I think this is probably reading more in than is really there, and wishful thinking.  I really doubt that this angle is what Hasbro is actually intending or implying.  That said, I would jump for joy if this ship was true.

I would absolutely LOVE it if they became an official couple, but even as background ponies, there are some people who will see that hint of lgbt and completely freak out. So they might consider it too risky a move (since they still wanna make money with merch and stuff, and while I can't see bronies having a big problem with it, I unfortunately wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of parents got mad about it. Which would be bad, since kids were the original target audience).

Being background ponies only the astute brony analyst would see the signs so it'll probably pass all the concerned parents eyes on the matter or it just won't gain much ground. I don't like encouragement towards brony fanonism though but that has already been somewhat broken by Slice of Life and the show has almost no value to me anymore. I'm rewatching some Simpsons episodes and have to say MLP just doesn't compare to it.
