For IEMs I agree with him, those things don't need much amplification to operate well. However there are situations where greater power on the headphone output do benefit. The solution to the battery issue is not to remove balanced output from Digital Audio Players, but to implement class G amplifiers in them. So they only unlock that amount of power if the device needs it. Headphones don't use common mode rejection, but even if they did, the cables are far too short for EMI to even matter in most situations.

"Use your ears" best advice from an expert I've heard, no pun intended.

An audio device only sounds as good as our senses can perceive and that's all there is to it. No scam artistry, no jargon, just straight up logic. Don't waste money on gear you don't need.
