How long between the Reign of Discord, Tyranny of Sombra, and Coup of NMM?

I will give the facts we know.

 

• They ALL took place at least 1000 years ago. Sombra happened exactly 1000 years ago, as that was the time that the Crystal Empire was gone. This is also true for Nightmare Moon, as she was in the moon 1000 years. Discord however, has no definite time.

 

• The elements were first used on Discord, then Sombra, then Nightmare Moon. We know the elements were used for the very first time on Discord. It is unconfirmed whether it was used on more ponies than Sombra before or after NMM.

 

Now I will give Explanations that by the information I was given, can be derived as true.

 

• Starswirl was alive during the reign of Discord. He banished the Sirens over 1000 years ago. So he was alive at in some time period between 1000 and 2000 years ago. He was alive at the end of the reign (this is canon). Which means Discords reign must also have ended at the very most, 2000 years ago. 1000<Discord <2000.

 

• Sombra's Tyranny and Nightmare Moon's unsuccesful coup happened within years, perhaps months of each other. Nightmare moons return was in Season 1, and Sombra's Return was in season 3. Which means NMM happened before Sombra... Wait! That cant be right, because Luna was there to banish Sombra. We meet again Plot Holes, we meet again.

 

So lets assume that i misheard Celestia when she said 1000 years ago (refering to Crysal Empire), and actually said over 1000 years ago.

 

•So this is what we have gathered. 2000 years ago > Discord > Sombra > NMM > 1000 years ago.

 

Any Information about Starswirl, the elements, or these events can help us derive some more precise numbers.

 

These are very wide time frames. Does anyone know anything from the Extended Universe perhaps, or simply something I am missing that can whittle down these numbers?

All we got are headcanons.

 

As far as I can tell, Sombra's Coup and subsequent fall of the empire are what destabilized the north, causing the migration told by Hearth's Warming Eve. The infighting between the tribes helped either kickstart or further fuel Discord's reign. NMM was obviously the most recent. 

 

Think about this though: 3 whole seasons, took place in the span of a year. From MMM's return to the plunder vine infestation, took place between two summer solstice celebrations. All that craziness in one calendar year? For all we know, the crystal empire's fall, Discords petrification and Luna's exile could've all gone down the same day.

But ya, we dont have a lot of solid information to go on about the lore. The show like to use the "1000 years ago" thing A LOT.

Implying the princesses weren't alive before hearth's warming. Yes, Unicorns did control the sun and moon, but that doesn't mean Celly & Lulu weren't born yet, or weren't powerful enough to stop Sombra.

 

But yes, agreed that we only have speculation to go by with such gaps in the lore.  Centering such major events around the same time is starting to become a bit of an oversight on the writer's part.
