What are some good MLP books? (non-comic)

I've loaned some My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic books from my local library and a small portion were good :)

But the rest were pretty much just simplified stories of episodes we've already watched..

Loaning these MLP books has begun my love for the IDW MLP comics, and there are 2 other non-comic books that I liked:

- "The journal of the two sisters" was an awesome read :D It told about events that is not told in the show, and explains about

Celestia and Luna at around the time of their coronation (becoming princesses) and explains many things that are not told in

the show.. Plus i got to learn more about Star Swirl, learn more about Celie and Luna's behavior in the past, and some untold

events that is both fascinating and quite explanatory about certain things in Equestria ;) I plan to buy my own copy at some point..

- "The art of Equestria" was a book that I bought online a while ago, and it was very insightful about the artsy side of the show :D

It showed how the ponies are proportioned (sort of) and how their design was chosen, what the development ponies looked like..

some of them were pretty funny, and the names of some were hilarious  "Queen Majesty"? LOL xD

But then reading any of the other books i found, they were nowhere near the awesomeness and fascination that the other 2 books showed..

As they were just simplified stories of some MLP episodes.. with no additional information on anything.. which was disappointing..

But I'm sure there are some books that are still great, and up to the same level as the 2 books I mentioned :)

If there was one place that would be the best place to ask what good MLP books there are, it'd be here.. :P

So yeah, are there any more good MLP books that you know of?

Ones that have a great story, or give insight into certain aspects of the show?

I'd love to know what they're called so i can begin reading more ⁿ-ⁿ

there are not a huge amount or options for regular books that are not pre-school or really young kid reading level, and you exclude the comics so that pretty much leaves the my little pony chapter books by G.M Berrow, there are several that have been released like "My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell "

and there are a couple of equestria girls chapter books also but they are pretty much just rehashes of the movies

The Daring Do chapter books are my favorite of G.M. Berrow's MLP books.

Surely there must SOME good ones..

I've done some searching online for some that seem promising, such as:

- The Daring Do adventure collection

- The Elements of Harmony: the official guidebook

and

- Meet the ponies of Ponyville

...

But That's just speculation  I'm asking to see if anypony here knows of some goods ones that they've read and recommend ;)

EDIT: OOooooo... the Micro-series seems promising :) (Even though that is an IDW comic thing, I was curious to what good non-comic there were :P)

The microseries is comics, if you're talking about what I think you are.

I think Meet the Ponies of Ponyville is a picture book. The chapter books (especially the Daring Do ones) are probably your best bet. There's also Under the Sparkling Sea - which *is* a picture book, but it has hand-drawn art and a little worldbuilding.

I'd imagine a lot of them are picture books, being MLP and all xD

I do prefer books with a good story too..

But not one that's like.. A simplified repeat of an episode..

If there is one thing i want in an MLP book, it's information about

many of the things in Equestria including characters..

Information that is not really explained in the show.. Like the

fact that Unicorns can lose their magic forever if they exert

themselves in magical tasks.. or that Luna was the one who

decided on building all those trap doors and tricks in the castle

of the two sisters for fun, pranks and scares :P

Stuff like that ;)

Hmm, the chapter books and Under the Sparkling Sea might give you a little of that (but probably not Journal of the Two Sisters level). Some of the comics too, actually... I can think of one comic arc in particular, but I don't want to spoil anything!

If you're considering the IDW microcomics, though (along with the other IDW comics), little word of advice - Sometimes there are short little "side stories" (a couple pages long) at the end of an issue... but the collected volumes don't always include those, or if they do they put them all together at the back instead of in their "proper places".

The Rarity microcomic had one of those that I didn't even know existed (because I got the microcomics as collected volumes), but I really liked it once I found out about it. I'd *personally* suggest buying the individual issues (I get my comics digitally, though, so I don't know if buying all the physical ones individually would be inconvenient).

The exception is Vol. 1 of the main series - Issues #1-4. That's got an exclusive side story that I don't think the individual issues have. (Not to be confused with Omnibus Vol. 1, which has Issues 1-12 or something but doesn't have *any* of the side stories).

  • 2 weeks later...

I didn't liked Twi's chapter book, but Dashie's one was quite good. So far, these chapter books contains little worldbuilding compared to the Journal, just a little new thing here and there (like a different colored zebra in Dashie's). Pinks CB mentioned an additional older sister for Pinks that wasn't seen in Cutie Mark Chronicles, later revealed to be Maud Pie. If you want more worldbuild, I think the Daring Doo books are your best bet, since we know she and her stories are real XD

I wonder if its possible that some fanfiction writers with more lengthier stories have released their stories in book form. I've seen and nearly purchased a gigantic fanfiction story in book form, but that was not MLP related.

@Daring_Do Huh, i was under the impression that "chapter books" were like the summarized episodes in written form.. I probably developed this impression from being disappointed upon reading "The big book of Equestria"

As for the micro-series, i did plan to get the combined ones.. but I will review the cost and see which is best suited..

I do plan on collecting the IDW comics :P but it'd be good to have non-comic books as reference as they're different from the comics, In addition, a majority find the comics non-canon.. So if i were to make some sort of fan video later explaining theories or equine history or something it'd be better to reference things that would be considered canon

@Steve Paranha

A different colored Zebra? That seems very interesting :) As for the Daring Do ones, that's DEFINITELY on my books-to-get list :P

It isn't technically a pony book, and it is unofficial, but I've heard that the book My Little Brony: an Unofficial Novel About Finding the Magic of Friendship is a good book. I haven't read it yet, but DustyKatt from Stay Brony My Friends said that he liked it.

I highly recommend Princess Luna and the Festival of the Winter Moon as it's a really fun book, though I do recommend you watch all of season 5 before you read since it contains nods to those events.

Cool, I'll check that one out, and I've already seen season 5, Twice

Interesting.. I'll look into that one too ;) I'm aware there was a brony movie/documentary thing too.. I'll see both :P Edited by AURAequine

GET THIS NOW

Up til now, they sold the Daring Do books as part of this kind-of-expensive "adventure collection" (it comes in a chest, with an exclusive minifig and a cardboard "book" for storing stuff in), but now they're rereleasing them individually - Much more affordable. And today's the day of the first rerelease!
