associated technologies, what's possible and impossible with magic. I'm trying to extrapolate what I know of the show into new situations as they come up. This is largely due to the fact that, while there is a plot to this rp, we've not reached even the first chapter. This whole segment has been, and still is set up for the RP's main plot, establishing character relationships, influence levels, and so on.

So if a question arises regarding what can and cannot be done in the RP, refer to this one statement: This RP is based directly off of the show, but adds Mature/Adult rated topics.

Frankly, if you can convince me that (whatever your idea is) fits within the context of the rp, fits the added Mature themes, and has a detailed explanation as to why I should let you have it, You can quite literally have anything you want. It's not all that hard either.

Example:

1. You want cannons.

2. I put forth the problem that we've never seen gunpowder in the show, nor guns, nor cannons. Plus, why would ponies need cannons?

3. There's a simple answer: Cannons are powered by magic instead of gunpowder. They're there because of natural progression.

4. There are pirates. Pirates want to raid ships. Merchant ships develop a weapon to deter pirates. Pirates make a bigger/better weapon to counter that. Typical warfare scenario, totally plausible.

I swear to you, I am -not- doing this to try and cram and break your ideas so they'll fit in some tiny little rp box I want to go exactly as planned. I'd have just written a short story if I did. This whole process is just a protective buffer against that which might be game changing being added on a whim.

(Whether it'd make you happy or not, I've been thinking about the pirate scenario as a whole. I've said several times it wasn't plausible because there'd be holy wrath or whatnot. Now I have to admit that I was probably wrong about that. For one, while the Princesses I'll maintain are still active rulers, they can't be everywhere. They've the demands of a whole nation/continent on their minds. Unless it got to the city-sacking level, they'd likely leave it to advisors or military generals, who may or may not be competent. I apologize for this error and beg your forgiveness.)

@@HigurSan,

It's alright.

But now you see what I mean. Cover your bases, then make sure there's some things you missed. No one thinks to look around a corner or two. Years of watching TV, movies and reading books made me drive to think in ways that are kinda different. I look up and down while everyone keeps their head straight.

anyway when you said the princesses were active in things you didn't really take in account that they're just two mares. They can't bee everywhere at once. So of course there's gonna be some ponies that were placed in charge who don't really bother to fill them in and just handle things on their own. And they keep doing it and doing it.

Which could lead to corruption.

As for the weapons, I hope you will allow the normal stuff. Swards, knives, spears, daggers anything with a bade. And sure, ponies wouldn't really have much of a nead for them. But other races might. The griffons, the Minotaurs, the zebras. the Saddle Arabians.

Bust mostly the first to cause they actually have fingers/ talons. You might thinks cause griffons have talons they don't need anything else. But, if they kept using their talons they might hurt or loose one. Or they might get very dull. Which is why they use blades, or talon gauntlet blades.

Because it's much easier to get a new blade then to have dull or broken talons. Am I right?

As for the others. Since mlp sets around the Greek myths, like Minotaurs, hydras, chimeras. Even using tartarus, the Greek word for hell.

So they might have other beings out there. In some stories I'm sure some of the Minotaurs used weapons. Like an ax, a club or hammer. Maybe some started using swards.

We don't know.

But maybe we could use that. We mostly know about the ponies and not much about the other races. So who says we can't make our own things up about them.

Maybe some of them came up with an idea that can launch a projectile.

As for the Zebras, like Zecora. She was seen making potions and such, some accidentally blowing up. Maybe some beings got together and came up with something that can do such a thing. Without the need for gunpowder.

There are lots of things that cane be used for combustion or to launch something. Like a potato gun.

Like I said, loopholes.

How about apple-pie catapults?

To be honest... Using something else other than gunpowder wont really work. As gunpowder could give out controed and predicae explosions.

Why cant we just stick to the medieval/ mythical setting of tue series and stick to that. Captapts, rams, balistas, trebuchets and arrows. I mean... Lets not go on with inventioons and stick to what we know, and have in the show.

I don't mean to pour gasoline on the fire, but does it really matter at this point?  Just let him have a Caribbean-style pirate ship (or a few) and leave it at that.  Sounds like something they would use in the show, anyway.  we don't need to waste time arguing about specifics, just keep the over-all story moving....

An Alert to All Players:

Considering the current state of the story, with many of the characters being stuck in a kind of limbo until its conclusion, if y'all are wanting to pursue other options, that is entirely understandable. If you want, you are totally free to make another character with which to post with and look into alternate plotlines. Second characters still ought to be of good quality and fit in with the roleplay's theme, but I'll have lower standards for them, seeing as you will have already proven your ability to me with the first.

