Probably has Celestia approved locks or something contrived like that to make sure it can only ever be turned on something evil. Or the magic might only have an effect on evil things in the first place? Since Discord's a being of chaos he might always be affected, even if he's not necessarily evil. Twilight made a big mess a couple of times like how she messed with time, messed up Ponyville. Rainbow Dash made a big mess of Cloudsdale for selfish purposes and she still hates losing and would rather cheat, Rarity got overly proud with her butterfly wings etc. Many of the things the ponies did were for selfish reasons. If a pony ever went balls to the wall evul (Starlight Glimmer may or may not be toeing that line, Sunset Shimmer probably could have been elementsed in her demon mode if the elements existed in the human world) like Luna -> Nightmare Moon the Elements will probably then consider them a worthy target. That's why I speculate he can no longer get blasted by harmony harmony oh love, he's fundementally too nice and relatively harmless now. Memory Lane 131 June 25, 2015 Share June 25, 2015 The Elements of Harmony, as I always understood them, are supernatural relics designed to react in the presence of negative energy. What they actually do is diffuse those negative energies and purify the source, like an exorcism. Those with goodness in them to salvage would be purified, like Nightmare Moon to Princess Luna. I'm sure the same rule would apply to anyone. Though I'm sure there is a threshold below which the Elements of Harmony simply will not resonate. Discord is an interesting case. He is chaos itself, so to speak. Chaos is inherently negative, right? So then I reason, when the Elements of Harmony encounter something that can't be purged of negativity, they cause a petrification effect if not eradicating the target entirely. We can look at it this way instead; Discord is likely a source of chaos magic, which prevents his purification. Nightmare Moon was Princess Luna possessed by darkness. Luna herself is not an inherent negativity, which explains why she and Discord respectively were affected differently. I do wonder though... is there a significant sentience behind the Elements of Harmony? A guiding force like that would certainly be interesting. PoisonClaw 8,173 June 25, 2015 Share June 25, 2015 Absolutely nothing would happen. @@Jeric hits it right on the head, but it could also be possible that the Elements will only activate in the presence of evil/negativity/disharmony/a dark soul, ect. If used against an innocent, they wouldn't be capable of generating the energy to power a lightbulb. It might even cause some kind of feedback and outright reject the user if attempted to be used against an innocent or pure-hearted individual. Either that or the pony gets transformed into an alicorn with some rainbow power, maybe Guess we won't find out since the Tree took 'em back. sweetolebob18 728 June 26, 2015 Share June 26, 2015 The thing to remember is that they are The Elements of HARMONY, not the Elements of Sweetness & Light or even the Elements of Justice. IMO, they worked against Discord, not because he is evil, but because he is Anti Harmony. They worked against Nightmare Moon because her plans for Eternal Night upset the balance in the Force. As Jeric pointed out, the Elements seem to have some self awareness (or the Tree does). VengefulStrudel 1,495 June 26, 2015 Share June 26, 2015 Now that I think about it, the Crystal Heart's magic hurt Sombra even before he turned evil, when he was just a colt. Though the Heart and the Elements are different, and the Heart was pretty much made to deter/destroy shadow ponies. I'm guessing the Elements would function similarly, even if someone is not evil in the slightest bit, if they are disharmonious, then it's probably gonna hurt.
