[The Pixelated Pony 883]

Sparkle arrived at the police station checked in. She was half an hour late. She picked up her assignment and looked it over (great Stakeout...) She thought tossing the papers on the vacant passenger seat. (I'm so glad they didn't let me drive them this place is a mess)

 

She drove to the Stakeout location and picked up coffee on the way. (Ahh coffee sweet necter of the gods) she thought drinking it before looking over the papers again

Deadbolt walked along the street, his mind with the shadows as he lowered his head. He hated being a security guard, and with the reports of crime he had been hearing about, he was not in the best of moods. His current rotation had him working late into the night, and even though he lived quite close to that particular bank, he hated walking in the dark.

 

Adjusting his stained uniform - some old biddy had splashed hot coffee on him because she was having a bad day and decided to take it out on him - he coughed, shivering as the wet stain let the cold air through the thin cloth. The cold weather certainly never helped, and most of his hard-earned bits went out to make sure he had a place to live.

 

As he rounded the final corner to where he lived, he stopped. Right in front, he could see a crash scene right in front of his building. Shaking his head, he slowly made his way to the front door, trying to fish out his keys.

 

"'Of course I can work this weekend. It's not like my PARENTS were visiting me or anything.' I hate that witch. Head of Security or not, she's out for my head." He sighed as he tried to find his keys; he was quite certain he had put them inside his pocket- he stopped. He had changed out of the OTHER uniform because of a hole in the pocket... which meant his keys were probably inside his small apartment.

 

"Dammit. Of all the times to have ONE ripped pocket." He turned, looking at the car. A weird black substance coated the front bumper of the vehicle, though it seemed like oil from his point of view. Without anything else to do, he sighed and walked towards the grouping of ponies around it. He backed away as a tow truck approached, along with another car. Sighing, he walked slowly back towards the bank where he worked.

 

It was going to take some explaining as to why he had to go back to work only ten minutes after he'd left.

The thing continued dashing across the landscape, into it's bunker. It puts the containers of the black sludge down, and pours some of it into a large generator. The generator is attached to a titanic machine, with many parts, buttons, switches and levers. There are screen in different places, and a few gauges. One such goes up, after the filling of the generator. The thing starts tapping away at some buttons, and it quickly becomes apparent, to any familiar with technology, that it's running some kind of diagnosis. Mostly by what it says after.

"Hmm... Everything's going as expected... It's a good thing I hit the bank as a distraction. Let's see here...There's still a few things I need, to get this working..." It mutters to itself. It's been planning this for a while, now. Soon, nothing will stand in it's way...

Eric watched as the Woman willing to help him leaves him in the cold

"So she was an officer as well, heh, what a girl."

 

It's very cold and Eric puts his hands in his pockets and notices Mist returning. Eric then responds to Mist as he asked about the strange substance on the front of the car. Eric walks to the front of the car and checks investigates the strange substance on his car. He then asks Mist to stay away from it as it could be dangerous. Eric doesn't touche or interact with the black substance and waits for the pick-up truck to arrive.

 

As the pick-up truck arrives Eric turns to Mist and hands him a strange envelope with details 'not to open until home'. Eric greets the pick-up truck driver and tells him about the situation as he's loading his car onto the hook. The pick-up driver drives Eric and Mist to the station and asks if we'd like the car fixed up at the garage, Eric refuses and tells him to leave it in the police compound. 

 

Eric turns to Mist

"It's late, lets work on this tomorrow Mist. I've had enough drama for one day."  

 

"Okay Eric, I'll see you back at the station tomorrow," said Mist politely. On the way home Mist looked at the envelope he had received from Eric and wondered what it could be. He wanted to open it there and then but Eric told him to wait until he got home. Luckily for Mist it didn't take long for him to get back to his apartment. Without hesitation he opened the envelope. Mist almost couldn't believe it. It was a Christmas card.

 

The Card Read:

 

Dear Mist,

I don't always say this but working on cases with you is always really fun. So keep up the good work and have a merry Christmas.

Your friend Eric.

 

Mist smiled as he put the card on his coffee table, "what do you know?" he said to himself, "The old stallion has a heart after all." Mist sat down and turned on the TV.