Character Sheet:

Name: Professor Annabella of House Belle

Age: 25

Pony Race: Pegasus

Role/Job: Current Head of House Belle. Once a professor in Canterlot, but hasn't been since she took on her new position.

Apperance:

sig-3839773.Nmfo2B2.png

Personality: A once loving, kind pony, now turned into a bitter competitor hardened by the reality of the business world and game of houses. She's very smart and tactical, acting without much politics or speaking. Once a professor, Anna has a knowledge that's nearly unmatched. She has a soft side to her that's hard to come by, but for the most part Anna is pretty bitter, angry, and depressed due many events that have happened to her over the past few years. There isn't much to write about her personality because she doesn't show it.

Bio:

House Belle is one of the largest, most notorious houses of Equestria, settled in the capitol of the country, Canterlot. Solid followers of Celestia and her will, they make most of their profit off mines located around the country. They are unicorns blessed with the ability to seek out gems and minerals with their magic, and have been using such magic since their days before Equestria was even formed. They had been the first to Canterlot Mountains where the capitol was located, and when Celestia came and conquered it, she graciously allowed the house to continue their trade in the city, and one day, in all of Equestria. Thousands of years and generations later, Belle is a massive icon. They own Belle Mining Co, a multi-million dollar company that's very well known for it's jewelry and selling of gems. With the sigel of a long horned goat, The Belle's words are "To The Highest Peak and Lowest Valley". In recent years they have reached their highest peak, and fell to their deepest, lowest valley, known in the family history.

Back in the days when the New World was first formed, under the unity of the 3 races, the unicorn colony of the Belle's founded Canterlot Mountains and set up a village there. It wasn't until House Benmark came and fought the Belle's that they showed their colors in battle. A long was started, until Celestia came, and it ended in a draw. Benmark built up Canterlot's marvelous city, while Belle made business off it. Benmark and Belle have always been rivals, but Benmark slowly became a much smaller house then Belle as years past.

When Luna returned, Benmark soon took sides with her and worked off her ideals. This agitated Belle and they did the opposite. A intense economical battle followed, where both families tried to win the opinions of the people and become the superior house of Canterlot. Over time, the 75% that followed dwindled into a 50%, causing a stalemate between the 2 houses. At long last Benmark has caught up to the Belle house and was attempting to once again conquer. The current head of the house, Copper Belle, would have none of it.

Copper was known for many achievements as the modern leader of the house. He was the first to marry a mare with pegasus genes, which ended with have 2 pegasi daughters that'd bring business to Cloudsdale and other pegasus run towns. He built up Belle to it's highest, having spread the house across Equestria. But the most notable thing he did was rebuild Castle Invictus, a secret fortress in the far north east that once belonged to Belle during the time Luna rebelled. The point of this fortress was to fight off another house when, once again, the opinions were between two princesses. Once Luna fell, Castle Invictus was left in ruins until Copper restored it. Once again, a army of hired swords and Belle followers was brought up at this fortress. Copper waged a secret battle against Benmark in the far north where none would know of it happening. The winner would take Canterlot, while the loser would be destroyed and cast out of Canterlot.

Annabella was a little filly born to Diamond Belle, one of the pegasus daughters of Copper. Her father was a business pony, a accountant whow as good with money. Hilgard Pay was his name, and him and Anna's mother started a branch of Belle's notorious mining company in Cloudsdale. They sold gems and jewelry and made quite the profit and living for themselves without being involved much in family affairs. Anna grew up in a lavish life style (Her life basically the same as her bio) until in her college days she was told of this battle. Her father and mother would go to Castle Invictus to aid the Belle's in their attempts.

Belle and Benmark met in the mist of a snowy blizzard in the farthest north of Equestria. A bloody battle waged in the horrible storm where hundreds died for either house. Everybody from Copper to Hilgard fought in the battle, with those unable following close behind. The weather worked to Benmarks favor, and Belle was slaughtered. Copper died on the feild with many other Belle's and stallions, while those who followed behind were also captured. The Belle's put up a fight until the end, a few stallions still stood, but the battle ended when Royal forces closed in on both houses. The remaining from both houses were sentenced to life in the dungeon or put to death in a secret fashion. Both houses were completely and utterly destroyed... Except one.

Most Belle's gave up their name or died on the battlefeild that day. Annabella did not. She had gotten a letter from her mother to come immediately to the dungeons of Canterlot. There, she met her mother before her death, and it was then when Diamond gave Anna the secrets of the house and how to lead it from what she knew. There were no Belle's left, and Anna was now the one and only leader. Diamond was soon killed with the rest of the Belle family that survived the battle, but Anna lived. She returned to Castle Invictus with very few followers.

