gaming Minecraft in virtual reality

Just recently, Minecraft for the Gear VR was released. Have anyone here tired it yet? What did you think about it?

I just spent about two hours playing it, and I think it's awesome! When I was caving, I really felt on edge all the time. It's the most intense experience in virtual reality I have ever had thus far. Although I do miss an option to sprint, and several times while caving I wanted to press F3 to see how far down I was. I guess we can't have everything.

Still, it's an amazing experience and could definitely be one of those "killer apps" that will get VR truly off the ground.

So I would like to hear your thoughts. Have you brought this app, and what did you think about it? Do you WANT to play it? Have you tried this in multiplayer?

I personally don't think this would be worth the investment at all. A $600 VR headset, a computer strong enough to handle it AND the game? Meh.

The Gear VR he said. It's $99.

I have one in my store with Minecraft, it's insane.

$99? Wow, that kinda makes the others seem....immensely overpriced.

Yeah but the catch is it's powered by a phone, so like it's limited to what a phone can do. AKA: it's an entry level device.

Oh, it is the phone version. Right. The PC version of all of this is what I think would not be worth it at all.

So, it's $99 more than the Google Cardboard for the same functionality?

Amoral cynic with a bitchin' vocabulary.

Check out A Century of Song if you like music from before this millennium.

The Gear VR is a lot better. I would even say that it is better than the Oculus Rift DK1 (not the consumer version, however). It does however need a Samsung phone to work.

I agree. The PC VR headsets are currently a bit expensive. I will personally wait a generation or two before I buy one. The Gear VR however is definitely worth the money. And despite being an entry level device it is very well polished. Definitely good enough for Minecraft. Although it did crash once for me while playing...

It has more functionality than the Google Cardboard, and exclusive apps.

I'm a bit late on this topic, but I must say the killer feature with the Oculus and the Vive is the head tracking. That pretty much puts you inside the game more than anything else. You could be missing an eyeball and still get most of the experience because of that alone.

You're not going to get that with Google Cardboard. At best, your smart phone will be able to read the tilt of your head, but it'll probably drift over a short period (at least mine did).

For an example of how awesome and important head tracking is, here's something someone did with a wii sensor 8 years ago:

As for the topic: I've tried Minecraft in VR (on the Oculus, not GearVR). I played both the Microsoft Windows 10 version and the Minecrift mod for the Java version. Turning around makes me feel uncomfortable in Minecrift (Comfort mode doesn't work for me), and in the W10 version, Comfort mode is way too freaking slow because the increments are way too small.

Well I do have a friend who plays Minecraft with the Gear VR and tells me how she thinks about it, she says it's pretty amazing. Although the Gear VR has already impressed me enough, what I really want to see is gameplay using the Microsoft HoloLens since it looks pretty phenomenal.

Just look at it, the world is right in front of you and you can modify whatever you want!

But I'd rather stick to good 'ol Minecraft PE since it's already fun as it is whenever I play a online game with my friends.

Oh my GOD I want to try playing Minecraft like that so much, I love the game, always wanted to experience it with my very own eyes in a virtual reality, I'll so give it a shot when I can.
