slice of life Fanfiction: The "Like Me" Series

I was bored so I figured I'd showcase the series I've been in production of for some years now. It's slowed down, but essentially it's a six part series that started back in 2012 with a one shot called "Like Me", which evolved into an ongoing series.

 

Bit of History

 

Back in 2011, I produced the first fanfiction I ever made not just for MLP but anything... Ever. It's still ongoing (entering its 40th chapter) I did little in the way of one-shots. I did another short 6 part story that was also in the dark genre, and a one shot that was another dark story. I wanted to do something that stuck more to the ideals of the show in terms of teaching lessons without the grittiness, but still keeping the darker more adult undertones. Thus the original Like Me was created in a matter of days and was looked over by several friends before being submitted to EQD, where it got featured actually.

 

After that I decided to turn it into a trilogy following the other CMC members, but by the third story I realized that there was a lot more that was still going on in the background and it would take another 3 stories before I could finish what I wanted to tell. Thus it ended up being a 6 part series that is actually finally getting closer to being over.

 

 

Like Me

 

 

 

"Magic works in strange ways, and seems to manifest in every pony differently. It's always about how one uses their gifts that magic has given them that matters. Sweetie Belle has learned one thing for certain in the past few years, and that is some gifts can quickly turn into a curse."

 

Like Me is a tale about growing up and Sweetie Belle coming of age and having to deal with a very adult problem. It's a story of a time period in one's life where innocence is ended and the reality of a harsher adult world creeps up on you.

 

 

Bad Habit

 

 

"When it feels like you have no one you can count on, you'll turn anywhere for that little pick me up. Sometimes though, it can be a bad habit to have, and even harder to break when it gets you in deep. Growing up can be tough, especially when you feel like no one really understands you. Scootaloo learns the hard way in a tale of friendship, family and coming of age."

 

Once again, like the first story Scootaloo's tale is a coming of age story, but one of a different shade. She is going through puberty and is dealing with very difficult emotions coupled with finding it difficult to communicate. In many ways she's a very "typical" teenager in that it sometimes really does feel like "no one will understand". Bad Habit serves as a Mid-quel and partial sequel, as the story starts in the middle of the events of Like Me and ends a few months after it's over, putting its ending around late 2014.

 

Advance

 

 

"The age of technology has hit Equestria. Ponies everywhere are connecting in ways they never felt imaginable. In this world of constant digital connection, Apple Bloom is learning that things change as you get older. A new Equestria is being made, and that means a new Ponyville is coming with it, but young Apple Bloom isn't certain if she's ready to let go of the old Ponyville first."

 

Advance definitely stands differently from the first two stories as it goes the route of side-stories. While there is a clear and defined tale being told, Advance aimed to branch into side stories of other ponies lives in the background while it addressed the primary story. As technology and pseudo-cellphones end up taking over, the information age serves as a backdrop to a much deeper problem. It also was the first story in the series to sport an Epilogue. It takes place roughly a year and a half after the events of Bad Habit Starting at the beginning of 2016.

 

Precious

 

 

 

"Life has a way of throwing lots of challenges in your way sometimes. Sometimes those challenges are a bit too much, and they can truly test your will to carry on and your determination to make it to the other side of this long journey. Fluttershy knows these challenges quite well, and she is trying to find something, anything to escape the torment that seems to be constantly placed in her path. Survival is always important, at least that's what she's always been told.

 

In her mind, she sees it all as just being moved from one owner to the next owner. All life is, is a constant swap of ownership."

 

Precious is the first story to not follow one of the CMC and also had the least "defined" connection with the other stories. While characters and plot points from the other stories play a role, Precious can in fact be read as a stand alone. Though it still ties in majorly with the storyline if you have read the others. It follows Fluttershy's struggle in trying to find a place in the world and focuses on the idea of second chances. Currently it's the most recently "released" story in the series and also the longest, nearly twice as long as the original Like Me. Precious also takes place around 2 years after Advance. Set in mid to late 2018.

 

My Forgotten Story

 

This is the one I'm working on currently (no cover yet), I can't spoil too much but it is set to take place in late 2019 following the events of an accident that befalls the protagonist. It will deal heavily with a morally ambiguous choice that is not going to have a clear "good or bad" answer. Essentially something that will have negative outcomes regardless of what is chosen. It's expected to be finished some time within the next few weeks.

 

Unnamed Final Story

 

No title yet obviously, and I have not begun actual work on it as I am finishing up My Forgotten Story, but I have already plotted out how this story is going to go and what the big conclusion to the series is going to be. It will be the only story in the series also to have contributions from another author who pitched some ideas for a really big ending. Naturally after 6 stories, I wanted a pay off that felt big, epic and shocking. This story will definitely give that, and answer all the remaining unanswered questions as it revisits roots from the original story.