Deadbolt returned to work, sighing as he pushed the door open. His keys were lying on the ground just inside the door, which caused a small amount of panic. He looked over to the nearby wall and smiled as he saw a piece of string stuck there. With a yank, he pulled it off, tying it in a loop through his keys, hanging them around his neck.

 

"Not losing them this time." With a little hop, he left the building, locking the door behind him.

"Okay Eric, I'll see you back at the station tomorrow," said Mist politely. On the way home Mist looked at the envelope he had received from Eric and wondered what it could be. He wanted to open it there and then but Eric told him to wait until he got home. Luckily for Mist it didn't take long for him to get back to his apartment. Without hesitation he opened the envelope. Mist almost couldn't believe it. It was a Christmas card.

 

The Card Read:

 

Dear Mist,

Eric Arrived home, he threw his jacket to the side and sat down on the cough. Eric thought about the Christmas card he sent to his old companion Mist and it gave him warm feelings inside. Eric then turned on the TV to see the Local News was all over the accident that recently happened involving Eric and Mist. The News started making up stories and creating fear where there was no fear to be had. Eric had enough of the TV and turned it off, he then proceeded to bed.

 

The next day sirens could be heard as if there was going to be a bombing. Eric got up from bed and looks out his window only to see the most horrific of things. Eric saw a huge Lizard walking through Manehattan destroying everything in its path! Eric then saw the giant Lizard destroy the police headquarters he worked at. Eric had no words and only proceeded to help the locals get away from this creature!

 

As Eric got outside he could hear nothing but the scream of the monster and the people trying to get away from it. Eric saw a Elderly Pony getting trampled on while people run in fear, he goes to help the old woman. Eric bends over and pushes some other people out the way only to find the old pony was dead. Eric got up and was in a daze as to what he had just witnessed, he then gets interrupted by Mist trying to snap him out of it.

I notice the pounding getting close. Damn it; whatever it is, better not try to interrupt my work... I think about what I need to complete my project, and decide that there are only a few things left. It's a good thing I robbed the bank for the Necrofoalicon... I had pilfered local Nuclear Power Plant, and spilled some on the car. It's a good thing it's not very radioactive, or I'd have left a terrible trail. Now, I need to hook into the powergrid, and plan a sacrifice. It's a good thing I made my base near an orphanage... This is going to be easy. Soon, I shall have unlimited power, should things all go according to plan. I smirk, forgetting the ruckus outside.

Sparkle felt a slightly disturbance in her stomach "oh great peeing is the last thing I need... I wonder if Eric could take over?" She got out and walked into the nearest phone booth and called him. After he didn't pickup she tried the station. "Hello? Jess? Yeah it's me Sparkle... Yes I need to pee... No I can't go in a tennis ball can! Just try calling Eric... Yes that Eric who else would it be? Thank-you... Bye" She hung up and walked back to her car mumbling to herself as she went.

And I think I may have found something, but I'll only tell you if you snap out of it."

"Snap out of it Eric," said Mist trying to snap Eric out of his daze, "we can mourn later, right now we have to stop that lizard thing." Mist stood there for a moment trying to think of what else he could say to bring Eric back to reality, "Uh....." suddenly Mist thought of what to say, "hey Eric I just remembered, before I came here I went to the library to research Umbrums. And I think I may have found something, but I'll only tell you if you snap out of it."

 

Eric notices Mist trying his hardest to snap Eric out of his dazed state. Eric quickly comes back to the situation and grabs Mist and pulls him into cover. Eric tells Mist "There is a monster destroying the city, Umbrums will have to wait." Suddenly huge winged monsters start taking to the skies and picking ponies from the ground and flying off with them. Eric looks up to the sky and says "What is going on in this city!" Eric then turns to Mist and tells him "We're going to need weapons, lots of weapons, big weapons, anything to defend ourselves. But first I think we need to find a safe and secure place to hide till this all calms down, do you know of a place Mist?".

The screams had finally become distracting. That thing has bother me for the last time! I stalk out of my lab, taking hold of a device in my magic, which turns to dark magic as my form takes on a smokey appearance. Like a proper Umbrum. I make my way out onto the streets, and strike one of the flying creatures with a blast of dark magic, causing it to see what terrifies it most. It falls to the ground, body paralysed, and I approach it.

