Before you ask no, its not Little Pip lol.

 

Alright so this is the issue I am having. Like I know people like to say 'bad oc' on like youtube n stuff, I know this place doesn't have nearly as much mean people (they tend to be constructive criticists here I imagine, and if not the offending behavior is likely corrected)

 

But I am self-conscious about my OC idea.

 

Basically what I love are cephalopods, the brain, mouth-watering-ness, logic stuff (though I'm disorganized), and I figured well my OC might be a little OP. See I want to be  ashapeshifter which prefers a pony form but isn't a changeling. I was thinking something closer to a Draconequus for powers, and I do love colorful stuff, so I feel my OC is very borderline stereotypical bad OC. I know keeping it simpler is more refreshing though so I am not quite sure I need to be this complicated in my approach, but I used to change my mind alot about which OC I should be. Heck I used to do so as a kid when I was growing up since I was 6.

 

But the simple way to say it is I want to be like you know, at the least like one of those ponies composed of cake or such but for me its Zebra gum marshmallow rope and yogurt  (bubblegum flavor) and I want to be from a higher dimension and simply currently contained in that form (preferred form) because I like to utilize the entirety of fiction to prevent indecision, and because certain fictions force me to take certain stances in a way(like eldritch things I argue are knowable [to mortals], just not very easily knowable and some sources say they are unknowable for mortals or such. Besides how can a form so complex exist or people would have had similar responses to things with the illusion of being as those are.)

I mean not as hideous as an eldritch abomination though, or at least a rainbowy awesome one with nicer looking tentacles or such that forces people to drool from awesome flavors coming to mind instead of alternate mind alteration-from-presence effects hehehe. Its basically a projection of electrical neural activity from a cosmic entity outside of that universe which is my true form.    :comeatus:         

 

But also I don't like always being yummy delicious I like having biological shapeshifter biology at times, like an earth pony which looks normal, and can grow a horn or wings or turn into a slime pony version of myself or etc at the cost of needing to eat alot of eggs or something(readily digestable high protein quickly consumed). 

 

I figure being a shapeshifter would help explain my indecision and such, and also cuttlefish pseudo/minor-shapeshift. But I don't want to be a changeling they are too insectoid, like sometimes some art of Chrysalis (from underpable for instance) looks appealing in a lets-behave-viscerally kind of way but I dislike standard drones for sure, and most changeling depictions. Chitin isn't very sensitive either and I love brains, more information for the brain the better which means more sensitive skin, sorta like a cephalopod more than a bug tbh. 

 

And yeah, its a recolor, I mean obviously I could get hoards of flack entirely reasonably. I mean how could I function under a slice of life story anyways? 

 

But its the form that makes me happy and it'd work beyond just mlp stories also as I can shapeshift, so its convenient in that way also and I don't even need to drag those other aspects of me into it they could just go unmentioned tbh.

 

And my cutie mark is never an honest one but I can emulate cutie marks.

The colors are a bit much, I'll say that. 

 

As for what your OC is, I'd say it depends on whether you'd want it to fit into canon Equestria or not. If you're okay with stretching the boundaries, go for it. Otherwise, you'll probably want to think about if your OC's backstory is a bit "out there" for the show's setting, if you know what I mean.
 

I'm not too big with critiquing OCs so I don't really have much valuable input. Sorry.

to be honest, im not quite sure what i just read i kinda got lost in the waffeling but ill try my best, i think this could work if you just toned down the colouring, it kinda hurts my eyes if i look at to too long (not being mean) but i know they're meant to clash but they clash just a little to much for me

just keep it a little simpler, remember less is more (and the description too)

 

please keep in mind this is my opinion and doesn't mean im right 

 

i think the shape-shifting would work weather it was inter-dimensional or not, i mean look at discord. and if its a unicorn shape-shifting could just be his/her magical talent, or something along them lines 

 

but as for any more critique, i cant really say much as im a little confused as to what your saying through most of that (don't know if that's me being dyslexic or what) but  yeah just maybe tone it down a little but i wouldn't say it's a bad OC it just needs work

I'll try the best I can to say what I think, but it was a little hard to fully understand what you were trying to say.

 

I want to start with the visuals. First off, and of course, it's a recolor. You know as well as I that recolors are generally frowned upon. I'd like to suggest, even if you are the worst artist in the world, just draw your OC by hand. Once you've done that, I'd also like to suggest reaching out to someone and ask them politely to draw your OC in their style. This forum site seems to have a lot of people taking requests, so it shouldn't be any problem trying to find someone. Once you've got that, and the other person is willing to help out a little more, try altering the looks with the artist until it looks the way you want it to.

 

I'd also like to mention the colors. Generally, a pony's coat only has one color. The mane and tail can have a couple more colors, but they are all usually different colors than what the coat is. Make sure that the colors are pleasing to the eyes. I'd suggest finding a color wheel and looking at where colors are located on that in correspondence to the other colors. Finding patterns on that and using those colors can make fantastic looking OCs.

 

Now the problem with your story is that you want a shape shifter but you don't want a changeling OC, correct? An immediate solution that I thought of was a unicorn who likes to do magic shows, kind of like Trixie. They could put on magic shows and have them be focused on them changing shapes and species. If you want to stretch it a little further, you could even let your OC be a helper for story tellers and be a duo with another pony! I'd like to suggest you think about something along those lines.

 

Of course, it's just my critique, and everyone can be wrong. (Even me) May I ask if I missed anything though? Something else you'd like me to say? If not, I hope you take up my suggestions, and I'm excited to see what you do!

Your post made me happy, I don't know why.

 

From what i'm guessing, it seems you want more of a concept. Something to adhere your inspiration and ideas to.

 

Why not a draconequus?

 

That's what draconequui are. A sort of nebulous concept that's built upon itself with what it guessed would work at the time. They're supposed to be living messes, thought giving itself form. But that's what you have to do with power, is that you can't just rub it into peoples' faces to feel important. There isn't anything wrong with having an alicorn OC, the issue is when it starts feeling like your telling the audience that the character is important instead of the powers just being something intrinsic to their being that is just something they deal with. That's what I'm trying to do with my draconequus OC anyhow, he has reams of power but he doesn't use it to manipulate others, mostly because he's too much of a dolt to know what he's doing at any given time.

 

Do rather like the notion of an illusion-based magic unicorn. But you mentioned you didn't want to be restricted to form? Sort of hard to do that when your a biological creature, such as a horse. Now, if you want the basis to be that you're an inter-dimensional spectre of sorts, it is entirely possible to be haunting a form cobbled together of handy materials. Haven't seen much in the way of haunted Constructs ,but I think the notion has some room for creativity.

 

What I'd suggest, in order of what I think may apply would be: Draconequus, Alicorn, Construct

There's no such thing as a bad idea. You can never be too complicated. Unless your trying to explain things to others, of course. Different minds, different mediums!