Anna now vowed to avenge her family. She now held the wealth Belle left behind, and it's legacy. Though she had a plan in life, this was now her destiny. She would restart the Belle house and bring it back to power. It was her destiny, and duty as one with the surname. After half a year of being on power, Anna stays behind the walls of Castle Invictus, planning her moves. Though having problems of her own, such as her confidence and a pregnancy she so far has gotten off to a good start. She will be a major chest piece in the future battles to come.

Drugs are bad, mmmkay?

Name: Wilhelm de Winter

Age: 28 (32 if you include extended canon)
Pony Race: Pegasus
Role/Job: Holder of the Royal Astronomer court position (technically a nobleman), reserve military officer, but generally a scientist and theorist.
Appearance: Navy blue coat of fur; sky-blue eyes, earth-brown hooves, mane and tail a very dark grey shot through with black.
Personality: Dark, cold, calculating. Freezes up with a cross between anxiety and rage when spoken to rudely by someone with a brash and overconfident personality. Brilliant genius in both magical theory and astronomy.

Spends some time obsessing over small things, and has a compulsion for instinctive neatness and order. May arrange objects in a sequence of powers of two. However, due to his military training and strength of will, he does not let this interfere with his work beyond a exceptional neatness to his work and notation. Can easily be disarmed or stunned by gestures of affection, especially a kiss.

Sometimes, he can be abrupt if he's working on something, and often doesn't want to speak when he's busy. If under pressure, he calms down rapidly and can often be the clearest head in the room. He possesses a sharp tongue and a very well-developed sense of sarcasm. Has a penchant for dry wit/black humor, too.

Bio: (I'm going to just kind of copy-paste the bio in here... :P)

Born into a high-class family of socialites in Canterlot, he grew up without many friends, despite his parents' efforts. Young Wilhelm, or Will, as his parents (Friedrich de Winter and Andromeda Eclipse) and sister (Celeste de Winter), called him, spent most of his time locked inside a library, rarely preferring to socialize. When he did, however, it inevitably ended in several caustic remarks about the colt or filly in question's intelligence and/or breeding, which put a end to further calls very quickly. Despite this, he enjoyed a very close relationship with his family, especially his sister. Celeste and him shared roughly the same interests, although she tended to lean more towards music, being employed as a opera singer in the Canterot Operatic Company, starring in such greats like Wagner's Cycle Of The Ring before her death at the age of thirty. Now, moving back to Wilhelm. When he was a young foal, he had spotted a telescope in the local toy store, and begged his parents to buy it. He obtained it for Hearths' Warming Eve, and ended up using it the next night. Carrying up a cup of hot cocoa, his notebook, and a pencil, little Wilhelm opened up the telescope, which he had assembled with the help of his father, and turned it to look at the moon. He scribbled down a brief notation of the craters and a rough sketch, and when he went downstairs after several hours of viewing time, he realized only at the excited exclamations of his family that he had earned his cutie mark.

By his mid-adolescence, he had already applied to Canterlot University, with an immaculate cover letter and accomplishments- though volunteer work was noticeably absent- and was accepted. At the university, however, over the course of a four-year course, Wilhelm was finishing up his studies, majoring in astronomy and minoring in magical theory, a subject he had always enjoyed(although, being simply a Pegasus, he could not practice some of the things he was learning of) when his sister, Celeste, died in a tragic flying accident; during a high-speed acrobatics run, she had apparently lost control in a heavy wind and was smashed into the ground, killing her instantly. He finished the last six months of his study (with a noticeable drop in quality) and then went home, Ph.D in hoof.

This trauma would affect him for the remainder of his life, and although the deep unwillingness to fly ended relatively soon, and despite the calming efforts by his friends and family, he simply shut himself back into his repository of literature and mathematics, and wasted away. During this time, he went back home to his parents, where he planned to stay until he could get a job at the university he graduated from. However, when he became eligible for military service in the Equestrian Royal Army, he joined immediately for unknown reasons; he was never very patriotic, and he's never told anyone why, exactly he joined. During boot camp, he showed proficiency with a bow and arrow, as well as a excellent sense of practical tactics, and was assigned as the designated marksman for his squad and commissioned as an officer. He never got a chance to fight, however, and in the intervening years between attacks by the forces of evil, he turned his gaze up to the sky again.

