Why are some ponys tall and others short?

I haven't seen all of MLP, I'm mostly through season 4, but what I've noticed, and it's kind of bothered me, is that all ponys that are "important" or "extraordinarily pretty" are significantly taller than regular ponys. For example, Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, Princess Candance, Fleur De Lis, and so on so forth.

Does anyone know if there's a reason why..? Or does that bother anyone else?

When you're tasked with the creation of hundreds and hundreds of characters there's a point where you can't just keep on with different manes and colors. Therefore, the designers opted for utilizing new shapes and structures to add a new air for the viewers, whereas lifting the weight that conceiving new characters (which were only differentiated by their mane, cuties and colors)represented off their shoulders.

I commend them for maintaining such consistency for more than 4 seasons though, it isn't easy to come up with so many characters with the limitations they had.

It's not really a thing that has to do with older ponies; without spoiling anything, in S5 there's a semi-important pony who has the same general body shape as average ponies.

It's just a matter of genetics, really. Certain ponies, like say Cheese Sandwich or the Flim Flam brothers are tall, and others, like say the Mane 6, are just average sized. A lot of the important ponies, though, that are tall are most likely just tall as a coincidence, nothing more really.

It could simply be a minor physical trait the writers wanted to use to differentiate some supporting characters from the others. Sassy Saddles was tall...as was Trender Hoof. Mr.CAKE is another.....I don't actually think that "the tall trait" is o ly for the important ponies. Its....simply a way to tell one from another. Or they were simply born that way by genetics. Like how there are short people and then there are tall people. I mean this is a good question, but I personally never saw anything deep into it.

Notice how characters whose being older is emphasized tend to be taller? Celestia the teacher, big brother Shining Armor and ex-foalsitter Cadance... I feel like it helps the target audience see them as the grownups (with the Mane 6 being audience surrogates).

I think it's looking too deep into it; it's just a design quirk. By that token, why ar ponies in earlier generations exactly the same size and body type?

There's also the traditional design quirk that male characters are taller, female characters are shorter, and so on,

Personally, I think it's all about the Princesses. They're important because they're alicorns. They're very tall. Therefore, fashion would move so that tall ponies are 'beautiful'.

This happens a lot in RL. Nobility, no matter what their actual appearance, set the standards for that culture's beauty. If the Duchess had no teeth, because they all fell out? Then all the fashionable people had their teeth pulled, or blacked them out.
