Tethers

Have you ever thought about what keeps you here?

I mean really…

Truly…

Thought about it?

I mean.

We’ve got two legs.

Why don’t we use them to just walk away

Even if it only happens a little more often.

You stay cause of family… friends,

Tools, toys, technology,

School, work, play

Love, life, loss

Sex

Fire

Pain

Elation

For moments you’ll never forget

And to make up for moments you don’t want to remember

We’re here because we’re afraid of death,

Afraid of the unknown,

afraid of not existing

But why does any of that matter?

Oblivion calls us to slumber

The open road calls for our demise

And a night of carnal pleasure calls us to forget

Why do we remember?

Why does it matter?

It’s all for the future

The what ifs

The when I get there’s

The experiences we’ll all get.

But why do we wish?

And how can wishing matter?

We can experience.

We can taste,

Feel,

Smell,

See,

Hear

And then we can invent, expand, postulate and remember

The infinite appetite of the mind Keeps us around

We interpret through the senses

But what would happen without them?

To me that’s terrifying

What would be left if it was all gone?

If the light couldn’t blind me

And the pleasures of color and size

Were lost to me forever?

If I’d never hold my ears in pain

And music couldn’t seep into my head

To enhance my soul and give it color?

If my tongue never felt dry in my mouth

And I would never again taste iron

When I nurse a cut until it scabs over?

When I’ll never turn my nose at a subway station

And the scent of perfume

Can no longer call memories?

Without pain how would I know when to stop?

And with numb skin how would the cold bite and the heat soothe?

Without any of that what’s left?

My mind.

An infinity of possibilities

And the depths of madness.

the horrors of the world

are like atoms in the cosmos

when they stand abreast the creations of the mind.

Without stimuli and interaction there are no boundaries

and there’s nothing to keep me here.

I’ve taken some time thinking about what keeps me here

Really…

Truly…

Taken some time.

And I’ve seen that it’s tethers

The senses that translate the world

Feed my brain

And trap it with only one foot

Crossing into the realm of the impossible.

We’re all here cause of tethers

Because we draw our boxes

Decide what can happen

And more importantly

What can’t

Without something to hold us down

We’d drift away

Like a balloon,

Released from the hand of a child.

The infinite expanse scares us

We could be gods…

But instead we choose limits

Instead we are human

And I for one am glad for tethers

I’m glad to be human

I’m glad to be here

I’m glad that it matters,

But sometimes I’ve got to think about what keeps me here

Really…

Truly… keeps me here

To fully appreciate it.Tethers

I thought of this a while ago, and it's kind of a poem, really more of a monologue. I just thought of how terrifying it would be to drift away emotionally, physically, and what it would mean to lose my senses. I don't consider poetry my forte, but I dabble a little. Comments are appreciated, and hopefully I'll be posting more here soon, most likely original stories.
