Animation Directions for a Total Newbie

This fandom is renowned for it's amazing fan made animations. Ever since I joined this community way back in 2012, I vowed to make something worth while to share with the internet... And... Well, aside from a couple shoddy PMV's and Gmod animations, my creative touch has eluded me :derp:

I've always been fascinated with animation, YouTube has taught me that all you need is a copy of Flash and some talent and you'll have something to work with, but every time I've attempted to get into animation, I've either lost motivation due to abysmal results or simply a lack of creativity.

I guess what I'm asking for is anyone with even minor experience with animation could perhaps offer some tips or guidance on how to get into animation as a hobby. I'm currently thinking about working with Source Filmmaker as a starting point, but in the future I would love to get into Flash animation... As long as my drawing skills do not let me down

Thanks!

Small steps might be the best way to go if you want to start out in animation. You don't need to work on a huge project right away, you just need to work from the ground up. You should start at trying to learn some of the important steps of animation, like a walk cycle or expressions.

Especially if you want to do SFM, you have to tinker around with the program and learn tutorials before you should start working on projects.

I don't plan on breaking into a massive 20 minute project, that's for sure :P I have minor experience with the mlp models in sfm, so figuring out the simpler stuff like you said might be a good starting place at least. Thanks, do you have much experience with sfm?

I've only really played around with SFM for a little bit, so I don't have the best experience. But I do watch a bunch of SFM videos and know some steps on animation. I mean there are a ton of tutorials for you to use about SFM. You can also study from other Source Filmmakers, and take examples from real life into your work.

@Raritas, as you're seeking for advice on how to create animation, I've moved your topic from Media Discussion to Video & Animation.
