That doesn't he's not friends with them, he just can't be friends in the same way or on the same level. But their friendship is pretty much like her friendship with Big Mac: friend of a friend. Every thing else though I agree with. Just like they finally paired Rarity and Pinkie together (a lot) this season, they should pair Spike and Rainbow together for an episode. The OP is correct in that those two don't seem to ever hang out, even though I'm sure they consider each other a friend. Are you a Spike fan? The CMC are different ages, that doesn't stop them from being the mane 6's friends. Cranky Doodle is a boy and a different species, and older thn Pinkie, that doesn't stop them from being friends. To even imply that gender, race, and age will differentiate a friendship you have compafed to your other friends, and to give priority to one over the other based off those things (especially for maical ponies) is dumb. The CMC aren't actually friends with the mane six in the same way as they are with each other, so you have actually provided another good example. Think about it this way. If you are in your twenties you may well get on very well with someone in their fifties, or with a ten year old, but it's unlikely they would hang out in your friendship circle or go on a night out with you for instance. Why wasn't HE one of the friends that RD tried to impersonate, in Dashie's newest episode? (She impersonated every friend but Spike) Because its spike Come on, he's annoying basically. Maybe he just also has other friends and wants to be with them too. Plenty of people have more than one group of friends they hang with. He can sometimes be more of a side character than a main character so we don't see everything about his life. Or maybe Twilight sees him as more of a close family member rather than a best friend and the other mane 6 just aren't AS close to him as they are to Twilight. Every major character added to the story just makes it further complicated because that's one more you have to juggle with in the narrative and one more to divide up screentime with. The Mane 6 are his friends but at the same time they are adults with their own jobs and responsibilities well Spike is often described as a "Baby Dragon". Their relationship will never be on equal terms because of the age gap. Spike is pretty much Twilight's kid and the others are basically his Aunts. I like going with the idea that Twilight views Spike as her little brother but at the same time their relationship extends to what happens when a parent dies and the older sibling is left to raise their younger sibling (I believe one of the staff members on the show confirmed this). Spike's relationship with Twilight is like Apple Jack's relationship with Apple Bloom so the Mane 6 view Spike on the same level as the CMC. Spike is a child of the opposite gender.It's not difficult to see why he has a different dynamic with them. Every character present somewhere has to be animated, and while they can cheat around with background ponies doing stock animations, Spike -being a dragon and a main character- requires different animations and can't just be dumped in the background that easily. If he's present, he's expected to do something, which means more time is spend on animating an episode because Spike is there. So they just leave him out to save time.
