Can you make a living off MLP?

I'd have to say no.

I make a living off being an artist, and only about 10% of my commissions are pony related. If even.

MLP is likely a phase type thing, it's popular for a number of years before fizzling out. A good amount of money can likely be made at the peak of its popularity. Same goes for anything popular. The best money is likely to be make in youtube videos, such as fan songs and animations but ONLY if they go 'viral' and that is very much up to chance and luck.

However, I will say that artists and the likes who start out in this fandom could move on to other things using the skills they learned while making pony work.

But making a living exclusively off ponies? Nope. Unless you score some mega famous stuff that makes you enough money to support you and your potential family for the rest of your life without you ever having to work again. But that'd be somewhere in the million(s) range.

While you can't make a living directly off of MLP, you can probably find a way to incorporate ponies into your job, especially if you're an artist. Some custom plushie makers will make ponies, for example. Maybe an artist will do a pony themed commission, or someone will make a pony fursuit. It's not directly MLP, but it's as close as one can get.

Lots of people sell had made items. YouTubers also can make money.

From a technical legal standpoint, unless you have permission from Hasbro, it would be illegal to make money from MLP.

That doesn't stop people, and Hasbro doesn't seem to care about fan made stuff for sale (most of the time. I've heard of a few cases where someone got in trouble for MLP related art).

It's very hard to make a living doing creative work in general. I do pony commissions in my free time and to date I've only maybe made about $300 total (and I've been doing it for 3 years). There just aren't a lot of people who want to pay a lot for commissioned work.