After publishing a study titled "On the Phenomena of the Equestrian Night Sky" in the prestigious journal known as the Journal of the Equestrian Scientific Academy, he became a full-time astronomer and scientist, based in a small home in Canterlot, being honorably discharged from the Royal Army into the Royal Army Reserve Corps, where he still serves with a sergeant's rank. After three years of work in both fields, the Princesses, impressed, elevated him to the peerage, whereupon he was given a knighthood (which he declined), his current home (which he most definitely accepted) and an appointment as the Royal Astrologer, which he also accepted. Unfortunately for him, he's also responsible for tutoring the odd foal or filly, which he never finds fun, though he can take a liking to his students if he finds them good enough- but good luck passing his famously high standards.

Le Soft Canon Section (Read: Can be omitted from RP)

After a year, he, along with a team of various heroes, was sent into Tartarus to retrieve an artifact of Celestia's, which held a powerful dark magic from one of the Elder Gods. The team fought their way through the Nine Circles, eventually banishing the Alicorn Lord of the Pit and retrieving the artifact, upon which they came back to the Overworld. At this point, all of them became temporary heroes, though it was quickly hushed up, and not many ponies know of their roles, especially that of Wilhelm, who was embarrassed by the recognition and took his own steps to shut it down.

Two years after that, during a visit to the Saddle Arabian National Observatory, Wilhelm was kidnapped by insurgents during the resurgence of the Saddle Arabian Civil War. While they planned to use him as leverage, Wilhelm was broken free by Royalist forces and forcibly conscripted until the end of the conflict. During this time, Wilhelm gradually became more and more disgusted with the events going on, and upon his repatriation to Equestria, Wilhelm only went back for long enough to join the crew of a ship before leaving again. During this voyage, Wilhelm and the crew, including a warrior mare from the frozen north, a deserter from Braytain's armies, and a black magic user from the infamous Darkmane family, recovered ancient pirate treasure, defeated the sea wyrm at the center of Dead Mare's Cross, and explored ancient temples used by the ancestors of the current Zebra Confederation.

When the ship returned, Wilhelm returned to his duties as the Diarchy's Royal Astronomer, and such it was for another year before he entered the Arena of Gladiators, meeting everypony from the members of his old sailing crew to the even older Tartarus adventurers. New faces included Annette Brightstrings, Wilhelm's marefriend, and Lektra Bolt, Wilhelm's friend and sometimes rival. After a stint in the Arena, he returned to his duties, and has reportedly has enough adventure to last a lifetime.

For This RP:

Wilhelm has always been a practical and ambitious stallion, but this is the greatest opportunity he has ever had. Yet again, his aversion to fame shows up, but why bother being famous, or holding a business, or having that idiotic thing called "a majority market share"? No, what Wilhelm wants is to be the one holding the strings to the ponies who have the above. And what Wilhelm wants, though it may take a long time, he will get.

A very interesting profile. I read the bio from beginning to end, and it held my attention. I would say it fits very well in the nature of the roleplay, and maybe in Game of Thrones  ?

Anywho, just a couple of tweaks and you'll be accepted! First, you might want to have another look at the rules, or point it out to me if I happen to have my idiot-mode turned on today.

Otherwise, I've only a minor contention with her bio. Given that the Princesses aparently caught wind of the shadow war and stomped both Houses into a runny paste, it seems likely that they would have stripped them of their Titles of Nobility. So Belle would effectively be a commoner, even if she did possess the hidden wealth of her family (the public wealth would have been stripped from them along with their title.)

So how did Belle both escape imprisonment and retain her title of Nobility? (Send me a PM if you want to chat about it! )

@@Orion Caelum,

A scientist? Neat! Though you're missing the same important bit as Star-Lord. Once again, if my idiot-mode is on and I didn't notice it, please point out where I missed it.

Yeah... the 'le canon soft' bit might be nice to cut out. It's cool certainly! But doesn't exactly fit...  Y'know?

Got it!

...note to self, do not write long posts at 2AM, especially if the RP has a password.

And as for soft canon, it's always RP-optional, and each chapter of his life can be handled on a case-by-case basis, varying his age to account for what is being included or excluded.

Anna was never a part of family affairs ever. Her birth and existence is probably completely unknown because she has never been of any significance to the Belle cause. Maybe Celestia does know of her being alive, but she's pretty much been locked up in Castle Invictus. Celestia doesn't know who Anna is or what she even looks like, and probably doesn't want to wage another war. Belle is out of Canterlot and has nearly nothing left, so I'm sure she's going to let it slide unless it becomes a problem again.

She only killed those in the battle or up north, not the entire family. As punishment for the family as a whole, she destroyed the company and banished them from Canterlot only.