"I hate it when something distracts me from my research..." I speak plainly, before manifesting a hoof from my form, smashing it's head beneath. My hoof returns to smoke, and I drift off, approaching the large creature with my device in tow. I needed to get in range, as the thing had only enough for a single use. I was going to fire an experimental weapon at the thing. And it was going to "Cease". I only had enough Quantum Energy for a single use of my Temporal Destablizer. If I wanted more, I'd have to fire off my Hedron Collider again, and that would be too risky.

as summer ran away from the monster she heard somepony talk about a shelter in an artstore nearby 'exactly what i need' I said to myself. I only knew of one artstore anywhere near here, so it had to be there. When he started running I bumped into him 'o my, i am so terribly sorry' I said. I flashed him a look with my blue eyes to distract him while I was trying to steal his key. or my key in a few seconds, hopefully.

Mist thought for a while. Suddenly he thought of somewhere. "Actually I do know a place. My friend owns an art store a few blocks from here. In it is a storage basement that doubles as a bomb settler. I can't think of any where safer. And my friend's out of town for the week so I have the key," he said showing Eric a small key. "Now come on we'd better get there before we get attacked by that lizard thing." Mist then began running towards the art store.

 

Eric followed Mist to the store. The Monster passed by them and the Army was on its tail giving it everything they got. The Air Force managed to push back the flying creatures. Eric sighed with relief and looked at Mist "What the hell is going on in this city Mist?" Eric went outside and it was quiet for the most part. Eric then shouted to Mist "I think we're good to walk freely now Mist, lets see how the station is holding up."

[During the monster attack]

 

Sparkle drove back to her house as fast as legaly possible she unlocked the door and ran inside just as one of the flying creatures tore the door off. Running upstairs she tripped on ANOTHER toy car and saw Sentinel cowering in fear underneath the bed. She slowly approached him. He jumped into her hooves crying and she picked him up and put him on her back. There was a loud smash as her car was crushed underneath the monster's massive weight. (Good thing I'm insured...) Sparkle thought looking at the crumpled pile of metal and rubber.

 

A stallion arrived at the house and knocked on the wooden frame. It was Sparkle's ex they didn't talk much but they did a bit "Sparkle!? Y...your alive? " he said looking at the smashed up car and house

"I know miracle isn't it?" Sparkle said watching the monster walk away and through a wall

"C'mon we better get somewhere safe" he opened up a manhole (or would it be ponyhole?) And jumped down into the sewers Sparkle had no option but to follow him.

The shadow thing sighs, annoyance quickly turning to boredom.

"Why do superweapons always have a lengthy start up time..." It asks itself, rhetorically.

Soon enough, it begins humming to itself, at about thirty rells to countdown end.

"Doo doodoo, doo, doo doodoo doo. Doo doodoo, doo, doo doodoo doo. Doo doodoo, do, doo doodoo doo; doo doodoo! I'm a chargin' my attack!" It sings, as it finally beeps, signalling that it's ready for one time use. He aims it carefully at the beast, as it prepares a beam of something unknown to send at the thing, frying the weapon. It launches a beam of obviously dark magic, enhanced beyond comparison (unless one cast by an alicorn). It seems to strike the beast upon the brow, but nothing visibly happens. The thing, however can feel itself in gruesome agony, as it's mind is being torn apart, piece by psychic piece. Until all that remains is the tiny spark of existence. It's been rendered effectively brain-dead.

The shadow thing mutters, "Make me waste my last one, why don't you..." It wanders back into it's lair, sealing the porthole behind it. It has better things to worry about, than some weak-minded monster, attempting to ravage the city. The military can deal with the others, it has work to do. It has a World-Eater to summon. It has to contact the Jabberwocky. There is no "vorpal blade" to speak off, nothing to go "one-two, one-two, and through and through". Nothing to go "snicker-snack". And there are certainly no Heroes to go "galumphing" anywhere...

Sparkle's house crumbled into the street above the three of them. "Great thanks Ember we're trapped in a sewer. And I couldn't think of a worse pony to be in here with. Well maybe your wife... I hate her" Sparkle said wandering the dark tunnels "what was that?" Ember said looking at Sparkle "oh umm nothing" she replied lifting a sewer entrance opposite the police station and climbing out Sentinel still on her back

Eric and Mist Arrive at the Police Station and it's partly in ruins and in need on repairs. "Well looks like we're going to need a new place of work, all my files are surely destroyed." Eric then notices and giant beam of what seemed like Dark Energy in the distance stretching quite the distance. "What is that, this city has gone to hell and back it would seem."

