Spike grows for being greedy? How does that work?

'Rainbow Dash'

Recommended Posts

Hey, this is Rainbow Dash, the greatest pony of all.

OK, Twilight told me that Spike grows giant when he's greedy and collects things. How does that work? That makes NO sense.

Can somebody explain this to me please.

That's actually how old dragon legends worked.

They accumulated treasure throughout centuries, growing alongside their stockpile.

My bigger question is why does Spike want to know what Dragons do later down the line in 'A Dragon Quest'? He experienced himself that Dragons hoard and sit on valueable things x.x;

Spike's growth is a metaphor for Capitalism.

Or, for that matter, the way Socialism plays out in the real world.

Which is probably why I find that episode so depressing. :blush:

Actually, there are a lot of older mythology about dragons regarding greed, enchanted hoards and how a dragon's power is relative to their hoard. What they did with Spike being greedy and growing to his greed isn't anything new. MLP adapted it from older mythology.

Come to think of it, I read somewhere that Spike's dragon behavior in SomE was directly borrowed from the D&D monster manual about dragons. Not really surprised because Hasbro owns D&D too.

Oh and this is probably just a guess but I think the magic of teleportation is somewhat relevant to unicorns in D&D world. I don't play D&D but I used to watch an old cartoon show about D&D and unicrons were coveted for their teleportation magic.

I was being a bit abstruse for the sake of my own amusement, but I do appreciate your well-informed, helpful and decidedly less abstruse reply. :)

Apparently that's just how all dragons grow...idk

It makes me wonder, is spike never gonna fully mature as long as he avoids being greedy? That's pretty.....odd, that a species can't reach full maturity past baby-hood without hoarding lots and lots of physical items and becoming more and more greedy. Perhaps he'll still grow up, but since he's not going to be a greedy hoarder he wont be a ferocious monster when he's an adult.

Or alternatively, since it's a show about candy colored talking ponies

Don't question MLP FIM logic, like some say. Just go with the flow.

The whole idea amused me. In fasntasy fiction we see that the oldest (and therefore largest) dragons have the largest hordes. Normally it is assumed that they accumulate more treasure as they mature/grow. Buit to see this cause/effect turned on its head was a clever idea.

It doesn't contradict the fiction it is inspired by, and makes a twisted kind of sense. Also reminded me of Warhammer Orcs, where the most successful leaders grow in size, and the largest orcs tend to be more successful :)

His body grows as the greed corrupting him grows. Material possession is also in the equation.

Body Mass=BM Greed=G Material Possession=MP

If we state that Spike usually have a BM of 8, a MP of 4 and a G of 3, then:

BM=MP^(G*0,50)

Also, he gets gasses when he becomes exited.
