My View on "Differently Abled" or something along the lines of that

This may not be that much related to MLP, but it does to the fandom a bit.

If this gets moved, oh well.

This also might be given the label "not able to create good conversations" but I'm putting it in a topic anyway.

This is ripped from my Tumblr:

You should probably go to this video to know where I got the idea for this from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOBoKxEcVAA It’s a scene from Rick and Morty about “retarded”. It’s kind of funny.

I saw a comment somewhere on aforesaid video-where-i-got-the-idea-from  that said this:

If you would have said the top comment to someone in 1850 they would have said, “What the hell is Autism?” Why? Autism was not a thing until 1999-2001.

Instead, they would have used “MR”, which means ‘Mentally Retarded”.

In the 80′s or something, people decided to replace the all-inclusive term “MR” with terms for each type of disorder. Thus, stuff like ADHD, Dyslexia, and, well, Autism was born. They also decided that “MR” was too offensive, which further quickened the process.

Now, I’m hearing sometimes that “disabled” may be too offensive, and we should use “differently abled”.

What?

It’s kind of like putting butter on a pancake. It may seem nicer, yes, but it is still a pancake. And also, it may be worse if you put it on (calories, fat).

Calling someone “differently abled” is true, yes, but it is no more true than “disabled”. They’re not “normal”, or at least everyone else’s definition of “normal”. “differently abled” just says it isn’t wrong, it’s different. And the it-may-be-worse part? Autism is in a spectrum, people. There are people paralyzed because of Autism. Making medicine to turn their level of Autism to my level would be a godsend. Making medicine to turn the commonly-shown-on-TV  level of Autism (I’ll call it TV Autism from now on) to mine would be a godsend. Labeling all Autistic people as “differently abled” would be the same as saying “We need to urge the government and private sector to listen to our concerns and take action to address this urgent global health crisis.” It’s assuming Autism is just one thing, and not a bunch of things combined into one label. Singular, not plural. A thing, not a group. This is dangerous.

This is why most Autistic people don’t really like Autism Speaks. Notice I said “most”. I didn’t think AS was bad for a while, then I learned they might not be that great. Some Autistic people vocally praise AS for their efforts. I’m not gonna go any more into AS for the time being, but if you want me to talk about it, let me know.

In an ideal world, Autism and retardedness would be two different things. Heck, “retardedness” wouldn’t exist. So wouldn’t Autism. But this is a crappy world, and people call black people n*****s all the time. And Autism and retardedness may be closer related than everyone might think.

The subject of this topic has little potential to spark discussion between many members and, as such, would be better suited to a status update or a blog. When creating a thread, please remember that the goal is to start a conversation with room for many people to chime in and give their own viewpoints on, and that sharing events of an anecdotal nature would be better done elsewhere.