 

Eric looks at the beam for the short time that it was up. "Well I've already got enough on my plate to be taking up more problems, the local police will just need to deal with this one." Eric then returns to Mist and asks about what he knew about Umbrums before the attack. "So what is this Umbrum thing you were mentioning? And before you say we should get somewhere more private."

He had it up to HERE with those annoying buggers! They were wrecking a city that was supposed to be a sacrifice! He couldn't very well live up to his father's name and title if he didn't rule a place! How was he to do that? Usurp an empire! And that's what he saw here! And how could it NOT be one? It appears to be a huge, expansive place, with larger bounds of technology than what he'd otherwise see! They even had automobiles! PONIES! This would do PERFECTLY! It's no Crystal Empire, but it would certainly do! It even had the tech needed in his device! And they used it to power things! Oh, liquid eridium was a WONDERFUL thing! Too bad some got on that car he passed... Oh well, the owner could deal with it; he had the look of one who's seen death, so he probably knew how to handle a murderous animated car.

He looked around and he was certain that no one was around he turned to Eric and began to speak, "okay so I was at the library studying up on Umbrums and I found a page detailing their shadow form. It said that Umbrums can occasionally, when in shadow form, leave behind traces of themselves. Usually in the form of black sticky goo. I think you can see where I'm getting at."

"This is quite a find Mist, we should probably keep this under wraps for the time being. I think it's time we started putting all our evidence we have together. We use this place you found as a base of operations for the time being, lets get started." Eric left Mist to clean-up the abandoned building while he went to grab a few things from the remnants of his work place. As Eric was going through the rubble of his once office, he came across a picture of Detective Sparkle looking rather seductive but unaware the picture was taken. Eric turned the picture round to view the back and it read "property of Mist, hands off!"  Eric chuckled a little at Mist's little interest and held onto the picture until he returned to Mist. "I'm back Mist! And I found this from your office I suppose haha."

Sparkle saw Eric running out of the rubble of the Police station. She turned to Ember. " hey don't you have a wife you should y'know be keeping safe?" She said more focused on Eric "your right! I gotta go!" Ember ran off and out of sight... Leaving Sparkle and Sentinel on their own. "Mom? Where are we going now? I'm tired..." Sentinel said pressing his head against his mom's neck "we've got a pony to catch" Sparkle said running after Eric with the speed of a racing pony

I could've sworn I had this locked in my desk drawer." Mist heard what he had just said and blushed, "I mean this isn't mine, I've never seen it before in my life."

Deadbolt stood ramrod stiff, staring at what used to be the police station. Due to the massive amount of damage, he had been given the rest of the day off from his guard shift, but seeing the whole police station just become a pile of rubble was something that shattered what he knew of his world.

 

"I... I have no words," he stated, walking slowly backwards. He had barely survived the lizard attack himself, shaking as he walked until his legs gave out from under him, tears flowing from his eyes as he sat on the ground, the sheer amount of fear coursing through his body forcing the tears out. He wiped his eyes, watching as a couple of other ponies galloped away from the rubble. Clearing his tears, he breathed deep, trying to silence the fear.

 

"T-That was too close, but if something's going on, they probably know." He galloped as hard as he could after the ponies rushing away from the scene. He could feel his baton lightly bumping against his side as he charged after them, intent on at least getting some answers for what in Equestria had happened shortly before.

"Yeah, what is it?" asked Mist as he turned around to see for himself. When he saw it was his picture of Sparkle he rushed over and took it off Eric, "where did you get this? I could've sworn I had this locked in my desk drawer." Mist heard what he had just said and blushed, "I mean this isn't mine, I've never seen it before in my life."

Sparkle ran up to the door and knocked on it twice " hey! Eric! I know your in there! I need to ask you something! I'm not afraid of breaking the door down!" She said still pounding on the door "Mr Eric? Could you let us in please?" Sentinel said shaking with fear "please... I'm scared the big monster might come back and take my mom away from me" he'd was almost crying after his near death experience with the monster
